It’s How You Play the Game

This past weekend, I had to drive across the state so Chicky could have a pre-tournament soccer practice with her travel team.

Fortunately, we got home in plenty of time for me to settle in front of the TV to watch the Survivor finale.

The three finalists were (left to right) Mick, Natalie, and Russell.

Mick is a doctor.  Natalie had given up a lucrative job to be on the show, and Russell is a self-made millionaire in the oil business.

Everyone, including myself, expected Russell to win.  He had been a fierce competitor.

I’ve gotta tell you that although I expected his name to be read out, I was hoping it wouldn’t.

Russell was mean.  He lied, called people names, and stirred up trouble.  He showed he cared only for himself…especially when he emptied the water from other players’ canteens and burned socks.

Now, maybe I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but it is my opinion that people who go through life (or a game) this way do not deserve to win.  Heck, there’s already a disparity in this world as it is.

I waited on the edge of my sofa…eager for the results.

Each vote was read…

One vote for Natalie; one vote for Russell; one for Natalie, and one for Russell.  And Jeff kept reading the votes until declaring the winner…

Natalie!!!

Yeah!!

But, the story doesn’t end here.

After announcing the winner, CBS had a Reunion Show.

Boy, oh boy, you should have seen Russell’s face.  He was in shock, and he sat with tears in his eyes.

His mood looks somber even after the live show at the cast party.

Really?  You’re gonna cry about this?  I couldn’t help but think that he’s already a millionaire.  Why cry?

My question was answered a few minutes later when he offered Natalie $10,000 if she would allow Jeff (the host) to declare him “Sole Survivor.”

Really?

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Was it really that important that Russell be given this title?  Did his ego need it this badly that he was willing to pay out of his own pocket for it?

I was appalled.

Russell is obviously a very intelligent man.  Anyone who can start his own business and make a profit these days is one sharp cookie.

He’s also been blessed with a lovely wife and two young daughters.

So, the question begs to be asked – why would he need validation of this sort?

In the end, I’ll never know.  All I can say is that I feel sorry for him.

It is obvious that something much deeper is missing from his life.

I think he’s lost.

He needs to seek out another title for himself…

Follower of Christ

Oh, being a child of God doesn’t mean that we don’t desire earthly things.  However, God calls us to live lives focused on Him.  We are instructed not to seek earthly titles.  Besides that, if we are walking close to God, we recognize that we don’t need anything except God’s grace.

That is worth far more than any money payout on any “reality” show.

Oh, and as far as Natalie?

She came across as a genteel, Southern belle.  She thrived in the wilderness (more power to her), learned to do for herself, and didn’t seem like a hateful, stab-you-in-the-back kind of person.  I’d like to think that I would play a similar kind of game.

So Natalie, YOU GO GIRL!!

The Cutest Thing Ever!

Chicky and Guy Friend ran to Target today.  When they got home, they told me that Guy Friend had a surprise for me.

I opened my hands, closed my eyes, and waited (a bit nervously).  Look at what he got me…

You guys…it’s LIP BALM!!!

Now, there’s a story behind this.

You see…I have to shamefully admit that I love Mt. Dew.

Yes, yes, I’m fully aware of the ginormous amount of caffeine that exists in this soda.  However, I don’t get hyper from caffeine, so that’s not why I drink it.

You see, I just love the taste of it.

Almost as much as chocolate.

Well, because the caffeine does bad things to my body, I try to stay away from it, and I did for quite a while.

Recently, I fell off the Mt. Dew wagon.

My family doesn’t want me drinking them, so I do what people naturally do when they want something but don’t want the guilt trip.

I hide them.

I thought I was doing a good job of hiding my renewed addiction until last night, when I wasn’t as sly as I normally am.

Rooster found my hiding spot and loudly called me out on it.

Oh boy.

Not fun.

Guy Friend was here to witness this.

Enter today and the shopping trip to Target.

Guy Friend and Chicky saw the lip balm in the dollar section, and he HAD to get it for me.

Folks, it’s regular chap stick and the cutest thing ever…

The top comes off, and you turn the bottom of the can to advance the balm.

And the flavor?

DELICIOUS!!!

Chicky and Guy Friend got a good laugh when they saw my face.

I told Chicky that Santa can fill my stocking with more of these tiny tubes of yum!

A Gift From Francis

First off, I am so sorry I’ve been neglecting the blog the last few weeks.  High school soccer season has been in full swing with the girls playing up to three games a week.  With my long-term subbing job, I haven’t had a whole lot of spare time…

Last night's game...lovely weather conditions, eh?

Thank goodness for shoe dryers (we have two)!

Anyhoo…back to the real topic of this post…gifts!

You’ll recall that a couple of days ago, I blogged about the Shetland Shorty I made for one of my students.

I took the gift to school, eager to see her reaction.  I went to the library, where we had originally planned to meet up, but she wasn’t there!  Oy!  I waited a few minutes before heading to my class.  I thought she had forgotten.

She hadn’t.  She was running late.

About ten minutes into my first class, who showed up at the door?

Francis!!

I had her have a seat while I got my students started on their work.

And then the gifting began.

As she pulled out the gifts I had wrapped in tissue paper, I grew nervous.

She saw the Bible first, and she read the note I had written inside.

I got a hug.

Then she unwrapped the shrug.

Her mouth opened in a surprised “O.”

She recounted the time she had seen me wear mine…the exact memory I had of that encounter.

She seemed touched that I had gone through the trouble to make one for her.  It was no trouble at all, I assured her.

Then it was my turn to open my present.

It was small, wrapped in ribbon, and taped heavily.

Once I broke through, I discovered this…

BLING!!!

You guys know, from reading about my travels, that I do like beaded bling!!  Woo Hoo!  And bling in which all of the pieces have been hand-picked and put together by an 18 year old…oh, but my heart sang!

We both hugged, and she told me she loved me.  Gosh, but my heart just swelled with joy.  I love this girl as well.

I am still so surprised every time I make such connections with kids.  This is my favorite thing about teaching…being touched by other lives and discovering that I’ve touched theirs’ as well.

A Gift for Francis

Every once in awhile someone touches your life in a really special way.

So special, in fact, that you decide to do a little something to let them know how you feel.

Last winter, I spent a couple of weeks subbing for one English teacher.  I was still a little new at subbing, so I was very nervous.

My first period class had quite a number of characters.  However, it didn’t take long for one student to stand out among the others.  She taught me the “ropes” of how her regular teacher ran the class.  What a huge help!

This student was bright and had the personality to match.

We instantly bonded.

In the months since that first meeting, “Francis” and I have run into each other many times.  She’s always excited when she sees me.  Can I tell you just how good this makes me feel?

Last spring, she ooohhhed and ahhhhhed over the Shetland Shorty I had just finished and was happily wearing that day.  She excitedly asked me to make her one.  I readily said yes and told her that I would have her pick out the yarn.

Well, I never quite forgot my promise, but I’ll admit that I kind of hoped that she would.

Ugh…so bad, eh?

I don’t know why, but the thought of double yarn overs and k2tog’s just didn’t thrill me.

A few weeks ago, Francis and I ran into each other in the library.  The conversation went like this…

“Hi Mrs. AuburnChick!  Guess what I did yesterday?”

“Hi Francis.  I’m scared to ask, but what did you do?”

“I bought your Christmas present!” she proudly declared.

Oh boy.

“You did not,” I said.

“Yep!  I can’t wait to give it to you!” she said, and smiled broadly.

Oh boy, I thought to myself.

We finished our conversation, and off I went.

Enter in the cruise.

Do you remember the pictures of my knitting in front of the pool and ocean?  That was the Shetland Shorty I cast on…Francis’ gift from me.

Last night, I stayed up until 1:30am, working feverishly to finish it.  This is our last week of school before Christmas vacation, and I knew I wanted to gift it before we left.

Here’s how it turned out (that’s me modeling)…

I used 180g (1.8 skeins) of Southwest Trading Company’s Bamboo (colorway is black)…

I saw Francis today, and we chatted…

“Are you going to be in the library before school tomorrow?” I asked.

“Yes, why?” she asked, and then understanding crossed her face.

“Oh….” she said.  “Do you like blue and purple,” she asked, “Cause I saw you wearing a blue jacket one day,” she continued.

“Blue is one of my favorite colors,” I assured her.

“Good, cause I made you something,” she said.

Do you know that my eyes misted over at that last comment.  I told her that her making me something would make the gift even more special.

When I came home after school, I eagerly wrapped the shrug.  Because of some other things we talked about, I felt prompted to include another item…

This is a Bible I’ve had for a few years.  It has commentaries written by Max Lucado.

Francis is a smart girl, and she loves to read.  I’m hoping she’ll enjoy Max’s style of writing as much as I do.

I’m also hoping that she will read this Bible.  She does not come from a Christian upbringing…the total opposite, in fact.  However, she’s at a point in her life where she has a Christian woman (someone besides me) mentoring her on a daily basis.

One thing that struck me from our conversation was how she assured me that this woman, “…is a real Christian.  She doesn’t just say what she believes.  She lives it,” Francis told me.

Wow.

Powerful.

I’m praying that the words from this Bible literally jump out and grab hold of her heart.  Actually, she’s going to have to be the one who takes hold of God’s Word, but still…you know what I’m saying.

To say I’m excited about this gift-giving exchange tomorrow is one HUGE understatement…

I’m really going to miss Francis next year (she’ll be graduating in June).  But I know that God is working in her life.  I’m so thankful for His prompt, which led me to put together this gift for a very special girl.

It’s Official

Chicky got some mail yesterday…

Very important mail…

A package…

Inside was…

HER ACCEPTANCE LETTER TO ROLLINS!!!!

Ta Da!!

In the spring, I had shared pictures of our visit to the school.

We knew we were home when the first thing we saw when we got on campus was the soccer field!!!

The Rollins soccer coaches had been watching Chicky play for several months and were very impressed.

We were pleased with their program and the college’s academic curriculum and student environment.  The school’s small campus will be perfect for a small-town girl…

Chicky made a verbal commitment.

Then began the long process of applying for early admission.

Rollins is one of the top schools in the Southeast.  It’s also a small college.  They can afford to be choosy.

It can be nerve-wracking to sit and wait for that letter…especially when it’s something you want so desperately.

And that’s when the mailman brought my second favorite thing (my favorite being yarn, of course).

To celebrate, Chicky ate on the Red Plate tonight.

I’ll write on the back of it tomorrow…noting the special-ness of today.

It’s kind of strange to think, but by this time next year, Chicky will be coming home from her first semester away.

Time is gonna fly…I just know it.

Back to Real Life

So, I’m finally caught up on blogging and regular “stuff.”

Since returning from the cruise, my life has been NUTS!

It took over a week to catch up on laundry, and this was in between subbing at school and attending Chicky’s high school soccer games.

I don’t know if I’ve told you, but I’ve had a long-term subbing job for one teacher.  The assignment began the first week of November and goes through Friday of next week.

I’ve been teaching Marketing Essentials and Blueprints for Professional Success.  These are, traditionally, “easy” classes…electives taken by seniors, juniors, and sophomores.

I’m so happy that I’ve had this assignment because it has given me the opportunity to gain experience executing lesson plans on a long-term basis, grading papers, and developing more meaningful relationships with students and staff.

Some of the things I’ve seen and heard in my classes have been a bit of a shock.

Probably one of the most difficult things has been the discovery that several of my students are expecting babies.

Oy, but my heart has been saddened.  However, I have also been pleased because the girls have chosen to carry their babies to term.

I love how God orchestrates situations…matching people up.

As soon as I found out about my expectant students, I reached out to my Oddball Charity Knitting friends.  Shandeh sent me two blankets, which I quickly gifted (one of my students is due next week, so I didn’t want to wait)…

One of the girls looked absolutely amazed that others would knit a blanket for someone they didn’t know.  She gave me a hug after, warming my heart.

As I said, soccer has also kept me busy.  Chicky spent one game running balls for the JV team (standing on the sideline retrieving out-of-bounds balls), and I worked in the concession stand.

Parents are asked to donate a crock pot of chili when it’s their turn to work in the concession stand, so I had carefully made my way to the fields.

Well, apparently I wasn’t careful enough because this is what I had to deal with after the game…

Um, yeah…it looks like something the dog regurgitated, eh?

I actually haven’t dealt with it yet.  I did pull the mat out of my car and left it in my driveway.  See, it was raining when I got home from the game, so I was hoping that the rain would wash it off.

It didn’t.

That was two days ago.

Um, yeah.

So much for being caught up.

Think I’ll take a hose to it…tomorrow.

So, real life isn’t quite as delectable as that of the jet-set.  But, it’s my life, and I can’t complain…too much, that is.

Day 8 – Back to Ft. Lauderdale

Day 8 of the cruise was all about pulling into port and getting off the ship.

I had scheduled my family to be in the first group of people debarking the ship, so I rose at the dark hour of 5:30.  I wanted to make sure I got breakfast (Holland America tries to ensure that passengers leave the ship happy).  I took one last stroll around and caught these pictures…

I always say that sunset is my favorite time of day, but sunrise ain’t half bad either…

Another ship had pulled into port beside us.  It was soooo pretty…all lit up…

I managed to catch sight of this boat on the horizon…

Guess what else I saw…

Another plane! A fitting way to end the trip given all of my “plane sightings” throughout the cruise.

I eventually returned to the room, woke up the kids and the Mr., and finished some last-minute packing.

And then we waited.

This is often the longest part of the cruise…waiting to get called to the gangway.

While I sat, I went through some of the literature we had acquired during the trip and found this map of the ship (sure wish I’d found it on Day 1!!)…

My group was finally called, and we emerged to find that tho sun had risen…

Somewhere in the parking garage (pictured below) was our car…

Bex wanted one last photo session before leaving Ft. Lauderdale…

So long cruise ships…

As we exited, we thanked everyone we saw.  We were so pampered throughout this trip that leaving was uber-hard.

A HUGE thanks goes out to Grand Pooba and Coupon Queen for their generosity.  This was an AMAZING trip!

Day 7 – Half Moon Cay

Day 7 of the cruise was a cold one!  I couldn’t believe the wind as I opened up the door on my cabin deck to take a peek.

My group ate a quick breakfast and headed out to catch the slip to Half Moon Cay, Holland America’s private island.

The wind was cold as we made out way through the water.  I saw people riding horses at the water’s edge…

We could see people already frolicking in the water…

Sure, there were people in the water, but the sky looked ominous…

The sun refused to peek through the clouds…

The flags bore witness to the wind’s speed…

We got to the beach and found front-row lounges, where I took the opportunity to photograph Bex in front of the clear, turquoise water…

It was a little strange to see the ship sitting a couple hundred yards off shore…

The neat thing about this island…besides the water…was the soft, creamy sand.  I’ve visited many beaches over the years.  Beaches on the eastern coast of Florida have a lot of debris on it.  The Gulf Coast’s beaches consist of white sand with very little “trash” in it.  So, the sand on Half Moon Cay reminded me a bit of home…

We braved the cold, wrapped in towels.  I dug my toes into the sand…determined to wait for the sun to make an appearance…

It was comforting to see a lifeguard on duty…

The kids eventually got in the water.  They said it was warm once you got in, but they were quick to wrap up in towels when they came out.  The sand caked on the bottom of Chicky’s feet while she tried to warm up…

Super D, my brother-in-law, is very artistic, so when he saw the sand, he quickly realized he had a huge canvas to work on.  This was his work of art…

Auburn almost delivered in THE BIG GAME...but not quite...

And still we waited for the sun…which finally made a brief appearance…

The towels came off as we took the opportunity to tan our legs…

From left to right...Grand Pooba, Coupon Queen, and the Mr.

The island had a few amenities for its guests.  One was a tiki hut.  This sign was posted above it…

On a warmer day, this sentiment would have been especially true

By 11:00, we were starving and more than ready for the barbecue lunch the ship’s crew had prepared for us.  There was a band playing “island music,” which added to the Caribbean feel.

Later, I saw people walking around with some kind of koozies, and I just had to have one.  I was already seeing myself taking one to work…filled with ice water, of course.

The koozies were being sold in the tiki hut I’d spied above, so I did what any vacationer would do and got myself one…

By this time, Chicky and I were ready to head back to the ship.  We had never completely warmed up and were eager for hot showers, so we caught a slip back “home.”  I saw the sun make an appearance…great…perfect timing, as usual…

Once aboard, I walked around the ship, taking photos of the island…

From this view, you can sort-of see how the island gets its name...from its half-moon shape...

The sun invited me to come back out to play, but I resisted…

Bex insisted on another photo...

While the others were still playing on the beach, Chicky and I began the dreary process of packing…

Later in the afternoon, after everyone had returned to the ship, the kids and I attended the Debarking Session.  Passengers were lured there by the promise of free champagne…

Dinner that night was melancholy as we had to say goodbye to our table attendants…

Trisna was a very humble, quiet man who unobtrusively filled our water and iced tea glasses.

We were treated to a parade of the Baked Alaska, which had been specially prepared by the chefs.  It was a wonderful way to end the trip.

As I lay my head on my pillow that night, I thought about all of the sights I had seen and the nice people I had met.  Although I was sad the trip was coming to an end, I was starting to get excited about seeing my furry babies.

But still, I had the morning of Day 8 to look forward to…

Day 6 – Thanksgiving on the Ocean

Day 6 of the cruise was Thanksgiving!  It felt a little strange not prepping for lunch at Chez AuburnChick, although I will admit to a bit of guilty joy at not having to coordinate the cook times of half a dozen dishes.

As the ship lazily made its way northwestward, we settled in for commitment-free day.

We all took time to admire the bling we had acquired during our recent shopping forays…

Rooster's new shoes...from the exotic store Foot Locker, which was located in St. Thomas.

I really like the bracelet I purchased in St. Thomas.

The shop on the ship held a big sale outside on the poolside deck.  Rooster picked up this…

Because I ran out of t-shirts during the trip, I felt justified in getting these…

The frogs on the white shirt reminded me of Senor Frog in Puerto Rico

Despite our lack of activity, we managed to keep our room stewards busy.  They left us this cute animal after their morning clean-up session…

Dog!

Days at sea are all about relaxing in the sun…

And knitting…

I took a peek at the daily program, which listed a bunch of activities…

The kids and I took in a movie, enjoying the popcorn that the crew provided in neat little snack sacks.

Lunch came and went, as did Team Trivia.  The sun continued to shine…ahhhh…so beautiful…

What a lovely day it was, only enhanced by the fine dinner awaiting us…

Shrimp Cocktail...so yummy that I ordered a second (I'm such a pig sometimes)

Steak! Not very traditional for Thanksgiving, I know, but the turkey came with sweet potatoes, which I can't stand!

Fruit and cheese for dessert

Super Sis got the dessert below.  If you look closely, you’ll see that her pie is broken into two pieces.  We teased her because she had given our table attendant a fit when trying to order her dinner.  She changed her mind so often that she confused him.  Hence, we told her the chef was mad at her and sent out an imperfect dessert.  heehee

And so ended Day 6.  As the waves rocked me gently to sleep, I began to dream about Day 7…
