Perdita – Bluebell – A Knitted Bracelet

Last week, I officially joined the Harry Potter Knitting & Crochet House Cup on Ravelry.

Participants are sorted into houses, and monthly assignments are posted.  Participants are only required to complete one “class” per month but can complete more.  Points are awarded, and the house with the most points wins.

There is a lot of socializing as well as a lot of inspiration as projects are oohed and ahhed over.

I’ve jumped right on in, excited to have finally found a forum comprised of nice people.  Many welcomed me immediately, and I felt loved.

Anyhoo…enough about the mushy stuff.

I wanted to share one of the four projects I’ve completed in the last week.  Yes, vacation has been so good to me.  Sleep in, do a few household chores, nap, eat dinner, and knit.  I’ll enjoy this while I can!

Here’s the project.

It’s called Perdita.  This pattern, free on Knitty, actually consists of three patterns for three different bracelets.

I made Bluebell.

I used Artiste DMC Cotton Pearl.  The colorway is #790196.  It’s a light blue…very pretty.

I used size 0 needles and made the XS size.  I should have made the small though, which only adds one more repeat.

I bought the beads at Hobby Lobby.  It’s the Chocolate/Blue mixture.  I used a .75mm crochet hook to string the beads as I knit.  I did not string them all beforehand.  This link explains how to add beads to a project.

The pattern was super-easy.  I easily knit it in one evening…during a movie that Chicky and I sat down to watch together.

I’m so happy that I’ve been practicing my crocheting skills, because I was able to SC around one end and chain the button loops.  I wound up adding an extra button because there was a large gap between the two I originally put on.  The extra repeat would have prevented this gap.  Hindsight.  All worked out in the end.

The buttons are actually brown, not orange.

I absolutely love this little bracelet and will probably make more in different colors!

Knitted Baby Capris, Kitten Hat, and Bonnet

Now, before you start wondering why I’m knitting baby items, let me just tell you that Chicky has a friend from high school who recently started her own photography business.  She asked me to knit up a few baby items to photograph her clients in.  She showed me a picture of something she wanted to use in her studio, and together we selected a couple of patterns that fit the bill.

We met at Hobby Lobby, and I gave her a crash course on yarns…especially their weight.

She purchased a few skeins, and off I went.

Here’s what I made. Specific pattern notes can be found on my Ravelry project pages.

First off is a pair of newborn capris and kitten hat to match.

The pattern can be purchased here.

This is the kitten hat that I made. The pattern was included with the one for the capris (which also had instructions for making shorts, capris, long pants, and longer pants)…

Amber, my daughter’s friend, wanted a second pair of capris from a different skein of yarn.

I purled the last row of the legs and bound off purlwise as suggested in the pattern (I didn’t do this with the first pair). I like the results much better!

I bought the designer’s pattern for a newborn baby bonnet. Amber wanted tassels, and this pattern had them.

Both brands of yarn were FABULOUS to work with!

The pattern designer was also a gem and got back with me quickly when I sent her a question.

These were super fast knits, with the patterns so easy to follow!  I highly recommend this designer!

It was fun to knit up these small items, and I can’t wait to see pictures of Amber’s clients all dressed up in the finery that came off of my needles!

My BFF

Alert the media.

I have finished another knitting project!!!

This probably won’t surprise you, but I went for my favorite type of pattern…SOCKS!

This pattern is BFF, by Cookie A.  Yes, I am predictable, am I not?

The pattern can be found in her book Knit. Sock. Love.

For this pattern, I selected a skein of yarn I purchased in Seattle during my cruise to Alaska two years ago (props to the in-laws for funding that trip!).

The yarn is Happy Feet (total of 80 grams), and it was a joy to knit, frog, and re-knit with.

😀

I cast on June 2nd and plugged along just wonderfully…

…Until I turned the heel and tried on the first sock.

Ugh.

Too big!

Rats.  The sock was ridiculously big, so I frogged (ripped up the entire thing)…

I cast on again, going down to a size 0 needle.  I also switched from the Small sock to the XS.  There’s a cable in this pattern, and cables tend to stretch.

With those changes made, I began knitting again and knit the entire leg in one day.  I was on a mission to get this pair finished!

You can see that the fit was much, much better the second time around!

It wasn’t long before I was working the foot.

I love the evenness of the stitches!

It wasn’t long before I was casting on Sock #2.

I got a big head, though, and had to frog this sock after I finished the leg section.  Right before I began working on the heel flap, I discovered that I’d been doing the cable pattern on the wrong round!  Ugh!!

I got back in the groove, paid very close attention to every detail in the pattern, put on a movie (Snow White and the Swordsman…great movie!!), and finished the sock around 2am Tuesday morning…

Here are the photos of the finished pair!  Please forgive the lighting.  I have discovered that the afternoon light is the best when photographing my knitted items.  I got antsy and couldn’t wait!

Love of Knitting eBook – A Review

A couple of days ago, I received an email from my friend, Rebecca, asking if I was interested in reviewing an eBook for the Love of Knitting website.

I contacted Eric, the guy who had originally emailed her, and he responded quickly, attaching the eBook to his message.  He also granted me permission to use any photographs from the book.  Yay!

The title of the eBook is Learn to Knit Lace.  You can find the free eBook here.

You know me and lace.  We go together like peanut butter and chocolate in a Reese’s Cup.

The eBook contains pattern instructions for three projects.

The Cielo Shell is an adorable sleeveless knit top that has stockinette stitching across the top third and a beautiful diamond lace pattern across the bottom portion.

Although I’ve never knit a “real” sweater, the instructions seem clear.  The schematics provide the measurements needed to fit this top properly.

The second project in this eBook is the Espalier Wrap…

This pattern combines cables and easy lacework to make what looks to be a warm wrap.  The leaf edging is a beautiful touch.  Surprisingly, this project is worked back and forth, knitting through three charts simultaneously.  I’ve never seen a pattern worked this way before, but I’ve gotta say that it sure beats picking up stitches or grafting a border on at the end!  I will DEFINITELY be making this!

The last project in the eBook is a Lace Linen Trim…

This is a simple lace pattern that would add a fancy touch to any room!

I’ve got to say that I am very impressed with this little eBook.  The steps are written out as well as charted, so regardless of your preference, you have no excuse not to give these patterns a go.  The pictures serve as great visual references if you’re not sure what a pattern is supposed to look like.

The website, LoveofKnitting.com, where this eBook is located has many, many free patterns and other eBooks as well.  I’ve bookmarked it for future reference and look forward to perusing it frequently.

Omelet Shawl – Revealed!

Alright.

Since I teased you a bit with my post of two days ago, it’s finally time for the great reveal.

What, exactly, was I blocking?

It was, in fact, the Omelet Shawl, a beautiful design created by Joyce Fassbender.

I used Malabrigo Lace yarn and size 3 (3.25mm) needles.  I cast on June 10, 2012 and finished June 1, 2013.  It should not have taken me nearly a year, but as you know, teaching consumes my life from August to May.  Trying to complete my Reading Endorsement, Fred Jones, and other professional development series left me with very little time to knit.  The winding down of school (and the prospect of a knitalong with my friend, Christina) were the final motivation I needed to finish strong.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the pictures.  I took them myself…using the self-timer on my camera and my tripod.  It was a really fun photo session!

Pre-blocking. This is why we block…to open up the stitches to reveal the beautiful pattern!

Blocking was surprisingly easy!

I plan on wearing this to school on Wednesday…our final day!  I’ll pair it with a blue dress.  I think it will be divine!

BFF – A New Sock Project

My friend, Christina, and I are going to do a sweater KAL this summer.  I knit a gauge swatch yesterday and hung it up to dry.

Meanwhile, my idle fingers were itching to cast on my favorite type of project…

SOCKS!

If you’ve read my blog for a couple of years, you’ll know that I LOVE making socks!!!!!

I’m especially in awe of Cookie A’s patterns.

Sock yarn is something I have plenty of.  One could say that I’m addicted to it.

We all have our weaknesses!

😉

I perused my sock yarn stash first and finally settled on this…

The yarn is Happy Feet.  It’s a beautiful brownish/red color…perfect for fall!  I think it will pair nicely with the sweater I’m going to be making.

After seeing BFF on a Ravelry search earlier in the day, I pulled out the book, which I happened to test knit for…

Then, I happily cast on.  I completed the cuff and one pattern repeat before being seized with stomach fits…

The picture only shows some of the ribbing…not the pattern repeat.

I really shouldn’t have eaten garlic stuffed olives…as the second food introduced into my stomach after finishing my juice fast.

<insert sheepish grin>

Can you tell I’m in my happy place?

It will be even happier once Friday is over, and I’m really home for the summer!

Sneak Peek

Someone may have finished a project she’s been working on since last summer.

Here’s a sneak peek…

You’ll have to wait a couple of days before seeing the rest!

A Birthday Celebration

Today I turn 43.

Happy Birthday to me!

I started celebrating a little early…as in yesterday.

I’d carefully planned out my week, working many, many hours so that I could enjoy the rest of my week.

Every year, about this time, I make an hour and a half trek to a yarn store that has been one of my favorites over the years.  The night before, I texted my friend, Maegan, to see if she wanted to join me.  She did, and I picked her up around 11.

Maegan and I work together, but we don’t get to talk for long periods of time because we are too busy teaching our students.  She won our school’s Teacher of the Year…a testament to how fabulous she is.  The kids and staff adore her.  Spending quality time away from school and the stresses of life was something I knew I’d treasure.

Off we went!

She took a couple of pictures as we crossed the bridge.  As you can see, the weather was PERFECT!

Our first stop was the yarn store…actually the FIRST of the day (we saw the other one I used to visit on the way and made plans to stop on our way back).

Maegan was probably the most patient non-knitting person I’ve ever gone yarn shopping with.  She was mesmerized by the samples that had been worked up.  She pet the various skeins of yarn and listened patiently as I explained things like marrying the right yarns and patterns together.

What a friend!

I took full advantage of the 20% birthday coupon that I had received in the mail and left with these in my bag…

Malabrigo Lace in Indigo

A girl can never have too much Malabrigo!  I see this becoming a shawl…one day.

This is a sock yarn I’ve never heard of.  When I touched it, I could not stop.  It begged to come home with me.  I hate to let a yarn’s cries go untended.

😀

The yarn store is in the cutest little tourist area, fraught with adorable shops.

We visited a cupcake bakery that was uber-homey inside…

Alas…I inquired about vegan cupcakes, and the gal responded in the negative.  Oh well.  I guess I saved myself a few calories.

We also stepped into a pet supply store that has unique home-baked furry baby treats.  I didn’t take any photos.  I didn’t buy a thing either!  Go me!

Another shop that caught Maegan’s attention was a vintage clothing store.

The place had a funky smell, but we still had a good time holding up “interesting” items.

I found myself a dress to wear on Monday nights when I watch Dancing With the Stars

No, I didn’t really buy it, but the thought did cross my mind!

Next up was a trip to Goodwill.

Yes, that’s right.

Goodwill.

Maegan had almost had heart failure when she’d seen one on the way to the yarn store.  At first, I was a little worried…until she told me that she LOVES to shop at Goodwill and had not been to the one we’d just passed.  I had promised that we’d go back, so we did.

Confession time.

Although I’ve donated things to Goodwill, I’ve never actually shopped there.

Oh word, but Maegan was in her element, and she quickly brought me up to speed on the ins and outs of shopping there.

We found a beautiful white prom dress and considered buying it just in case one of our students couldn’t afford the cost.  In the end, we decided not to because the dress was a little too sheer, and we didn’t think any of our girls would actually wear it.

After shopping awhile, we left without buying anything.

It was time to find the other yarn store, where I purchased the following yarn…

This is a cotton blend, and there was a sample of the Chincoteague Shawl knit up with a different colorway.  It’s a beautiful shawl, and the yarn stripes out beautifully as well.  I can’t wait to cast on!

After spending nearly an hour in the shop, we headed in the direction of home…or should I say in the direction of a second Goodwill store…one in which the owner of the second yarn store had assured us was a much better Goodwill to shop at.

Oh word.

Was.

It.

Ever.

It certainly didn’t take me long to catch on to Goodwill shopping!

As we shopped, I couldn’t believe that we actually needed a buggy!

Maegan taught me how to look at the shoes and determine if they’d been worn much.

We had fun trying on shoes.  She actually had to help me figure out how to strap on one pair…

Yes, I am THAT girl…still so awkward at times.

The shoes were a great fit and oh so pretty!

I found another cute pair as well.  Both pairs will look great under jeans or dress pants.

Another thing I discovered at Goodwill…

The kids love the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson, and my friend, Barb, said that Rules of Attraction is one of the most sought-after books at school.  I bought the Nicholas Sparks book just because it was the first book that made me cry when I read it years ago.

I’ll admit that the “savings” added up, and I wound up spending a bit more than I’d anticipated.  Oh well.  Sometimes you just can’t put a price on the value of reading!

Next on our to-do list was a stop at Ulta.  We both had coupons we’d received in the mail, and we were eager to spend save a buck!  I wound up buying four bottles of Ulta Shampoo/Conditioner, which actually works great on my hair and was on sale for buy one, get one half off.

By the time I arrived home, I was happy and a little tired.  It took a second trip to the car to bring in everything…

What a wonderful way to kick off my birthday weekend.  Spending time with Maegan rejuvenated me.  We bounced teaching ideas off of one another, gave each other validation, and grew closer as friends.

I adore this young woman and am so blessed that I could share my birthday-eve with her.

Please say a prayer for my Chicklets.  They are on their way home, spending my birthday weekend/Easter with us and bringing with them a few friends.

The house will be filled with lots of laughter and fun, and I cannot wait.

Could you also say a prayer for Aubie.  She’s had a bad couple of days.  We’re very nervous.  Her health condition is the one sad spot right now.

Thanks all!

Our Group is Infamous!

As many of you know, I am a knitter.

One of my students asked me to teach her to knit earlier in the year, and word spread.

I’ve got an informal knitting group that meets in my classroom during lunch.

There are the regulars, and there are students who pop in every now and then.

My door is always open (unless I’m taking a potty break, in which another student is left in charge).

The girls come in, sit down, eat (shhh…they’re not supposed to, but it happens unawares sometimes).

Sometimes they knit.

Often they chit chat.

It is through my little lunch meetings that I discovered that one of my girls wasn’t eating.

This issue has been corrected.

It is through this group that I learned that one of girls’ mamas is a truck driver who is rarely home (she lives with her grandmother and auntie).  This knowledge helped me understand why she broke down in tears in the middle of class one day.  She’d observed me asking motherly questions to another student, and it made her ache for her own mom.

One of my girls brought in a young man who passed the ACT this year (I’d taught him last year) and, thus, fulfilled an important graduation requirement.

We did the happy dance together.

It’s a special group that is gaining notoriety, and not just at school.

One of my new KH friends, Roux (aka “knitAbikini”) sent me knitting needles for my group.  She also included questionnaires for my girls.  We’d “talked” through KH messaging about her blogging about us.  We didn’t share students’ names, and she promised to keep my location TOP SECRET.

My girls responded, and I mailed the questionnaires back.

Well, Roux sent me a message yesterday to let me know that she had written the first of several posts about my group.

Click THIS link to read it.

I’ll wait.

:::foot tapping patiently:::

Done?

Back to my story…

As I read, I was so touched.

She shared my original plea for help.

She shared her funny comments.

She then shared one of my girl’s responses to the questions.

Oh.

Wow.

This is something I will treasure as long as I live.

It’s one thing to experience my group first-hand.

They are lovely girls.

It’s another to read about us on the internet.

Roux, thank you so much for what you’re doing for us.

Not only are you bringing smiles to the faces of my girls, but you are providing that extra burst of energy that I desperately need right now as I hit the most arduous part of the school year in anticipation of high stakes testing.

You are a gem!

2013 – Goal Oriented

Last night, while watching one of the Bowl games, I was struck by a commentary one of the analysts made about one of the football players.  Forgive me for not remembering specific details such as the player’s name and team he played for.

Those things aren’t what’s important in this post.  What is important, however, is the lesson of the commentary.

The analyst relayed the story of how this particular football player had heard a speaker lecture while the player was in middle school.  One of the things the speaker had the students do was to write down one goal they had for that year.

The now-player did so and accomplished his goal, whatever that was.

He continued writing his goals and accomplished every one of them as he progressed through school.

Even while in college, this young man has written down his goals…before every season.  He is proof that setting goals is the key to achieving success.

This commentary inspired me.

I am not one to make New Year’s resolutions.  I’ve never really kept the ones I’ve made.

However, I like the idea of setting goals.

Perhaps it’s just semantics, eh?  You say po-TA-to, and I say po-TAH-to.

😉

Either way, I am a task-oriented kind of gal.  I derive much pleasure from finished products.

Thus, I’m creating a list of goals for myself.

Career

  • Finish Reading Endorsement (anticipated finish date is Fall 2013)
  • Finish three ESOL classes (hopefully the FLDOE will not require me to complete the full 300-hour coursework since I’ll have my Reading Endorsement soon)
  • Keep my lesson plans SIMPLE…don’t overthink so much!

Personal

  • Take time each day to maintain some semblance of cleanliness in my home, whether it’s scooping poop from the back yard, vacuuming dog hair, or cleaning the shower
  • Allot time each day to just “be” without thinking about work
  • Stay away from my tweezers unless I have a splinter (I get a bit tweezer happy…it’s a habit I am determined to break!)
  • Listen more
  • Talk less…or at least less about MYSELF!
  • Stop visiting Starbucks
  • Buy one toy or some other type of “gift” once per month…saving these items to donate next Christmas

Spiritual

  • Spend time in God’s Word to reconnect with the One who I owe EVERYTHING to
  • Be more purposeful about getting up and worshiping on Sunday mornings

Yarn-Related

  • Knit at least ten minutes four or five days per week
  • Finish knitting the Omelet Shawl I began last summer
  • Participate in a sweater knit-a-long (KAL) with my friend, Christina, and knit my first pullover sweater!
  • Learn to crochet

My hope is that by writing these things down, I’ll be able to revisit this list, refocus when my priorities get out of whack, and live life more purposefully.

Happy New Year to all of you!
