Ok…so most of us hate getting bills, right? Of course we do. However, some bills are a necessary evil…the electric bill, the water bill…you get what I’m saying.
I’ve signed up for e-bill with several companies, and I received my electric bill via email today. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw it.
$87.89
Yes, folks, you read that right.
Two months ago, my bill was $177 plus change. Last month, the bill went down to $122. Do you remember how I had been experimenting with hanging clothes on clotheslines in my garage? If you missed the post, click here.
I’ve gotta tell you that hanging clothes to dry is a lot of work! It also requires planning. After we saw the electric bill drop the first time, it was hard for Mr. AuburnChick to deny my request for a third line. We know how much room we need to park the cars in the garage, and we could fit in one more line.
The other things we’ve been doing seem to be helping as well. We’ve turned off the air conditioner. It had been set on 80 during the day and 78 at night. Yeah, I know, I like to torture people. It really wasn’t as bad as it seemed. Of course, I’m cold-natured, so I wouldn’t exactly be the best person to say.
We also limit the time we spend in the shower so we don’t use up all of the hot water. We have the hot water heater on a timer, and I recently wrapped an insulation blanket around the water heater. THAT was no fun at all. If you ever do this, wear gloves and clothes you don’t care anything about. The fiberglass got in my skin and hair and covered my clothes. Not good stuff, I tell you. But, it keeps the water inside the tank heated for longer.
I also had blinds installed in my house, and now that it’s cold, we’ll leave them open during the day to warm up the place. While it was hot, we left them closed. We could tell a difference immediately, and the air conditioner came on less frequently.
So, those are the changes I’ve made. They’re not big changes, but they’ve resulted in reducing my bill almost $100. That’s totally worth the effort.
