Many Hands Make Light Work

The kids are home!

Oh joy.

I don’t think they are very happy, but I am.  Beneath the frustrations that accompany the rearing of children lies a heart full of love for my babies.

I allowed Rooster to sleep until nearly 10:30 before waking him.  It was time to do some yard work!

Welcome Home!

LOL

I thought it would be a good idea if we gave some love to my much-neglected back yard.

The “before” photos…

Armed with my handy-dandy clippers, I made fast work of the trees.  Chicky dragged the limbs to the curb.  She had to make two piles.  The yard waste people are so totally gonna be done with me, eh?

Meanwhile. Rooster edged around the patio and scooped poop.

Guy Friend had come over, so he pitched in by raking the leaves and gathering them on an old sheet so he could carry them to the curb (smart one, that kid, eh?).

The heat and humidity made our chores miserable, and it seemed like we’d been out there forever!  However, when I checked the clock, we had only worked one hour.

I couldn’t believe it!  All of those hours I spent last week could have been shortened if only I had waited for the kids!

Oh well.

Here are the “after” pictures…

One of these days we’ll get grass.  Until then, this will have to do.

Saturday Going-Ons

Well, I’m not going to post my “done” list for Saturday because, quite honestly, it was pathetic.

Simply stated…I ran out of steam.  I worked so hard this week that I just couldn’t fathom the thought of working up a sweat again.

Instead, the Mr. and I had a leisurely day.

He asked me what I wanted to do, and I said that I thought a visit to the bookstore would be nice.

Now, the Mr. knows that I don’t go to the bookstore just to browse.  I love books.  I love reading, having recently gotten back into it after the hiatus that ensued because of my burnout from college reading.

So he asked me why, exactly, I wanted to go (i.e. what did I want to buy)?

That’s when I told him it was World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIP), and that the local Ravelry group was meeting there.

Aha!  He knew it.  His investigative nose was still in working order.

Now, let me first explain a couple of things.

First, the Mr. has been leery…errrr overly cautious…ever since I became internet-savy…way back when the kids were tots, and I met IRL with some gals who chatted online.  We were all moms with young children, and we began meeting weekly for play dates.  The internet was our life line in between those get-togethers.

I can’t blame the Mr. for worrying.  You’ve heard the stories about women getting abducted and worst by meeting computer friends in the real world.

I’ve tried to respect his wishes and am cautious.

Second…I tend to be very shy when meeting new people.  I mean, I’m so shy that most of the time I will avoid situations that put me in the company of large, unfamiliar groups.  Hence, I don’t do work parties, etc.

So, with the above explanations, you can probably now better understand why I was hesitant to go to the bookstore.

When we entered, the place was a madhouse.  Saturday had been chosen as one of the greyhound adoption days, so there was a collection of dogs and their foster parents just inside the doors.

The cafe is located at the front of the store, just to the right of where the dogs were set up.  It was there that I spied my group of crafters.

I gave them a cursory glance and walked on by.  I browsed the knitting books and went in the back to look at the knitting magazines.

Yeah, I know.  I was killing time…trying to decide if I was going to stop by the group of ladies and say hello.

The Mr. settled himself in a comfortable spot and proceeded to thumb through a computer magazine.  He was giving me my space…not rushing me in my self-imposed challenge.

I casually headed back to the front of the store and stopped just behind the last row of books.

Sucking in my breath, I eased my head around the corner and snuck in another peek at the group…trying not to be obvious about it.

What a chicken, eh?  These are people, for heaven’s sake.  And they were sporting my favorite tools…fiber stuff!

So, I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders, and headed over to their table.

“Are you the group from Ravelry?” I asked.

One of the gals looked up and asked, “Did you make your bag?”

My bag?  Oh, my booga bag!

I told them I did, and that was all it took.  I told them that I was AuburnChick, and they said, “Ohhhhh, you’re AuburnChickkkkkkk!!!”

Yeah, I could tell…I was gonna like this group.

I was immediately invited to sit down, so I did.  I admired what they were working on, and when asked what I was currently working on, I pulled out my Leyburn Sock, which I had stuck in my purse just in case I got up the nerve to step outside my comfort zone.

They ooohhhhed and aaaahhhheeed as only fiber people can.

We talked for about 30 minutes when I spied the Mr.  He was strolling through the place, allowing me to do my thing.  But, I could tell he was ready to go.

It was a nice introduction to the group and reminded me that I need to be around people who share my love of yarn.  In fact, I need to be around people to help me loosen up and relax.  Plus, there’s no telling how God might use me.

We said our goodbyes, and I pretty much floated on air the rest of the day.  The Mr. was proud of me.  He knows how hard these things can be for me.

With such a great start to the day, I didn’t think it could get any better…until dinner.

The kids aren’t coming home until the next day, so we took advantage of our last quiet evening without them.

The Mr. looked at menus online while I took a nap, and he was ready when I awoke.  He wanted seafood…something the kids turn their noses up when they are here.  Living on the coast of Florida gives one the opportunity to eat fresh fish.

We finally agreed on a restaurant and headed out.  Here’s what what we saw when we arrived…

This restaurant was recently rebuilt.  You have to walk down a long pier to get to it.

I didn’t get a picture of the inside (not wanting to look like a tourist), but you can imagine the view with all of those tall windows facing the water.  It’s truly heavenly.

We splurged on an appetizer…Oysters Rockefeller…

Oh my gosh…they were the biggest oysters we’ve ever seen!  The Mr. and I decided that next time, we’re going to order two plates of them and call it a meal.

Meanwhile, we still had our entrees to contend with…

Shrimp and Grits for me…

The Mr. ate grouper…

I wound up taking half of mine home…what a delicious doggie bag!

And the view as we left the restaurant?

I’ve lived in Florida for 20 years, and it just never gets old!

Friday’s “Done” List

A disclaimer about my small list…I was tired and a bit down in the dumps.  So, I didn’t aspire to get much accomplished.  I did get a second wind late afternoon, though…

Friday’s List

  • Fed dogs twice
  • Cleaned and refilled inside water bowl
  • Swept inside the house and the porch
  • Revamped my resume and job hunted online
  • Visited local Workforce Center for job referrals
  • Listened to Revive Our Hearts
  • Dusted lamp shades (see photo below)
  • Fixed Chicky’s dehumidifier – who knew that you had to clean the dust from where the air gets sucked in?!  It’s working properly now!
  • Vacuumed Chicky’s room
  • Scooped dog poop
  • Removed dry clothes from the line
  • Took out the trash
  • Watered plants inside and out
  • Made two bowls of chicken salad using two rotisserie chickens from Publix
  • Finished watching Heroes season online
  • Knit on my Leyburn Socks (I’m up to the leg now…almost done with Sock #1)
  • Read a few chapters of my book, Blowback

Now, a few photos.

You’ll probably remember the pictures I posted of the pile of tree branches beside the curb.  One of my online friends questioned whether the pile would get picked up.

Check out this wayyyy cool truck…

When he was done…

You know what this means?

Now I can start trimming the trees in the back yard!  Woo Hoo!

Oh, and I thought I would share a picture of my lamp shade…

That’s about six months worth of dust.  What a difference the extra effort makes!

A New Tool for AuburnChick

Feast your eyes on this picture:

A couple of days ago, I purchased a new set of clippers (1 5/8″) and a set of garden gloves.

Rooster periodically uses my gloves when he mows the grass, but he ALWAYS loses them!  As you know, I’ve worked in the yard every day since the kids left for camp, but I’ve only been able to find one of my gloves.  So, being the improviser that I am, I made do by donning one of my old, fingerless work out gloves.  It looks strange, but it’s worked.  Hence, I was due for a new pair, which I plan to hide from the boy.

I was most excited about the clippers.  For years, I have only owned a pair of small clippers suitable for tiny shrubs.  I’ve made do, though.  However, we have some serious tree branch issues, so I easily justified the purchase of a larger pair.

On Thursday, I went to work.

The first cut I made with the clippers was, shall we say, AMAZING!  Did you ever watch Tim Allen in Home Improvement?  Do you remember his caveman Ar, Ar, Ar whenever he bought a new power tool?

That’s exactly how I felt.

Ar, Ar, Ar

Cut, cut, cut

“Clippers,” I wanted to say, “Where have you been all of my life?”

Ok.  I’m weird.  I’m addicted to gadgets, and I’m not embarrassed to admit it.

After two hours, I had accumulated the following pile of debris…

I ran out of room on my half of the pile (the right side), so I started stacking branches on my neighbor’s pile.  You can see where her pile ends…the brown stuff…and mine begins…the green leaves.

Although I still had two trees to trim, I had to stop because I simply ran out of room for my debris.

I decided to clean up the flower bed I had not gotten to the day before.  It still had piles of dead leaves and pine needles from the winter.

And the fruits of my labor?  Check them out for yourself…

We want to evetually remove this tree...its placement (not our decision) was a huge mistake because it blocks our front window.

Thinned out shrubs make for a much cleaner look.

Can you see my sunflowers in the long pot on the window sill?

Can you see my sunflowers in the long pot on the window sill?

I don’t know if you noticed, but there’s an empty area in the right corner.  There used to be a tree (term used loosely)…

The Mr. and I never liked it.  It’s really quite ugly and prone to vegetation sicknesses.  So, I finally got out the shovel and dug that baby out…without the Mr.’s assistance.  The last time he tried to remove a tree, he pulled something in his back.  I’m sure you remember my post about that incident.

It felt soooo good to get the tree out of there, although it left a huge hole…

As you can see in the picture below, the roots are quite large for a “tree” of that size!  I dread getting out the other tree!

The back yard is screaming for attention now.  We’ll see…we’ll see…

Thursday’s “Done” List

This is making for some exciting reading, eh?

Thursday’s List

  • 45-minute power-walk with Pele
  • Spent two hours trimming trees with new clippers and cleaning out second flower bed…the yard waste people are gonna hate me
  • Went to Target (my favorite place, in case you haven’t noticed) for ankle high socks, new sheets for Rooster’s bed, a bathmat for the kids’ bathroom.  Found kitchen towels on clearance, so I picked up a set of two.  Also bought Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares (with caramel filling).
  • Put away clean dishes that I washed the day before
  • Washed and hung a load of laundry
  • Listened to Revive Our Hearts – Nancy finished her series on Joshua – I HIGHLY recommend it!!
  • Folded and put away clean clothes from two days ago
  • Put new sheets on Rooster’s bed – hope he likes them!  They are dark blue.
  • Cooked Easy Beef Burgundy for the Crock Pot
  • Wound up making chicken salad because we didn’t have egg noodles or white rice to serve with the beef burgundy
  • Scooped poop – two times
  • Fed dogs twice
  • Texted the kids in the hope that I would hear a word back.  Rooster finally responded.  Chicky’s been doing it on her own all week.  Brownie points for her.
  • Tried to pay a bill only to discover that my unemployment checks haven’t been coming.  So, I tried to call unemployment.  Endless busy signal.
  • Studied for English 6-12 exam – I will be taking the test on June 30th
  • Watched So You Think You Can Dance – just love the creativity and talent of those kids!
  • Watched two more episodes of Heroes
  • Read a few chapters of Blowback
  • Read and meditated on Joshua 24

It was a physically and mentally exhausting day.

A Dirty Job

Yard work is a dirty job…plain and simple.

Observe:

I only wish those were tan lines, but alas, they point to the areas of my body that were covered during the three hours I spent out in the yard on Wednesday.

Actually, truth be told, there was also dirt from the evening before (Tuesday)…when I spent three hours mowing, edging, and weed eating.  I knew I was going to power-walk the next morning, and I knew I’d also be working outside again.  I figured why bother getting cleaned up?  I was only going to get dirty again.

Nasty, I know, but when you’re spending so much time in the sun, you tend to fry a few brain cells.

Now, I don’t know why, but the sight of a neighbor’s pile of yard debris brings out my competitive side.

Must

Make

Bigger

Pile

By the time I finished trimming shrubs and cleaning out a flower bed, I had achieved my goal (my pile is on the left)…

Boy, did my body pay the price for the work I did.  I was sore and tired…probably due to the heat and the physical exersion.

Thank goodness for cool showers.

Once the dirt was off, I could see that the time I’m spending in the sun is leaving me with a nice little tan…

Just wait until tomorrow’s post…when I upload a picture of the yard pile after today’s work.

Wednesday’s “Done” List

Oh boy…Wednesday, I hit the ground running…errr power-walking.  I didn’t stop until late, late afternoon:

Wednesday’s List

  • Fed the dogs
  • Cleaned and refilled the dogs’ inside water bowl
  • Took Molly on a 50-minute power-walk (the new shoes were FANTASTIC!)
  • Worked in the yard for three hours trimming the shrubs and cleaning out old leaves and pine needles from one of the front flower beds
  • Showered (whew!)
  • Ran to Target for no-show socks (for new sneakers), a new tree branch clipper, and garden gloves – “someone” lost one of my other gloves, so I had resorted to using an old weightlifting glove
  • Made chicken and yellow rice for dinner
  • Removed dry clothes from the line
  • Dumped old food from the refrigerator
  • Washed dishes
  • Watered plants
  • Listened to Revive Our Hearts
  • Watched So You Think You Can Dance
  • Watched two episodes of Heroes
  • Read and meditated on Psalm 16
  • Read some of my book

Have you noticed that knitting has not been on the list the last two days?  Well, that’s because my body has been too tired!  My hands are sore, and the only thing I’ve felt like doing is vegging.

Tomorrow, you’ll get to see what I was up to today (did that make sense??).

Tuesday’s “Done” List

Continuing the theme from yesterday…

Tuesday’s List

  • Listened to Knitting Rose (I’m now caught up on her podcasts)
  • Studied for English certification exam
  • Meditated on 1 Corinthians 1:18
  • Read some of my book before turning out the light

In the process of dusting, I discovered that we have a lot of movies…

I’m anal.  I took every movie off and dusted the shelves completely.  I even dusted the movies themselves before putting them back on the stands.  Now, they are organized alphabetically.  Movie and TV series are grouped separately.  There shouldn’t be any complaining when we can’t find what we want.  Chances are that the kids have them hidden away in their closets…

So, although the day started off slowly, I still managed to get quite a few tasks completed.

Mama, What Did You Do This Week?

I fully expect to hear the above question when the kids get home on Sunday.

Invariably, I hem and haw as I can’t for the life of me remember everything.  I seem to think that I must have a mile-long list to justify my time at home.  I know, in reality, this isn’t true, but that’s the way the kids make me feel.

So, I’m going to be typing up a list each day…a list to refer back to when they do ask the question.

Monday’s List

  • Went back to bed after dropping off the kids at church
  • Washed one load of towels and one load of regular clothes
  • Hung both loads of clothes on the line after taking previously dried clothes off the lines
  • Swept inside
  • Cleaned the dogs’ inside water bowl and refilled
  • Put away clean dishes that Rooster washed the day before
  • Weeded front yard and flower beds
  • Dusted and cleaned the master bedroom
  • Vacuumed master bedroom
  • Properly swept kids’ bathroom (actually went around the toilet too!)
  • Took out trash from bathrooms, kitchen, and bedroom
  • Cooked chicken breasts and stuck in the fridge.  The Mr. ate dinner out, so I didn’t finish cooking dinner.
  • Fed the dogs twice
  • Listened to Revive Our Hearts program
  • Listened to two of Knitting Rose’s podcasts while cleaning
  • Added Grandmama as a friend on Facebook
  • Loved on the dogs periodically throughout the day
  • Turned the heel on my sock
  • Watched Lost finale
  • Read a few chapters of the book Blowback, by Brad Thor

Nope…I didn’t do much today.  Maybe Tuesday will be better.

Shopping Can Feel Like Torture

Ugh.

I am soooooo not a shopper, as evidenced by my trip to the store today.

My mission was to purchase a new pair of running (insert cough) shoes.  We should probably rename them power walking shoes as that is what I’ll most likely be doing.

My old pair…

Brooks Running Shoes

Brooks Running Shoes

…is at least eight years old.  I purchased these shoes during Rooster’s first year on a travel soccer team.  I think he was seven years old.  One of the parents of his teammate’s owned a shoe store, and I was invited in for a good fitting.

Back then, I worked out four to five days a week, and it was my practice to walk/run on the path that encircled the soccer facility.  I needed a good pair of shoes.

It was my first (and only) professional shoe fitting, during which I learned that my feet are quite odd.  My right foot measures at 7.5″, while the left is 8″.  This requires me to buy size 8.5 shoes to accommodate the left foot.  In addition, my feet are a little wider (hence, Nike shoes, which are narrow, won’t fit properly), and my heels are narrow.  I also need good arch support.

Lovely.

I walked out of there after spending $80+ dollars…a figure I sucked in my breath at.  We were poor (things haven’t changed much), and it was an unexpected expense.  However, the shoes held up well, so I got my money’s worth.

This morning, after getting the green light from the Mr., I headed out to Sports Authority armed with a $10 coupon I found here.

Oh boy.  It wasn’t long before I wondered what I had set myself up for.

The young salesman was exceptionally patient as I explained my foot oddities.  I told him that I had previously owned a pair of Brooks, and he quickly pointed to the only pair the store sells:

They were lovely but, unfortunately, were not available in the size I needed.  I did, however, try on the 8’s and loved them.

Next, I tried on a brand I’ve never worn before:  Under Armour.  I wasn’t satisfied with trying on one pair.  I tried on three different colors (pink is not pictured below):

This is where things started getting hairy.

I liked the way the black pair fit, but I didn’t like the color.  So, I tried on the blue…exact same style.  But for some reason, they did not feel good on my feet.  The pink were a slightly different style and did not fit well on my feet at all.  I quickly discarded them.

This left me with three viable pairs to choose from.

Ugh.

Back and forth I walked, changing pairs.  I tried walking with one of each style on each of my feet.

Ugh.

The thing that really bothers me about buying running shoes is that you never know how they are going to feel until you get outside and run.  And by that time, you’re stuck with the pair.

I couldn’t decide if I wanted to let the store drop ship a pair of the Brooks in the size I needed.  I already know I like that brand, and that it feels good on my feet.

Only AuburnChick can make things so complicated, right?

Ultimately, I came home with this pair:

I sacrificed the way they look on…not so feminine…and went for the way they feel.

Next time I go shopping, it’s gonna be for yarn!!  It’s a different kind of torture, but much more pleasureable.
