Monday

Because I’m trying really hard not to fall off the blogging train, I’m going to post something quick before the clock strikes midnight.

Today was a good day.

I had plans.

For an introverted teacher who spends ten months surrounded by lots and lots of people and two months shut away from the world, this is huge.

I got up early…for a summer day…and did my workout.

I started my second round of Hammer and Chisel last week.  I really need to blog about round 1.  I’ll get to that as soon as the Mr. takes my measurements.

Anyhoo, this morning, I added in an ab workout that’s not part of this program but one that I saw that Beachbody had tweeted out about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYcrMejXlw8

Y’all…the first move.  Oh my golly.  It was brutal.  The bug move was fun, and the last move…totally had me smiling, in an ab torture kind of way.

Then, I jumped in the shower and got ready to head out.

I was on my way to meet a new-to-my-school reading teacher.  Along the way, I stopped at Fresh Market to hunt for brown rice syrup, an ingredient I need for a recipe I want to try.  I didn’t find it, so I moseyed on over to Ulta and catered to my inner diva with the purchase of a few bottles of nail polish.

Ahem.

Then, I met my now-new friend, J, at one of my favorite places to eat.

I asked for a certain seat, and here was my view…

Go ahead and be jealous.

J is just adorable, and I quickly took a liking to her.  We are going to have a lot of fun this year, and I know I’m going to learn a lot from her.

After we finished, I met her at our school and walked her around.  She got to see her new classroom, which she ogled over, and I gave her the low-down on teacher attire (no uniform for us!) and other things.  Then, we parted ways with her hugging me before she left!  Total sweetheart.  I can say this because I’m almost twice her age.  😛

I ran a few other errands, met up with Rooster’s girl, who came to the house to get some paperwork and then run more errands with me, and finished out my day with a bit of Food Network Star on the DVR and my current book, The Testing.

I am loving my lazy summer days.  They make up for the harried pace I run the rest of the year.

Weekend of Fun

A week and a half ago, I did something I rarely do…

I took two days off of work – a Friday and a Monday.

Why?

Well, to play, of course!

The Mr.’s work schedule was chaotic this summer; coordinating a weekend trip around his and Rooster’s schedules proved un-doable.

Thus it was that we found ourselves at Universal Studios the second week of school.  We stayed at the Cabana Beach Resort, where the Mr. had reserved a family suite…tres beautiful.  ❤

Chicky doesn’t live too far from Orlando, so she drove over and met us there Saturday morning…just in time to go to the parks!  We had tickets for both – Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios.

Oh goodness, but just seeing Chicky made me happy.  She was last in town in June for a friend’s wedding.  Our visit was somewhat short; she’s a homebody…as in her own home…because she’s all grown up now.  😉

Watching my babies (cause they’ll always be my babies) walking together, conversing about who knows what, made my heart sing with joy.

The first day started out beautiful. We quickly got on The Hulk.  I wasn’t scared until we were seated.  I remembered doing well during Spring Break when the Mr. and I rode it, but I also remember feeling just a little bit queasy when it was over because of the final twist.

This time around, I was better prepared for the flips and turns and got off the ride smiling.

Our day turned, eventually, as the weather changed from being sunny to a dull overcast…typical Florida summer weather.  The rain drove us back to the hotel after dinner at the Cowfish (a great restaurant at CityWalk, if you’re ever at Universal).

That night, we were checking out the weather for the next day, and it was supposed to rain…like an 80% chance…EVERY.  SINGLE.  HOUR.

Well, I prayed mightily before I went to sleep, claiming God’s promise that we could move mountains if we had faith.  I asked that God would allow our little part of Orlando to be rain-free until we finished all of the rides we wanted to go on.  It’s so rare that all four of us can get together, that I wanted to eke out as much fun from the day as possible.

God was so faithful and answered my prayers!  The day started off a bit hazy, but the sky quickly cleared up.

We got into Harry Potter World early because we were staying at one of the park’s hotels.  Boy, did we take advantage of this extra time!  We quickly jumped on the Dueling Dragons ride.  We’d ridden it the day before, but because there are two different tracks, we got on the second one.  The Mr. wasn’t super thrilled; roller coasters are getting harder for him to ride.

😀

What fun!

After that ride, we walked quickly back to the Rock It roller coaster, which we’d tried to ride the day before but couldn’t because it had gotten shut down with the inclement weather.

The Mr., who was going to pass on it the day before, got shamed into riding with us.  It was the main ride that Rooster wanted to go on.  As we waited in line, we discovered that rather than having an over-the-shoulder harness, the ride had a thick waist shield.

I’ll admit that I got a little freaked out.  This ride requires you to go straight up really high, so you’re looking up at the sky before you get to the top of a dropoff.  SCARY.  It flips and twists too!  We were so scared we’d fall out.

I sat beside Rooster, and Chicky and the Mr. sat behind us.

I screamed the first two drops but then began laughing hysterically when I thought I heard the Mr. screaming.  It was, in fact, the man in front of us.

Still, I found the ride exhilarating.

After we got off, we discovered that the ride had cameras in front of every seat, so we could watch ourselves as we were riding.

Oh.

My.

Gosh.

I wish I had bought the video of the Mr. and Chicky; the contrast in their faces was PRICELESS.  Chicky smiled and laughed the entire time.  The Mr.’s face was screwed up like he was enduring torture.  Hysterical stuff.

This was me after I finished…the ride behind me (see the arrows…you go up the left side of them…on your back)…

We managed to everything we wanted to do…the Minions ride…so much fun!!  The Mr. and I had waited for an hour and a half before it got shut down during our previous visit, so we were especially happy to finally get to ride it.

We visited Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley and indulged in beverages…

That was a creamy orange drink with cinnamon and brown sugar around the rim.  Oh.  My.  Gosh.  I was licking my fingers for hours afterward.

One of the main things I wanted to do was go on the water rides.  We’d purchased ponchos because I had forgotten to bring mine after loaning them to my friend, Barb, a few months ago.  Thank goodness we had them because the water rides SOAK you through and through!  What fun though!  I highly recommend them if you ever visit Universal.

This was me after the Barges ride.

I didn’t really buy much in the way of souvenirs.  I did get this comic shirt though…so cute and so much fun to wear!

I liked it so much that I wore it to dinner that night.  I did a sneak-selfie as we walked to the Hard Rock Cafe at CityWalk…

Oh, and the rain that I asked God to keep at bay?  He answered!!!  It didn’t start raining until after we’d gotten off of the last ride we’d planned for the day.  Then, the bottom fell out of the sky…as we began making our way to the bus and, ultimately, our hotel.

Don’t ever NOT ask for something.  God does hear!

Chicky didn’t join us for dinner.  She had gone back home so she could teach the next day.  Her school was only starting its second week, so she didn’t want to take off time.

The food at the Hard Rock was divine…

I don’t remember what the guys ate; I had the veggie sandwich.  Rooster enjoyed the cheesecake while the Mr. and I inhaled its delicious aroma from afar.

Sigh.

What a fantastic weekend we had.  We created so many fun memories…even more precious now that my chicklets are grown and spending less and less time with us.

Vacation Shenanigans – Part 3

Our second official day on the ship found us at Grand Turk.

It’s a small island with a beautiful view.

If you ever visit Grand Turk, do not waste money on a cab tour.  It’s not worth it because there’s not much to see.  Just enjoy the beach!

Immediately upon settling in, Super Sis and I were approached by a lady offering to put braids or wraps in our hair.

We had decided that we wanted to do this, but we didn’t want to spend much money.  Everything on the islands is negotiable…this we knew from our past traveling experiences, so we began to haggle.

The Mr. had agreed to spend $20 on our wraps.  I was going to pay for hers, and she would pay me back later.

We finally got the gal down from her original price, and another girl began making the wrap…

I had chosen blues and greens because they are my favorite colors…

Super Sis got her hair done after mine was finished, and we then sat, contented, while we chatted and the boys threw a Nerf football.

The weather was absolutely divine and much appreciated after some cold temps we’d back home!  The water at Grand Turk was a gorgeous shade of blue.

After a teensy bit of shopping, I needed a bottle of water, so I headed for the bar in the pool area of the resort that is on the island.  What a lovely setting, eh?

Can you say Cabana Boy?  🙂

We eventually headed back to the ship where we enjoyed a round of trivia…our daily dose of fun.

A word about trivia.

We take it very seriously.  It’s boys vs girls.

The boys think they are smarter than we are…not that previous scores would indicate this.

:::rolling my eyes:::

Take a moment to admire my cleverly-added hats to hide the boys’ faces.  Go me.  🙂

Here’s our scorecard…please take notice of our name…because we are still have some ripening to do…

Take a look at how the boys…aka “The Lighbulbs” – gag – did…

They claimed it wasn’t a real victory for us because we gained a new partner…Eddie…a kind older gentleman who didn’t belong to a group.  We, being the friendly Southern women that we are, welcomed him with open arms.  He was our secret weapon and brought a smile to our faces each day he met with us.

After trivia, it was time to get ready for dinner.  The ship had pulled away from Grand Turk, taking to the high seas on its way to Puerto Rico…

I couldn’t help but take some time to enjoy the sunset.  If you’ve never cruised, you must.  The sight of the sun setting over the ocean is awe-inspiring and such a reminder of God’s beauty…

The day of fun wasn’t over though.  You see, cruise lines have tons and tons of activities planned.  Pick and choose according to your preference!

After dinner, we headed to the auditorium/theater for a special show…

I don’t even know what to say about this group.  It was on America’s Got Talent, and I remember watching the guys.  Seeing them in person was something else altogether.

The show was interactive with audience members picking out various pots and pans, along with ear plugs, so we could drum out a beat along with the talented artists.

Each member of the group brought his own unique flair to the performance…

What I loved about this act was the way the routines were changed up.  There was body percussion…

There were percussion duets…

There was some sort of chain saw fireworks thing going (freaked me out a bit…didn’t want anything to catch fire)…

One of funniest acts was the dueling drummers.  Oh word, but these guys were hysterical!!!!

During one part of the set, one of the percussionists got the older lady you see pictured in the bottom left to throw in a drum stick.  The poor woman’s aim was horrid, so he tried to walk her through how to properly throw a drumstick.  Her timing was off…she didn’t speak much English, I think…which made for a lot of laughter as the musician ad-libbed.

The absolute best part of the show happened when the group asked for volunteers, previously selected, to come to the stage.

The Mr. had been selected.

The men had to put on masks, and the audience was shown the following message on the mounted monitors…

We were in for a treat.

It was a training zoo.

Fortunately, the Mr. wasn’t the one who couldn’t see.  The poor guy in the middle (the one with both hands down) was the unlucky fellow.

If you want a good laugh for the day, check out this video…

http://youtu.be/rdTisyKjhYA

The Mr. is wearing the purple shirt and blue jeans.

Please note that he doesn’t usually dance in public…nor does he slow dance with other men.

Ahem.

The booty song…he’s practiced those moves at home for the family a few times…as a joke.

He got some of the loudest applause.

He did us proud.

After the guys did their thing, it was time for a cookie break…

Yes, the guys doled out cookies.  So generous of them…especially after a very filling dinner, which nearly every audience member had just emerged from…

Then, it was time for a PSA about bullying.  The group has created an anti-bullying campaign with proceeds from the sales of their merchandise on the ship going toward their nonprofit organization, Legacy X.

After one final hodgepodge of classic rock and roll songs, the group finished its performance.  Group members met members of the audience outside.  They were very friendly and more than willing to pose for pictures.  I was too shy to ask (if they had been my favorite YA authors, I would have totally gone fangirl on them).

After the show, we hit the karaoke scene and listened to my talented nephew, Music Man, belt out a couple of tunes.  This guy is amazing and had the audience cheering loudly.

Later, he and Chicky saved me from embarrassing myself when the host of the evening tagged my girl and me to do a duet.  I know I cannot carry a tune, so it would have been disastrous.  Music Man filled in for me, and he and Chicky sang “You’re the One that I Want,” from Grease.  It was hysterical!  Music Man tried, accidentally, to sing Chicky’s part, to which she waved him off.  They giggled through the entire thing but still had the crowd into it.  They were acknowledged throughout the rest of the cruise by people who had seen them.  Very funny.

I can’t remember if we hit the late night buffet after that.  All I know is that we were pretty tired.  The sun, the music fun, the dancing…they were a lot to take in for just one day, and we knew Puerto Rico was just over the horizon…

Vacation Shenanigans – Part 2

We are the family that likes to be as close to the front of the line as possible.  This translates to checking out of the hotel early to drive to Port Everglades.

I didn’t mind though, as evidenced by my smile…

We stopped at a Walgreens on the way, picking up last-minute items.  We bought our youngest nephew a Nerf ball to throw around.  We are awesome that way.

Poor Walgreens.  Store employees were probably glad to see our large group of ten pay and depart.

We kept on driving, went through the security checkpoint at the port, and pulled up to the terminal.  It was exciting to see our ship come into view…

We filled out the required health forms, assuring the Powers-That-Be that we weren’t sick with the flu or some other stomach ailment.

Then we waited.

I got in trouble when I pulled out my camera…an early Christmas present from the Mr….and started taking pictures.

By the way, that’s my first SLR camera!  I have much to learn.

Anyhoo, apparently there’s some sort of rule that you’re not supposed to take pictures inside the waiting area.  There were no signs posted…only a rude employee who persisted in giving me the stank eye across the room.

Whatever.

We only had to wait about an hour before we boarded.

This was the cleanest our room would be the entire trip.  Imagine four people’s stuff in there!!

I stepped out on the balcony and got a better look at the Intercoastal…

After eating lunch, we walked around the ship to get our bearings.

Super Sis giggled as she took the following picture…

Folks, we were STILL IN PORT and that man behind me was in his skivvies.

Ahem.

Later, everyone headed to our rooms so we could watch as we left port.  The weather was divine…humid but still warmer from where we’d left the day before.

Dinner that night was delicious.  Sorbet, a milk-free option, was on the menu, so the Mr. and I were happy!

We went to the show in the big theater that night.  It was a preview of the different acts we would be seeing that week.  We eventually hit the hay.  The next day, we would be at sea, en route to Puerto Rico.

Vacation Shenanigans

Dear Blog,

I realize I’ve been absent of late.

Blame it on work.

Blame it on fatigue.

Actually, blame it mainly on the trip the AuburnChick family took the week of Thanksgiving.

You see, the Grand Poobas of the family are a generous couple who enjoy getting their loved ones together, in one place, whenever possible.

As you know from past posts, our adventures often find us cruising on the high seas.

This Thanksgiving, we were blessed to return to Grand Turk, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and Holland America’s private island, Half Moon Cay.

I’ll spend the next few posts sharing photos and memories from the trip.

Let’s begin with the day we left.

We had to travel nearly the entire length of the state to get to the port in Ft. Lauderdale.  Of course, getting to the point of driving down was first met with packing…lots of it.

A girl can never pack enough, don’t you know.  What a tragedy it would be to not have the perfect outfit for a particular outing or activity.

Haters be hatin’ my organized, think-ahead brain.

😀

Getting up that Saturday to make the long drive to Ft. Lauderdale was easy…seeing this on my phone app made me smile…

For nine blessed days, my little family of four would once again be together.  We had not seen Chicky since early June and could not wait to reunite with her.  We stopped a few hours into our trip to pick her up.  A friend had driven her to a place not too far from the interstate.

Girl in-tow, we continued to make our way to the hotel, a few hours away.  We met up with the other part of the family, ate dinner and watched football on the big screens, and called it a night.  We probably had at least fifteen alarms set among all of us…all in the effort to not oversleep so we could board early.

Come back for my next post where I’ll share photos and thoughts from Sunday, our first afternoon/evening on the ship.

What Teachers Do During the Summer

If you don’t work in education, you may wonder what teachers do during the summer.

Well…there’s this…

Which has followed this…

A ten-week course completed in THREE days, thank you very much! (Click to see a larger photo.)

Which is followed by this…

And then some of this (teachers are the masters of organization)…

It was time to go through the bowls and match up lids and/or throw away anything extra.

Oh, and let’s not forget this…frequent naps between projects…

How about some cooking?

Daniel Fast Black Bean Soup – So delicious!!!!

Oh…and this too…

Followed, of course, by this…

To be sure, there will be lesson planning, reading, and the creation of new and improved forms to make the next school year run more efficiently; however, for Your’s Truly, there are more household projects to complete, more self-indulgences to be had…more rest to get caught up on.

Sleeping Beauty

I should be using this time to get ahead on lesson plans.

I could be cleaning my house.

Instead, I find myself doing a lot of the following…

20121230-195952.jpg

Now that we’re home and settled in, I’ve found myself sleeping in late and only changing my clothes after showering late in the day.

I’ve also succumbed to nap attacks.

To my credit, I’ve been thinking about the first big lesson plan I have to write for my Reading Endorsement class. I have three biggies to write, and they are the culmination of the entire coursework I’ve been making my way through for my reading certification. The hardest part is coming up with an idea for phonemic awareness. How in the heck do you teach that to high schoolers? I’m confident that God will help me come up with an answer to this life-changing question, eh? LOL

My goal is to get, at minimum, one lesson plan finished. I’m going to go for two, leaving only one to complete after we start back at school.

Hence the sleep…my bit of escape from reality while allowing my brain to ruminate on the plans I need to write.

I’m seeing music somewhere in the lesson.

I’m also seeing more power naps during my final week of Christmas vacation.

Day 9 – The Return Home

Well, Day 9 was bittersweet.

It was time to return home.

We headed back to the airport which, by the way, had a fabulous book store and lots of places to eat.

I was more interested in finding Kleenex because I had picked up a cold the last couple of days on the cruise, and the snot was pouring from my nose.

Disgusting, I know, but the truth just the same.

I did quite a bit of knitting on the flight to Tennessee.  For some reason, I forgot to take pictures though.

One annoying thing on the plane…obnoxious children.

Well, it wasn’t that the children were obnoxious.  They were just being kids.  It was the parent of the children who allowed the kids to hang over the back of their seats and yell.

Grrr.

Meanwhile, a family sitting behind me had several children of their own, and they were the most well-behaved kids I’ve seen…especially given that they had already endured a drive of several hours just to get to Seattle and fly across the country.  They were adorable.

We had a short layover in Nashville.  I managed to knit a few rounds of my sock, this time taking a picture…

Soon, it was time to board our connecting flight.  The ride to Podunk, USA was short, but the views out of the window were just as gorgeous as ever…

Ok, so it was a little foggy in places.  But, when the fog cleared…oooh laaa laaa…

As we flew over the beach, we saw the shoreline, which was an amazing sight from the air.

Of course, I didn’t take a picture.  I think I was just about burned out from picture taking.

After landing, and while we were waiting for our bags, we heard Chicky’s name called out over the PA system.

Apparently, she’d left her backpack, with the Mr.’s laptop, on the plane.

Fortunately, this was Podunk, USA…a small place.

She retrieved the backpack, a little embarrassed.

Soon, the bags had been collected, and we had a joyous reunion with Dancing Girl, her father, and Guy Friend, who had come to pick us up.

It was late.

We were all tired.

Coupon Queen, Grand Pooba, and Super Sis’s family still had to drive a couple of hours to their home.

Fortunately, my family was already home.

Yay for new, bigger airports!

Pele and Aubie were so glad to see us when we got home.  Guy Friend had taken care of them and the house while we had been gone.

I had boarded Molly, poor baby.

She was incredibly happy to see me when I picked her up the next day…

Molly came home very appreciative of her family.  She’d been boarded for eleven nights…the longest ever.  I think she thought she’d been given up.  Poor thing.  We’ve been giving her a lot of extra love since we got back.

All in all, it had been a wonderful vacation.

We would have never been able to have such a wonderful adventure if it had not been for the extreme generosity of Coupon Queen and Grand Pooba, who financed the entire trip (sans the souvenirs we bought ourselves).

So, I want to extend a HUGE thank you to these wonderful in-laws of mine.  I will forever be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created during this trip.

Day 8 – Seattle

Day 8 of the Great Adventure started off on the Lido Deck with the last breakfast of the cruise, where I took a picture of my last look at the harbor…

Debarking is always a sad thing, let me tell you.  After being pampered for seven nights, I was not ready to reenter life on land.

One of the worst parts about leaving the ship is finding your luggage and lugging it out.  It’s ironic how we were offered all kinds of help when we were getting ready to board the ship, but the staff pretty much gives you the boot when you leave and wishes you good luck as you go out…sans assistance.

LOL

We made our way to our prearranged shuttle and got deposited at the same hotel we had stayed at a week before.

After checking in, we prepared ourselves for another day of adventures.

Coupon Queen had wisely chosen the hotel’s location…within walking distance of the Light Rail, one of Seattle’s mass transportation systems.

We had to ride the entire length, which had about thirteen stops.

After a short duration of thirty minutes, we were deposited in the heart of Seattle.

We were ready to explore!

We really wanted to visit the Pike Street Market, which we had heard great things about…

Pike Street Market is a conglomeration of food stalls.

Remember that I hail from Podunk, USA, where the only market I see is Publix.

Hearing vendors hawk their wears was an interesting experience…

The next picture is the view of the market from the lower street level.  You’ll notice that the building says “Sanitary Public Market.”  I read a sign inside that explained that this building was named such because back in the day when it was first built, shoppers were not allowed to take their horses inside the building, thus making it sanitary.

What amazed me about this market is that you could find almost anything you wanted…

The market really does cater to the melting pot population of Seattle.

We visited the fish market, where we waited for the guys to throw the fish, as we’ve seen done on TV.  The guys put on a great show, let me tell you!

The market opens up into the street, where vendors sell their wares under tents…

The main thing that Rooster and I wanted to do was visit the first Starbucks, which was opened in Seattle in 1971.

Thanks to a fancy phone with GPS, Rooster found it…right in the heart of the market…

This is a busy place, let me tell you!  The line stretched out the door, but we didn’t mind waiting.

We had entertainment…

The original Starbucks is very stripped down inside, unlike the newest franchises…

I was surprised at how small this Starbucks was.  There were no tables to sit at.  I saw this plaque as the line moved forward…

And this…

Rooster, Chicky, my nephews Music Man and Dr. J, and myself waited, placing our orders when it was time.

This was the second time that I splurged during this trip, ordering a Chocolate Coconut Creme Frappuccino…

This drink was recommended by the lovely young lady who waited on me, and she did not steer me wrong.  It was smooth as silk.  The coconut gave it the summery/vacation taste that was just right for this trip.

Let me take a moment to talk about the staff who man this store.

They were, quite simply, amazing.  They were so patient and extremely helpful.  I did not see a single person who wasn’t smiling.  One would think that it would be difficult to keep up the pace day in and day out given the crowds that pour through the door.  Not so!  I was highly impressed!

Of course, I couldn’t leave without getting a permanent souvenir…

I love the back of the cup…

When I exited the Starbucks, Grand Pooba had a surprise for me.  While we had been inside, waiting to be served, the rest of the family had walked down the street, and Pooba has found this sign…

Oh my word.

YARN!!

I was eager to find the store, but first I had to walk up this huge hill…

Here’s the view looking down…

While everyone else shopped, I went looking for the yarn store.  Super Sis was so great and offered to accompany me.  She doesn’t even knit, but she was willing to support me in my love for all things fiber.

We wound up having a mini adventure of our own as we happened upon a film crew working on a scene for a movie…

No, that’s not Brad Pitt.  It was actually a dummy set up for the stunt.  But, more on that later.

We were on a mission – to find yarn.

And find it we did.

So Much Yarn really lived up to its name, let me tell you.  My peek in the door proved that…

Of course, a peek was not enough.

In we went…ready to play with yarn!

The store has three rooms.  The yarn is organized by gauge, beginning with the lace weight yarn and working into the heavier yarn as you make your way through the store.

Super Sis asked me a few questions about yarn and then found a comfy chair to sit in while I mused about what to purchase, because you know I HAD to purchase something!

I decided not to go overboard and purchased this…

That is Happy Feet.  I chose the color because it reminded me of autumn.  They’re going to be a lovely pair of socks one day!!

Super Sis and I made our way back to our family, passing the site of the film shoot, where the stunt had just been performed, and the dummy had met up with a bus…

It was interesting to see all of the extra people involved with this.

As we made our way up the hill, we got a better view of the dummy and the “blood” that was running down the street.  In fact, I even heard someone say, “Hey, clean up the blood.”  LOL

The blood was everywhere, including the bus’s windshield…

This area of Seattle has some great shopping, let me tell you.  There were a lot of people enjoying the wonderful weather too.  As I walked, I saw the sign for the market and couldn’t resist taking another picture of it…

The next picture is of Dr. J, Super Sis, and Super D.  I don’t know why, but I just love this picture.  Rooster is walking in front of them, and Music Man is in front of Rooster…

We saw street performers…

Isn’t that dog just the cutest thing?

We saw more Starbucks stores…

After a few hours, Coupon Queen and Grand Pooba were pooped, so they decided to ride the Light Rail back to the hotel.  Super Sis and her family decided to see a movie.  My crew decided to continue shopping and then grab dinner.

We headed into the large mall that is in the center of Seattle…

Rooster and the Mr. got tired, but we still had an hour to kill before dinner, so while they sat in the mall, Chicky and I headed back out to look around.  I was still in awe of the tall buildings and the number of people out and about…

An Ann Taylor Loft store was directly in our path.

Darn.  I just hate that…my new favorite store and all.

We soon tired of the hefty price tags and headed back to the mall and our chosen restaurant for dinner…

We had a good time during dinner, with everyone selecting appetizers to eat as dinner.  That was all we were hungry for.

As we chatted, we discussed ideas for our next vacation and agreed to start saving our money.

After dinner, we hopped on the Light Rail and headed back to the hotel.  It had been a full day, and we had one more day of travel ahead of us.

Day 7 – Victoria

Day 7 of The Great Adventure found us on our way to Victoria, British Columbia (i.e. Canada).

We weren’t going to be pulling in until the early evening hours, so we had all day on the ship to play.

I spent a lot of time in the Crow’s Nest, checking out the scenery through the large windows.  I saw the Princess ship.  You might remember that this ship was, for the most part, our companion during the week…

For lunch, we had been invited to the dining room to a specially-prepared fare for frequent cruisers.

I loved the view from the dining room…

We were greeted with glasses of champagne and specially-designed tiles (which will make great coasters)…

The menu was fancy and not vegan friendly.  I settled for the salad, minus the meat on top.  I passed on dessert; however, the dining room steward brought me a lovely plate of dessert.

After lunch, we headed back to the Crow’s Nest to await Team Trivia.

I took a few more pictures.

After a while, I caught my first glimpse of Victoria, British Columbia, the final stop for the Westerdam…

After trivia, we headed to our room to pack.  We were going to be in port most of the evening, and we had to make sure we got our suitcases in the hallway before midnight.

Packing was not fun, let me tell you.

Imagine four people in a room the size of a closet, trying to cram a gagillion souvenirs and two large bags of dirty clothes into the suitcases they came on ship with.

Not easy.

We grumped at each other for the first ten or fifteen minutes before settling in and getting things done.

Then, we headed to dinner.  I had the fruit dish as an appetizer…

The dining room’s large windows provided such a great view of the setting sun…

I watched this small boat accompany the ship’s entry into port…

The Princess was pulling to port as well…

We hurriedly ate dinner, eager to get on with the business of touring Victoria.

Now, I’ve gotta tell you that my children had been eagerly awaiting the moment when Super Sis and I would be stepping on Canadian soil.  It had, after all, been at least 25 years since we had visited our “homeland.”

Chicky took a picture of us stepping off the ship.

I can’t show you this picture because 1) It shows our faces but most importantly 2) My eyes look like some lunatic’s.

If you’re one of my Facebook buds, you can testify to both points.

I can, however, show you the picture of us (or rather me since I cropped out Super Sis’s head, which showed her face a bit) kissing Canadian concrete…

Folks, this is what happens when you cross a Redneck who loves NASCAR with worldwide traveling adventures…

We saw this sign as we entered customs…

I felt a pull of my heart strings.  I know it sounds strange because I’ve spent most of my life in the United States; however, my Canadian roots go deep.  My grandpa had a farm, and he had maple trees on that farm.  One year when he came down to visit us in Alabama when I was a youngster, he brought us original maple syrup…not the Aunt Jemima kind.  I remember how different it tasted.  As an adult, I now appreciate how authentic that syrup was.

I felt a few tears well up in my eyes.  I was, indeed, back in my “homeland,” setting all of Chicky and Rooster’s jokes aside.

This sign forewarned us that the American dollar wouldn’t go quite as far in Canada…

As we began our nearly 1.5 mile walk downtown, I saw this horse-drawn tram…

Our walk took us through a residential area.  The gardens we passed were lovely, with such beauties as this…

The residential area opened up to a beautiful harbor with large hotels surrounding it…

We walked past the Parliament Building…an immense, ornate piece of architecture…

The boats in the harbor reminded me of Florida…

I don’t know if you can see, but the flowers in the lawn spell out “Welcome to Victoria.”

The next picture is of the Empress Hotel, a famous hotel that opened its doors in 1908 and is known for its traditional Afternoon Tea…

Street performers were out in full force…

I don’t know what the next building was, but I just knew that it was BIG.  Podunk, USA doesn’t have big buildings like this…

It was so neat to be able to walk down the store-lined street…another new experience for a Redneck like me…

We spent a longggggg time shopping.

I had not seen yarn up to this point, but I was on high alert.

Folks, yarn called out to me like a siren, I kid you not.  I was minding my own business when I turned me head to look in a completely different direction from that in which we were headed.

I spied this sign…all the way from the corner down the street…

…And I went running…

…Only to discover that the store had been closed for three hours.  I had to make do with looking through the window…

Look at that glorious yarn.

It could have been mine.

Sigh.

I’m sure the store keepers had to clean up a lot of drool I left behind.

Sigh.

Victoria was a WONDERFUL place to shop.  Sure, there were your “touristy” stores, but there were also a lot of unique stores.

I found a cute little tea shop that sold a wide variety of teapots and other tea making devices.  I didn’t buy anything, though, and kicked myself later when the Mr. told me I should have.  Why do guys always tell you it’s okay to buy something AFTER you’ve walked away.  Hmmm.

Eventually, we had to begin our walk back.  The buildings around the harbor were lit up in white lights and presented a lovely panorama…

We popped into the Empress Hotel for a closer look, but we didn’t get past the lobby since we didn’t actually have rooms there…

The Parliament Building at street level was even more impressive after dark…

The harbor was gorgeous at sunset…

One last glance at the Empress Hotel…

As we neared the port and our ship, I got this terrific picture of the moon’s reflection on the water…

Ships were beckoning their passengers back.  The Princess is the ship on the left, and the Westerdam is on the right…

After a late night snack on the Lido Deck, I headed to bed, taking another look at my souvenir from the day…

It had been a wonderful day.  I was a little sad that the journey was nearly over…until I remembered that we still had another day of adventures planned…
