Beware: Couponer on the Warpath

In the words of a clerk I encountered today, “This must have been internet coupon printing day.”

Yes, it sure was.  At least in the AuburnChick home (and that of anyone who keeps up with couponing blogs).

Before I get any farther in this post, please allow me to pause a moment and give thanks that my mail arrives late in the day.  I checked my mailbox as I headed out to do some shopping, and I found this…

I wondered what free thing I had signed up for, until I opened the note…

Then I remembered.

A couple of weeks ago, I had read this post by Linda.  The next day, Linda offered a drawing for five people to receive their own “Thanks, Not Cranks” bracelets, and I signed up (to give to Chicky, of course.  Just kidding.  Sort of.).

Then, something neat happened.  Linda’s pastor offered bracelets to everyone who had commented on the above-mentioned posts, so we were all winners!

As evidenced by the photos you’ve already seen, I received mine today.

Here’s a close-up…

Ok…so back to the original point of this post.

As I said, I was headed out to take advantage of some sales I’d read about today.  I figured I’d start wearing the bracelet tomorrow.

Good thing, too.  You’ll find out why shortly.

First, I visited Target, where I picked up these…for free…only having to pay tax (read about the deal here)…

Next, I drove to Walgreens, where I picked up the two, taller bottles in the center, only paying $.50 + tax for each (read about this deal here)…

Ignore the other four bottles.  They come into play in the next part of my story.

So, the Walgreens I visited only had two bottles left, which I bought.  Determined not to let some other savvy couponer beat me to the punch, I proceeded to drive to another Walgreens across town.

I entered and was happy to discover plenty of Soft Scrub bottles.  Picking up four, I went to the cash register, where the clerk made the comment I quoted at the beginning of this post.

She took a look at my coupons (I had two sets that included a B1G1 and a $1.50/1) and seemed at a loss as to what to do.  She called over a manager who closely eyed the coupons and said I could only use one per set of bottles.

Excuse me, I said.  I am the Coupon Princess, specially trained by the Coupon Queen, and you are trying to tell me I can’t use these coupons?  Apparently you didn’t pass Couponing 101.

I heard the male customer behind me gasp.

There we were, two young-ish (I’m still young at almost 40, right), petite females squaring off over coupons.

She was insistent, but I refused to give up my stance.  I am honest (although I do make mistakes now and again, but not this time), and I wasn’t trying to get away with coupon fraud.

She stood her ground.

Whatever happened to the adage, “The customer is always right?”  Guess it went south along with the economy.

Anyhoo, she told me that she would have to check with her manager, who would be in tomorrow.

Yeah, right.  Meanwhile, you’re going to sell those bottles to someone who doesn’t have coupons and make more money.

I

Don’t

Think

So.

I asked for the number of Walgreen’s Corporate Office.

I was going to the top…Customer Service, anyhoo.

I called right there from the store and reached one of the nicest representatives I’ve ever talked to.

I unbiasedly (yeah, right) explained the situation, and she agreed that the manager should have allowed me to use all of my coupons.

I wanted to stick out my tongue like a toddler.  Maybe I kind of did…in my head anyhow.

I offered to hand the phone over to the gal (Super Sis would be mortified as she is so much nicer than me and would never push such an issue).

The rep said she had no control over how managers ran their store, but she offered to file a complaint.

Uh oh.

There’s that word.  The one that’s similar to the one on the bracelet I received in the mail.

Guess what?

The bracelet wasn’t on my wrist.

“FILE THE COMPLAINT!” I said in a rush.

I asked the manager for the address of the store, and she tartly provided it.

The rep heard it all.  She promised that I would receive a call within two days.

Meanwhile, the manager said she would put the bottles in the back…to save them for me.

I left, still fuming.

I called Coupon Queen to COMPLAIN about what had just happened.

And then I had an idea.  It was as if a light illuminated the interior of the car, even though it was now almost 6pm, and I had been shopping for over two hours.

Wanna know what I did?

Of course you do.  This is AuburnChick’s life…full of drama but true to every detail except the part of the conversation where I said I am a Coupon Princess (I wouldn’t be so bold as to admit that in public).

I decided to carry the Walgreens weekly ad I had picked up in the first store into Target, get them to price-match (Walmart does this too, by the way), AND use my coupons.

Sometimes I can’t believe how smart I am, cause it worked like a charm!

I walked out of one of my favorite stores with four, $.50 bottles of Soft Scrub (minus the $.05 credit for using my own reusable bag).

Cha Ching.

I’m happy, except that now I’m going to have to figure out what I’m going to say when the Walgreens manager calls me back.  See, I’ll be wearing the bracelet by then, and the whole point of it is to watch what I say…try not to complain…be thankful for all things.

I think I’m going to be switching that bracelet back and forth a lot!

My Week – In Picures

The cookies were buy 2, get 1 free, making them $.50 each! The cereal was $.75 after my $2 coupon! Woo Hoo!

This is one of those nyla bone things that we've had for about three years. Pele cared not one iota about it until Molly dragged it in from the yard. Now they take turns with it.

Molly thinks everything belongs to her, so she's waiting for Pele to make a wrong move and drop the bone. He's watching her out of the corner of his eye.

I'm a happy girl, yes I am, yes I am!

Pele and Aubie love hanging out in Rooster's digs.

The Mr. woke up to find a flat tire on his work car. Great way to start the day, eh?

More candles! I paid $.19 for each set of two! It was such a great deal that I went out the next day and got six more, using up all of the coupons I had (can't let those coupons go to waste!!).

While shopping at Target yesterday, a lady behind me in line had one of these in her buggy.

I honed in on the red clearance price sticker...

Don't you just want to make a waffle now?

It folds and stands up for easy storage!

GREAT Deals at Target!

So, I haven’t posted super in-depth shopping tales because I was worried that maybe I was starting to bore you.  But, Tabby told me she misses my stories, so I thought I would share my latest and greatest.

This week, I scored BIG TIME…two different days…at Target.

I got the stuff below for $1.08…

The next day I went back to Target and did even better by only paying $.52 for everything in the picture…

Everything in both pictures was free.  All I paid was tax.

Now, I know you’re wondering how in the world I do what I do.

First off, I am subscribed to Attention Target Shoppers.  It’s a free website that lists the latest and greatest Target deals.  By using Google Reader, I am able to keep up with posts on all of my favorite shopping sites.

Now, the way I got everything free was that I was able to capitalize on HUGE coupons that were money makers on several items, thus allowing me to use the overages to help pay for the other items.

There were $1.50 mfr coupons off of one Degree deodorant or body spray and $3 Target coupon off of one Degree deodorant AND one Degree body spray.

The body spray was on sale for $3.29, and the trial size deodorant (located in the travel size bins), only cost $.97.  Many times, coupons will specify “Excludes trial sizes,” but my coupons said “Any size.”  Thus, I bought the cheapest items I could find.  By using a $1.50 mfr coupon on each deodorant and mist (saving $3) and stacking them with the $3 Target coupon, I made $1.74.

It might make more sense if I list it this way:

Body Mist:
Deodorant:  Total:
$3.29
$0.97

$4.26

Subtracting Coupons (“Q”)…

Target Q:
Mist Q:
Deo Q:
Total:
$3.00
$1.50
$1.50

-$1.74

See how that works?

I did something similar for the Ponds facial wipes, although I did not have a Target coupon to stack.  Instead, I had a $1.50 mfr coupon.  The wipes were the trial sizes and only cost $.97, so I made $.53 on each one.

The dog food was $4.26, and I had a $3 mfr coupon (from last weekend’s paper), making it only $1.26.  However, I used the overage from the other items to help pay for them, so I got them free.

I also had $3 mfr off of the Neosporin Lip Balm.  It cost $3.34.  Again, the overage from my other deals was substantial enough to pay the remaining $.34.

In my second picture, you’ll note the absence of the lip balm.  Thus, I had to find “fillers” to help offset the overage.  You see, Target doesn’t like its items zeroed out.  So, I got two loaves of bread and a trial size soap (which we had also run out of) for free.

God’s timing, as usual, was perfect.  We had run out of dry dog food (yes, all of those free bags were GONE!), and we also needed bread…and we needed both items to get through the week until the Mr. got paid.

What an awesome God, and what an awesome week for shopping!!

AuburnChick Loves Clearance Items!

Yesterday, I went shopping at Target and picked up some GREAT deals!

I’ve recently discovered Attention Target Shoppers.  If you’ve never visited this site, I strongly advise you to do so.  It will only take one post to convince you to subscribe to it in Google Reader.

After finding some good deals listed, I headed out.  I had the entire afternoon to myself with Chicky and the Mr. gone to see Guy Friend and watch a Rollins game (remember that she will be playing soccer at Rollins next year) and Rooster playing in the band at  an away football game, so the natural thing to do was shop!

Here’s what I got…

I spent $19.18 and saved $37.90 for a savings of 66%.  Let’s look at how I did it.

First, let let say that I’m going to include savings percentages on individual items.  I always run my numbers before I purchase something to make sure I’m getting a decent deal.  I have gotten to the point where I won’t buy something if I can’t save at least 60% or more on it.

Snuggle is on sale this week for $3.99.  One of the coupon inserts had a $3 coupon, making each bottle $.99.  The savings on each bottle was 75%.  I cannot wait for Chicky to see it because we don’t use our dryer, and she’s missed the nice smell from dryer sheets.

Skippy is listed for $2.09.  I matched a $1/1 Target coupon with a $.40 mfr coupon, making these $.69 each.  Think about this…that’s a savings of 67% on this product alone!

Now…clearance items are the best…especially when you can find coupons on them.  The Rimmel was regularly $5.29, but it was marked with a clearance sticker of $2.64.  I used a $1 mfr to make this $1.64…a savings of 69%.

That was all this Target had, so I headed to the SuperTarget located on the beach.

I went specifically looking for the razors, air fresheners, and Febreeze (below) but found an unexpected deal when I spied the shaving cream on clearance for $2.30 from $3.29.  I am so glad I took my P&G savings booklets, because I pulled them out and found a $1/2 mfr.  Since each twin pack had two items, I used one coupon for each duo, making each set $1.30.  Divide that in half, and I spent $.65 per can.  You cannot buy shaving cream that cheap.  Overall, I saved 60%.

The razors were also on clearance…marked down from $7.94 to $6.74.  I had a $4 mfr, taking the price down to $2.74, making for a savings of 65%.  I figured it was cheaper to buy new razors than the refills for them.  Sure, it’s probably not the “greenest” thing to do, but I have to save money right now.

I had $1/1 mfr on Febreeze.  I had read that there were small bottles located near the cash registers.  These weren’t available in my “town” Target, but I found them at the beach.  They were on clearance for $1.67 from $1.99, dropping my price (after the coupon) to $.67 for a savings of 66%.  These will be great to stick in the car.

One of my favorite deals involved the reed diffusers above.  They are on sale for $4.49, and I had printed $3.50 mfr coupons from the internet some time back, keeping them filed for over a month.  The coupons made them $1 each for a savings of 77%.

I was thrilled to walk out of that second Target, although I did notice when I studied the receipt, that one of my $3.50 coupons had not come off.  I walked right back into the store, approached the cashier with the issue, and walked back out with the $3.50 in my pocket…which she gladly refunded.  ALWAYS check your receipts!

I know you’re probably sitting there shaking your head in amazement.  You, too, can do this.  All you need to do is read the sites I’ve provided above and in the sidebar on my blog.  These blogs do the work for you!  All you need to do is keep your eyes peeled, your coupons filed, and your head in the game.

Spook-tacular Shopping Bags

Today I went to Target and picked up a few items.  For every two bags of M&M’s you purchase this week, you get a free, reusable shopping bag.

Although I’m not a huge fan of Halloween, these bags were simply too good to pass up (as were the M&M’s).  I didn’t get to use my bags at Target, but I did carry them to Publix, the next store I visited, and had a lot of fun watching the look on the cashier’s face as she bagged my groceries…

One neat thing you should know is that for every reusable bag you actually use at Target, you’ll get a $.05 credit on that shopping bill.  It will show up on your receipt as a Target coupon.

What a great way to encourage recycling!!

Is It Really Only Tuesday?

I cannot believe that it’s only Tuesday night.  I feel like I’ve already been through the wringer this week.

Monday was an interesting day as far as shopping goes.

I had a bit of a disappointment, missing out on $8 of free groceries.  Still, though, I walked out of the store with 12 boxes of TGI Fridays frozen snacks, a whole chicken, and an onion for $.16.

Yeah, you read that correctly.  Sixteen cents, and I was disappointed.  Even though I saved $49.14.  Sigh…

In fact, I was so frustrated that I came home and sat on the couch like a zombie.  I didn’t even take a picture of my loot.

Rooster is having a bit of a crisis (regular student stuff) in one of his classes, so that also threw me for a loop, making my day that much worse.

I called my mother-in-law, expecting a consoling ear.

What did I get?

A question:  “Will you send me the coupons you couldn’t use?”

A true couponer at heart, eh?

I sent her half since the coupons don’t expire until next year (I’m a couponer at heart too).

I felt sorry for myself for a couple of hours…until I received a phone call from a gal I used to work with.

She has started her own food pantry, and I’ve delivered a couple of bags of food to her.

She asked me if I would help her spend a $100 donation she recently received.  She’s a new couponer and is feeling a little overwhelmed.

You know, I have to admit that as we talked, my focus was redirected…off of myself and on to others…just as it should be.

What a wonderful God we have…to remind me in the midst of my self-induced pity that I don’t need to be greedy, and I would be better served in helping others.

With my head on straight again and my heart uplifted, I headed out to Target.

I bought eight bags of dog food for $.26 each (total out-of-pocket was $3.64) and saved $33.84…

I went to bed feeling a little better.

Tuesday morning loomed, and I started off the day by subbing.

Let’s just say that I had some interesting classes.  They were vocal, but we all kept good attitudes…even after I scored three cell phones (one per class).  I actually did the Happy Dance when I nabbed the third suspect.  The kids chuckled.

After school I headed back to Publix.  It’s the last day of last week’s sales, and I wanted to get a few more things…

Wanna know what I paid?

$1.88.

The only thing that wasn’t free was the orange (plus tax on the other items).

Hooya!

Good thing I saved so much and was in a good mood.

As Rooster sat on the couch finishing up his math homework, his friend from across the street called and asked to borrow To Kill a Mockingbird, the book their English classes are currently reading.

Uh oh…Rooster left his book at school, not realizing that his five-chapter reading assignment is due tomorrow.

By this point, it was 7pm.

Good thing he has a smart Mama.

I went online and looked up the hours of my local library.

On Tuesdays, it is open until 8pm, and it had three copies of this book available!

Off I ran to check one out.

As I drove home, I shook my head.

I can’t believe it’s only Tuesday.  I think tomorrow I might just stay in my jammies and snuggle with the dogs.

How to Stack Coupons

I constantly run across people who don’t know that you can stack coupons when you shop.

In fact, I did not know this before I got serious this summer.

I thought I would explain how this works.

First, let’s talk about the difference between manufacturer and store coupons.

This is a manufacturer coupon…

Do you see how it says “Manufacturer’s Coupon” in black across the top?  This means that the company that produces the item produced the coupon.

Every time a store accepts one of these coupons, they, in turn, redeem them for the face value of the coupon.  In other words, the manufacturer of that product reimburses the store for allowing the customer to use it.

Now, a store coupon is a little different…

The top coupon is from Publix, and it clearly says “Store Coupon” across the top.  It also has Publix in bold at the bottom.

The second coupon says “Super Target Web Coupon” across the top.  Any Target store will accept them.

These coupons are produced by the stores themselves.  They receive no reimbursement for the face value.  Manufacturers do not produce these.

Stores that accept competitor coupons are, in essence, “losing” money because their competitor is obviously not going to reimburse them for an item they wanted a customer to purchase in their own store.

However, stores that do this use it as a lure to entice customers to shop at their stores.  You may go in for that product, but you’ll probably buy something else while you’re there.

Many stores allow you to “stack” coupons by using a store coupon AND a manufacturer coupon on the same product.

In fact, Target’s coupon policy, found here (some people suggest you print it and keep it in your wallet…just in case you need to present it to a manager), clearly states that customers can use a Target and manufacturer coupon on the same item.

This can lead to huge savings!

Take, for instance, my recent purchase of TGI Fridays frozen snacks.

I stacked a $2/1 Publix coupon with a $1 manufacturer coupon.  That dropped my out-of-pocket expense from $3.59 to $.59.

Of course, you know that I was able to save more because this product is B1G1 this week.  Publix policy allows customers to use coupons on both items in their B1G1 offers.  That is why I made money on this deal.

You can sweeten your deal further if you get coupons that say, “Save ‘x’ amount on ‘y’ product when you buy ‘z’ item.”

This is how I got free barbecue sauce a few weeks ago.  I stacked mac and cheese coupons and then got the sauce for free.

If you have any questions, please feel free to comment.  I do respond (many of you know this already).

More Shopping Deals

It’s Monday, and despite a busy weekend, I had coupons that were expiring today.  So, instead of putting up my feet and eating bon bons all day (which we all know is what semi-employed people do), I had to actually plan on getting dressed and showered (you can thank me for the shower).

I did the prep work last night and set out this morning.

My first stop was Publix, where I came home with this batch of goodies…

It doesn’t look like much, but I’m at the point where I have a stockpile of the “extras” and am focusing more on the essentials and anything that is nearly free.

Aunt Jemima frozen products –  B1G1 @ $2.69
Used: $1/2 mfg coupons (one per set of two) AND four $1/1 Publix store coupons (one per box) — remember…you can stack mfg and store coupons

The meat was on sale, but the bread wasn’t (the kids need sandwiches, so it was a must-have item).

In addition to the above coupons, I had a $5 Publix coupon (off of a total $30 purchase), which I handed my cashier before I gave her the other coupons.

Total before coupons: $64.39
Total after coupons:
$15.04
Savings of $49.35 or 77%

I ran home, put away the refrigerated and frozen items, and headed back out.  This time, my destination was Target, where I purchased the following…

I took advantage of some good deals.

Red Baron Pizza – 4/$10 ($2.50 each)
Used: $.75 mfg coupons (one per item) that I had cut off of the boxes of pizza I bought the last time they were on sale

Even though I’m still tired from spending the weekend in the sun, I feel energized after a good day of shopping and saving.

The Mr. Needs a Shave

A couple of weeks ago, the Mr. handed me this…

It happens to be his empty razor cartridge holder.

It was his not-so-subtle way of letting me know that I needed to buy him more.

“Wait,” I said, “until I can find a coupon.”

Poor guy.

He waited a week, reminded me of his request, and then reminded again…this time with the admonition that he had just cut himself on a blade that was getting more and more dull by the day.

Fortunately (for both of us), Target had Gillette Fusion razors on sale this week, and Your’s Truly had coupons.

Here’s a picture of everything I bought today…

Now, let’s talk deals.

First of all, I bought everything in three separate transactions.

For Transaction #1:

I used the following coupons…

Let’s talk $$.

First off, the red Gillette coupon was a Target peelie that I found a month or two ago when I bought Venus Razors.  I only grabbed one because I didn’t think it was all that great of a deal.  Turns out I was wrong.

To get the $4 off, I had to buy a box of razor cartridges and a twin-pack of gel (which I later returned because I didn’t have a coupon on it).

So, the breakdown:

Razor – On sale for $7.94
Target Coupon – $4.00
Mfg coupon (which you can stack with store coupons) – $2.00
Total:  $1.94

I had a coupon for free Gillette Shampoo with the purchase of the razor.  The coupon did not specify a particular size bottle, nor did it specify a price (up to “X” amount), so I bought the largest bottle – $6.79 value
Total:  FREE

I had a coupon for free Gillette Body Wash with the purchase of the razor – $3.99
TotalFREE

Catridges – $13.29 (ouch!)
Mfg Coupon – $4.00
Total: $9.29

I had a coupon for free Gillette Deodorant with the purchase of the cartridges.  I found a deodorant with a free sample size attached.  $4.24
TotalFREE

I had a coupon for free Gillette Shaving Gel with the purchase of the cartridges – $3.59
TotalFREE

Now here’s the awesome part.  This week, customers get a $5 Target gift card when they purchase two Gillette razors or cartridges (or a combination).  Woo Hoo!

Because I buy two papers each week, I had enough coupons for an almost identical deal – Transaction #2….

For this transaction, I had the following coupons…

This time, I didn’t have the $4 peelie, but I had something better…my $5 Target gift card.  So, I saved a dollar more than the previous round and got another set of free items!

Once again, at the end of the deal, I received a $5 gift card.

Time for Transaction #3.

Chicky has soccer games this weekend, so I knew we would need water.  We’ll be driving to South Carolina, and I like to keep a cooler in the back.  We’ll drink on the water all weekend…on the way, at the hotel, and during games.

The water was on sale for $3.99

One added treat:  two Twix bars.

Of course I had coupons for these.  Yesterday I received my last two free chocolate bar coupons.  I had originally planned on using them at Walgreens, which has Mars candy for $.49 this week, but on a whim, I stuck them in my back pocket and thought I’d check out Target’s prices.  The coupons are only good for up to $.85.  Target sold them for $.52.

Free is free, and knocking one store off of my list made me happy.

I used the $5 gift card from the previous transaction to pay for this transaction and walked out with $.90 left on the gift card.

So, do you want to know the grand total for the day?

Total spent:  $25.95

Total saved (coupons, gift cards, etc.):  $50.26

Total I would have spent if I didn’t use coupons:  $76.21

I saved 66% today!!

Now, I’ve gotta tell you that I had one of the most patient cashiers ever.  She never once lost her cool, despite having to void two entire transactions because I was dumb.  The first time, I didn’t get the twin pack of gel, and rather than make the customers behind me wait, she voided the transaction, let me run get it, waited on the next person, then started over with me.

For the second transaction, I had forgotten to get the second box of cartridges.  Because she had already completed the transaction (including the coupon part), the register wouldn’t kick out the gift card, so she had to void the entire thing while I ran and got another box from the shelves.  When I returned, she was just finishing the voids, and she started over.

To say that I was the object of everyone’s attention would be like saying there’s a sun in the sky.

Yeah.

But you do what you’ve gotta do when you want to save money and when your husband needs a shave.  He should be able to shave for a year without getting another cut…from a dull blade, that is.
