15 Weeks

I’m sitting here, writing this blog, and marveling at the fact that, as of 11:30pm tonight, it will be fifteen weeks since I broke my ankle.

There weren’t any significant changes in my ankle this week…at least not that I could see.

My new sneakers are wonderful.  If I wasn’t walking so slowly, I hardly suspect that people would know that I’d hurt it.

The first thing my physical therapist asks when I walk in twice a week is, “How’s the ankle feeling?”

Honestly, it’s a day-by-day thing.  Sometimes, I know from the way it feels when I put on my shoes, how it’s going to do.

Other days, it surprises me.

I’m never pain-free, and I’m always hobbling by the end of the day.  The amount of swelling varies but is never completely gone.

I’m not complaining, mind you.  I am still so grateful for the healing that has occurred and the healing that is continuing.

I started doing some stretching exercises this past week in an attempt to alleviate the knee pain that started a couple of weeks ago.  My PT says it’s because I’m not strong yet.  I think it’s due to my right leg being underused for all of those weeks.  I lost flexibility in my knee.  I’m borrowing moves from my Piyo workout routine.  I love the Warrior positions.  I’ve been practicing my balancing…not easy, let me tell you!  Down dog looks rather ugly, but I can do it with my heels lifted off the floor.

I also discovered that I can still do push-ups!  That was a pleasant surprise.  My upper body is strong because of all of the walking I did via crutches.

I’m also doing some good old fashioned stretching.

On Saturday, I went out and did a little shoe shopping…yeah, again.

This time, I was on the hunt for stylish sandals that offer support for my non-arched, pronated right foot (the broken one).

Last Sunday, my friend, Barb, had told me about Vionics.  I’d never heard about this company, but when Pamela commented on my Hodgepodge post last Wednesday and mentioned Vionics, I knew I needed to check them out.

I went to a local store first and saw this display when I walked in…

The staff was incredibly knowledgeable.  They used some of the same words that my PT had used to describe my foot, which made me feel a lot more comfortable.  I was a little dismayed (but I didn’t show it) when one of the clerks told me that she could tell which ankle I’d broken…that my legs looked nothing alike (ignore my ugly toenails…I’d just taken off the polish).

I don’t know why, but my heart hurt.  I know that I’ve made a lot of progress since I broke it.  Heck, I’m walking for heaven’s sake.  Maybe it’s vanity, but I want things to look normal again.  Maybe it’s fear that they won’t.  That’s a question I’m going to tuck away to ask my surgeon when I go to a followup visit in April.

I was having a rough morning with my ankle, though.  You can see this from the redness.  There’s still a lot of healing going on.  Plus, one of the other PTs told me that foot injuries are the worst because of the impact that gravity has on them.

Anyhow…back to my shoe story.

I was super honest with the clerks and told them that I was only looking…trying to get an idea of how the supportive shoes felt on my feet.  I tried on three pairs and fell in love with these flip flops…

I don’t think I’ve ever worn flip flops with support in the arches before.

They felt like butter…smooth.

Oh my.

For the price tag, they better!  We’re talking $74.95 or something like that.  I didn’t buy them.

I tried on two more pairs, which I did not photograph.  I absolutely could not stand one pair…the straps were just ugly.

This girl is NOT about to get old lady shoes, despite my need for arch support.

Vanity is indeed my middle name.

The other pair I tried on looked nice…on the shelf…but on my feet, not so much.  I have long feet, but the clerk said that they are thin, so wider bottom shoes don’t work on my feet.

Dang.

I went to Dillard’s next and was surprised with the selection.

I tried these on…

Oh.

My.

Goodness.

I.  Loved.  Them.

And another hefty price tag…

I also tried on a pair of flats, which I didn’t take a picture of but liked.  I needed a smaller size, though, which the store didn’t have.

One other pair of shoes I tried on were these…

They weren’t Vionics.  I can’t remember the name now.  I liked the look but was concerned that there wasn’t enough support.

So, I went home without buying a single pair, but I will go back at some point and buy at least two of them.

That ended the week, except for a day spent cooking…prepping for the week…and washing dishes.

Maple-Nut Cookie Bars

Maple-Nut Cookie Bars

I continue to find myself grateful that I am able to drive, run errands, and work around the house.  These are things I couldn’t do for so many weeks that rather than being chores, I consider them privileges.

Perspective is everything, y’all.

Oh No!

“Oh goodness,” said one student as she entered my room today…”Mrs. AuburnChick is wearing her heels today.”

I love that my shoes announce the sassiness that is about to commence.

Sassy Shoes

Tuesday, there was an incident in my classroom (nothing uber serious) that led me to do some reflection on my classroom management procedures.

I consider myself a teacher who does have good classroom management skills; however, I began to feel as though my students were starting to slack off.

I didn’t entirely place the blame on them because I am their fearless leader and responsible for setting the tone of what is and what isn’t acceptable.

With this in mind, I decided to pull in the reins a bit and tighten things up.

The first order of business was dressing the part.

Now, you guys know how much I love shoes…especially my heels.

Take a look at what found their way out of my closet yesterday…

When I paired them with grey slacks, a dressy blouse, and some bling…well…I had the whole package together.

As my students approached my door, they said things like, “Mrs. AuburnChick, you’re all dressed up…” and “You’re taller…” and “I like those shoes…”

A strange thing happened afterward.

When I gave them the signal for attention, they listened…and continued to listen.

My second class, in particular, which is quite smart but oh so prone to chatter, was quiet as they completed their bellwork and silent reading.

There is a saying that “Clothes make the man.”

I think that this is partially true.

How I dressed yesterday affected my attitude, and that attitude, in turn, affected my students.

It was a very interesting thing to watch as it played out.

Although I haven’t been able to wear my heels much this year thanks to some bad blisters I got the first week of school, I am determined to figure out a blister-free way to keep them on.

Not only can I reach the top of the Smartboard, but I think I’m reaching my students in a different way…a more serious way.

It is definitely something to ponder on…

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Friday night, I stayed up until 1am.

The reason?

Lesson plans.

I had succeeded in completing my plans early the previous weekend, and I had really enjoyed having the rest of the weekend off, so I forced myself to repeat the routine.

I am so glad I did, for I woke up to this…

20130414-000911.jpg

The Mr. and I headed out early to attend a pancake breakfast…a fundraiser for a local traveling basketball team.

Then we ran to Office Depot for a couple of boxes of glue sticks for a project my classes will be working on.

Before we headed home, we stopped at Kohl’s, one of my favorite stores, where I picked up this pair of shoes…

20130414-001155.jpg

The Mr. also bought me a blouse that had caught my eye.

We made it home for lunch, and then I left again…this time for an afternoon of pampering.

I had spent some time on Pinterest…planning the next method of torture for my nail tech. She’s not fond of the designs I beg her to add each time I visit her.

She left after filling in my nails, and another girl painted them.,,

20130414-001519.jpg

Does they look Spring/Summery to you?

Of course, I had to get my feet done too…

20130414-001614.jpg

I was so relaxed.

I didn’t think much about work. In fact, I didn’t think much about anything but simply let my brain zone out.

I feel rejuvenated.

It was definitely a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

Sole Pampering

No, I haven’t flubbed the title of today’s post.

The reason?

Because Chicky came home last night to spend part of her Spring Break with us, and we decided to visit the mall at the beach.

First of all, this mall is home to my favorite pizza at Red Brick Pizza.  Yum!

Second, I’d heard, through the grapevine, that Dillard’s was having an AMAZING shoe sale.

Dillard’s just happens to be at this mall.

Chicky also needed a dress for a wedding she’ll be attending in a couple of weeks.

Although I am not fond of shopping, I do love my shoes and was thrilled to find the following pairs, in my size, on the clearance racks…

This is a pair of Gianni Bini.  They were originally $90 but had been marked down to $32.  After an additional 40% discount, taken at the register, I got them for $19!

They’ve even got sparkles!

The other pair I found are a bit more practical but the color I’ve been looking for ever since a different pair of the same color broke.  I have a certain pair of dress pants that are a strange color…kind of deep purple-ish/brown-ish.  Buying these shoes was a necessity to be able to wear my pants again!

The price point on this pair was the same as the other pair.

Meanwhile, Chicky got a pair of boots that were NOT on sale.

The Mr. paid for those.

We all agree that I got the best deal, but Chicky is thrilled with her pair.

We’re just happy to have her home and more than willing to splurge a bit on her.

Of course, I’m more than okay with splurging on myself as well.

😉

Good Shoes Come to Those Who Wait…

…for the prices to drop, that is.

Take, for instance, two shopping trips I went on this weekend.

Kohl’s had sent me a $10 coupon…that I could use off of anything.

Naturally, I headed to the shoe department first.  I found a pair of boots I liked.  They were on the clearance shelf, marked at 80% off.

The Mr. poo-pooed the idea saying, “We only have a week of winter in Florida.”

Whatever.

We walked around the store so I could look at clothes and jewelry, but nothing really struck my fancy, so I left with my coupon in my back pocket.

Well, let me tell you…I WANTED those boots, so I went back after church on Sunday to buy them.

I was shocked to discover a new clearance sticker on the box…

90% off!!!

Conveniently enough, there was another shoe box beside the one I’d been looking at…

HEELS!!!

On sale for 90% off as well!!!!!

Hello, Lord, I know you speak to your people and all, and, well, this was one time I really didn’t mind heeding your instructions.

heehee

I walked out of Kohl’s after spending $1.59.

What a deal!

I’m so glad the Mr. told me not to buy those boots.

I’m even happier that I did my usual thing, ignored him, and went back to get them anyhow.

😉

A Girl’s Just Gotta Shop Sometimes!

Super Sis sent me a Kohl’s gift card for my birthday, so I waited until today, when a coupon I’d gotten in the mail went into effect, before heading out.

I figured that it was the least I could do for myself after working all afternoon on Saturday and turning in a Reading Endorsement assignment after church.

I shopped and shopped and shopped…tried on quite a few things…before settling on these…

Oh, how comfy!!  I love that they’re like sandals but a bit dressed up with the wedge…

What a fun way to show off my newly pedicured toes!

Thanks to the coupon and sales going on, I was going to have a few dollars left over.

Well, I couldn’t just let them sit on that gift card, now could I?

I indulged in a little bit of bling…

I love the “rope” that the pendant hangs from.  This is DEFINITELY my style!

I found a matching pair of earrings that I simply could not pass up…

I was drawn to these pieces because they match one of the blouses I bought the last time I shopped at Kohl’s, and I know they will match some other things I have in my closet.

Besides that, with the 40% off sales plus the 20% coupon, it would have been a crime NOT to buy these!!

heehee

Thanks, Super Sis, for a practical and thoughtful gift!!  I had a lot of fun and will think of you every time I wear one of the items I purchased.

Shoe Therapy

I love shoes.

Anyone who knows me knows this.

I’m cheap, though, and I will wear the heck out of my shoes, refusing to throw them out just because styles change.

It should not have surprised me when I encountered a little problem after school a few days ago…

I had known that the shoes were on their way out.

The clue?

When I was driving and thought I had gum on the bottom of my shoes.  You see, they kept sticking to the pedals.  Turns out that the bottoms had split in half across the soles.

Still, I managed to get a few more days out of them.

Well, upon having them come completely apart, I set them aside.

It was time to go shoe shopping.

Unfortunately, Kohl’s didn’t have much to offer.  Dang.  I even had a 15% coupon.

Today, the Mr. and I headed to Dillards.

I needed a pair of shoes.  It’s getting cold down here in Florida, and I have soccer games to attend.

I tried on four or five pairs of shoes before settling on a pair…

Yes, that’s the German brand.

Are you jealous yet?

Slides…very important to me so I can show off my knitted socks.

It’s going to be sad when I select my attire based on these shoes matching everything, eh?

My feet are happy.

The bank account is not.

The shoes were pricey.

Hopefully, it will be years before they succumb to the fate of the other pair…

How To Fix a Crappy Day

One word…

Folks,

I did not have the best day.

Teaching is like that.  You have good days, and you have bad days.

During the course of a day, you have good moments, and you have bad moments.

If you’re lucky, you are able to string one good moment after another for an entirely great day.

If you’re not lucky, you get the opposite.

Kids are humans.  They have good moments and bad moments, and those moments don’t always line up with the teachers’ moments.

Today’s bad moments took the wind out of my sails, and I went home very down-in-the-dumps.

I still love teaching, mind you.  I was simply having a downer kind of afternoon.

I called my friend, Christina, and I cried on her shoulder.  She’s a wonderful listener.  She’s also very funny, and she cheered me up.

Then I sat on my couch, ready to settle in for the weekend.

Until the Mr. came home and made an announcement:

“I’ve got a coupon, and there’s something I want from Kohl’s.  If you want to go, I’m leaving in a few minutes.”

I don’t know about you, but when I hear “if you want to go,” I know that means that someone is willing to spend money.

I did not hesitate.

Neither did Rooster.

We parted ways as soon as we entered the store.

I bet you know which section I headed to first…

SHOES!!!

Oh.

My.

Word.

Shoes are the bane of my existence.

I.

Simply.

Love.

Them.

Take a gander of what I saw (and tried on)…

Obviously, I am into wedges and all things glittery right now.

Speaking of glittery, I saw the most FABULOUS pair of shoes ever…

This pair reminds me of Dorothy’s red shoes in the Wizard of Oz.  Sure, they are totally impractical, but I did not care.

I.

Wanted.

These.

Shoes.

Look how amazing they looked on my feet…

When the Mr. and Rooster came looking for me, they saw me wandering around with one pink, glittery shoe on.

I did my best to convince the Mr. that owning these shoes would make me a better teacher.

Can you imagine the connections I would make with my female students?  They would ogle my shoes.

They would think I was cool.

The Mr. wasn’t buying it.

In fact, he gave me the same look as last week when I asked him if there was any way we write a sauna off of our taxes as a “business expense” since I do my best lesson planning while in a hot, steamy shower.

Yeah.

You can’t blame a girl for trying.

I left the Mr. and Rooster so that I could find a potty.  All of that shoe shopping was a little too exciting for me.

When I exited, I walked back to the front of the store…taking a different route…one that led me to the clothes section.

Oh boy.

I usually HATE shopping, but something had gotten a hold of me.

I began scooping up clothes to try on.

Before too long, I had quite an armful.

That’s when the Mr. and Rooster caught up with me again.

Rooster sighed.

He has been through this a few times.

Fortunately, there were comfortable padded seats beside the dressing rooms.

I tried on more clothes that I’ve tried on in two or three years combined.

Nearly everything fit, thanks to this healthy diet I’ve been on.  I am able, once again, to comfortably wear the sizes I’ve always been accustomed to wearing.  I felt like my old self as I tried on item after item.

Some things were discarded immediately.

Most things, though, found their way onto the “buy” pile.

Rooster groaned.

He had one shirt and one pair of shoes on his “pile.”

The only problem I had was with the blue jeans.  Being 5’2″ has its drawbacks.

Pants are always too long.

One pair of jeans was only an inch and a half too long, so I told the Mr. that I was sure that buying a pair of high heeled shoes would make the jeans fit perfectly.

😉

We headed back to the shoe department.

We walked around and around.

I moseyed over to those pink shoes.

I sighed wistfully.

An eight-year-old girl lovingly handled “my”shoes.

The Mr. gave me a pointed look.

I told him she had good taste.

I don’t think that’s what his look implied.

I ignored his subliminal message (“If an eight-year-old likes it, that should tell you something.”).

He did not change his mind.

Darn it.

When I win the lottery, I’m totally buying those shoes.

I did find a couple of other pairs I liked, though, and we headed to the register.

I won’t tell you the total.  We did save quite a bit of money when we combined sales with the coupon we had.

I floated on air as we made our way to the car.

Wanna see what I wound up getting?

First, the clothes…

And now, the shoes…

These are the cutest sandals!  They zip up the back (kind of strange, but it works).  They are so comfortable too!

And my other pair of shoes…

I adore these shoes!!  In fact, as I was trying them on, another lady was watching me.  She commented that I had better be careful not to fall.

I didn’t.

I’ve been walking in heels for more than twenty years…

What I love about these shoes is how great they look with blue jeans…

The lady who had watched me try them on liked the way they looked on my feet, and she decided to try them on too.  She wound up buying a pair.  I should have made a hefty commission!

Oh, and did I mention that these shoes were designed by someone famous?

Look at the cute little insignia that I discovered on the sole…

And so my crappy day turned out A-Okay.

I am so grateful that the Mr. took us shopping.  It was the perfect way to end the week!!

Two Things You Do Not Deny a Woman

There are two things a man should never deny a woman…

Chocolate…

And shoes…

Oh, the Mr. knows better than to argue with me when I tell him I MUST have chocolate NOW.

However, the shoe thing…well…hmmm…let’s just say that he tried.

As you’ve probably suspected, we here at Chez AuburnChick seem to think that we have a money tree growing in my otherwise naked back yard, hence our multiple forays into various stores to buy a plethora of items lately.

Of course, I can justify every single item purchased thus far.

I am in serious need of office supplies for my classroom.

I am also trying to ramp up my wardrobe so that I can teach in something other than blue jeans and t-shirts.

Plus, I broke my black flip flops last week while painting.

So, I went on the hunt for new shoes.

A stop at Target did not yield the shoes I desired; however, I hit the jackpot with the following dresses…

Please allow me to pause a few moments to explain a couple of things.

First of all, yes, I am standing on the toilet in which I had the tank replaced last week.  Notice the handle on the side?

And yes, I have become an expert in flushing the new toilet.

Another thing you must notice is that yes, I did take the picture of myself while looking in the mirror.

When Chicky saw the pictures on Facebook, she was mortified.  Apparently, I committed a faux pas by taking a “Mirror Pic,” which is something that ONLY middle school girls do.

She was afraid someone would make fun of me.

Seriously?

She and I then had an argument about me allowing her to take a better picture of me.

She really wanted to do this for me.

I finally agreed…

Chicky did get my head, but you know…the blog and all…

Moving along…

The next day, the Mr. and I were out and about, and we stopped at Kohl’s, one of my favorite stores, where I found these…

They were marked down 50 or 55% off.  Woo Hoo!

BUT…

I saw another pair I wanted as well, and the Mr. emphatically told me no.

I carried them all the way to the register in the hopes that he would change his mind, but he didn’t.

So, I handed the pair to him to return to the shoe department, and I paid for the black pair.

BUT…

Visions of the other shoes danced in my head all night long.

Today, after church, I told the Mr. that I was going back to get them.

He started to object until I told him that I would be using the money he “paid” me a few weeks ago when I mowed the yard.

Oh joy, oh joy when I finally got them on my feet…

Aren’t they pretty?

Chicky says I have a thing for dangly stuff.

Yeah, I know.  I just can’t help it!

BUT…there’s more to this story…

When I went back and found the shoes from the day before, I saw another pair that begged to be tried on.

That is when I entered the danger zone.

I knew I shouldn’t get another pair…especially given the strong “no” I had received the day before.

BUT…

I wasn’t about to be denied…again…

And so I got them…

The brand is MUDD, and oh my gosh, but they are so comfortable!!

I am hoping that the wedge heel play nice with my foot and the arch issues I’ve been having the last few weeks, and the height will enable me to wear a longer pair of black pants that I own…

Did I mention that they were on sale for $23.99…marked down from $49.99?

Chocolate and shoes…all in the same week.

I am a happy girl indeed.
