Owl Cozie

On Sunday, I completed another project.

This is my Owl Cozie…

I found the free pattern through Ravelry.  The pattern can be found directly, here, though.

I used Lion Brand Cotton and size 5 needles.

The eyes you see are glued on; however, I ordered sew-on eyes that will stay better.  As soon as they come in, I’ll switch them out.

This was a really fun and easy project to knit up.  The cables were extremely easy to execute, so if you’ve wanted to try cable work but never have, it’s an easy project to start with.

I learned how to do the duplicate stitch (for the owls’ beaks).  There’s a link to a tutorial on the pattern page.

Easy-peasy…just what I like!!

Star Stitch Hair Tamer

First of all, I’d like to add a disclaimer to this post by stating that I am not neglecting my teaching duties.

Now I shall carry on.

This past weekend, I finished another small project for my Harry Potter knitting forum.  This is called the Star Stitch Hair Tamer, a free pattern you can find on Ravelry.

The stitch was a new one for me but easy to execute.  I used Lion Brand Cotton and size 6 needles.

I knit 80 rows of the pattern repeat but, in hindsight, should have only knit 70.  Lesson learned for the next time.

If/when I make this again, I will also shorten the row and knit fewer repeats across.  It is bit wide.  Still, I really, really like the way the stitch crawls up the piece.

The yarn is very soft; the headband is quite comfortable.

If you’re looking for a quick knit or a small gift item…Christmas is quickly approaching…I highly recommend this little item!

Pinwheels Lace Bookmark

Last week, I knit up a quick project to turn in for a Quidditch event in my Harry Potter knitting forum, because I am nerdy that way.

This is my Pinwheels Lace Bookmark…

The challenge was to knit an item of luxury, so I interpreted this to mean that my Trekking Pro Natura sock yarn, from which I used leftovers from a different project, is a prized possession of mine and hence should be considered a luxury.  In addition, I explained to my “professors” that reading was once considered a skill taught only to the elite, thus it was a luxury.

The pattern is free on Ravelry.  If you want to learn how to knit lace, it’s the perfect small project for this.  If you love knitting lace but don’t have a lot of time, it will fill that need and provide instant gratification at the same time.

I used size 0 needles, and it still came out rather large; however, it lays flat and actually does its job quite nicely…

It was a good way to use up a bit of yarn without requiring the purchase of an entire new skein of it!  I only used 23 yards to finish this.

The only modification I made to the pattern was to braid three strings together instead of making a tassel.  I found that the instructions for the tassel were confusing, so I did my own thing.  An i-cord would have worked well also.

A Yarn Treat

I received the new Knit Picks catalog in the mail early this past week, and as I flipped through the pages, my attention was drawn to one kit in particular…

That, my friends, is the Heartwarming Stocking Kit.

Oh word, but I just knew I had to have it.  The Mr. once asked if I would knit some stockings for the house, so I figured this was the perfect opportunity…especially since the kit was on sale.

I ordered it, and my box arrived today…

I eagerly dug in…

Isn’t it pretty?

Take a look at what you see when you turn the bag over…

Oh, yarny goodness!!!!

I didn’t dare open the plastic wrap to touch the yarn in fear of totally losing my wits and forgetting that I had lesson plans to write.

The plans have been finished, and I have one day of fun before the week begins (along with another ESOL class).

I have decided to play with yarn on Sunday.

No, I will not cast on, because I have two other projects going.  However, I will cradle the yarn tenderly, loving on it…holding it close to my face…dreaming of when I can put the first stitches on my needles.

The colorwork scares me, but I’ve got some time to get over my fears.

I have much to do in the way of real life work and such.

Still, the joy from the yarn treat, though a bit frivolous, will linger, giving me something to look forward to when things slow down.

Marilinda Socks

I have a finished project to show off!

I started my newest pair of socks in June but set them down to work on other things.

These are Cookie A’s “Marilinda” from her book Knit. Sock. Love.

I bought the yarn, Casacade Heritage Sock, in Sitka, Alaska during the cruise I went on with the family three summers ago.

The pattern was actually easy.  I know it looks complicated.  Trust me.  It wasn’t.

I did have to frog the first sock when I was the on the heel because I realized that it was going to be too big.  I should know myself better.  I have a loose tension, and my gauge is always bigger than what the pattern says.  Size 0 needles are the way to go for me!

I turned these in for detention in the Harry Potter Knit/Crochet House Cup forum on Ravelry.  I’m hoping to collect my ten points for the pair.  Woo hoo!

I think these are going be just perfect when the weather turns cooler, don’t you?

Balancing Work With Play

As you know, I tend to be an overachiever and a workaholic.

This often leaves me feeling extremely burned out by May.

One thing that this past summer did, with all of my self-indulged pampering, was remind me that I need to carve out time for myself on a regular basis so I don’t have to play catchup later on.

With that in mind, I joined the Harry Potter Knit/Crochet House Cup (HPKCKC) on Ravelry.  This forum is a friendly competition where students are sorted into houses, complete “classwork” according to themed prompts, participate in Quidditch, and enjoy the company of other fiber fanatics.

Participating this summer did WONDERS for me.  I don’t have a local knitting group, so people kind of look glassy-eyed when I try to talk about my projects.  Getting to know fellow members has, once again, stretched my horizons globally, and I’ve grown to love these sweet people who are trying, like me, to find balance in their lives.

A few days ago, I got sorted into Hufflepuff, and I am thrilled!  I’ve been scheming…trying to figure out how to fit projects into prompts…submitting a proposal for an OWL…

That’s how I spent Saturday and Sunday.

Today is Monday…a holiday.

It’s back to reality and a long to-do list that did not get any smaller with my self-imposed “time off.”

It’s long.  I probably won’t get everything done.  I’ve listed the items in the order of importance…at least the top half.

Feeling rejuvenated from my days of play, I am ready to attack this list.

Maybe that’s the secret…getting energy from being rested.

Hmmm…an interesting thought.

Signs It’s Not Summer Vacation Anymore

Signs it’s not summer vacation anymore…

Visiting Starbucks…before 7am…on a Monday…to hear “See you tomorrow” from the guy who rings up my order without my saying a word

Dreaming of finding time to start another project with this yarn combination…

Enjoying a glass of my favorite wine after a good but overwhelming week and a half back in the classroom…

Baby Bear Hat

Do you remember the baby hats and capris I recently made for a sweet friend of Chicky’s?  She’s got her own little photography business going, and she texted me last week to ask if I could make another hat for her.  She’s getting good at finding patterns.

I sent her out to the store to find the yarn she wanted, and she dropped it off in the wee hours of Friday morning.

I just got around to casting on after spending a couple of days recuperating from my trip to Lakeland.

The pattern is called Baby Bear Hat, and it is free!  You can find it here.

First, the yarn…

Lion Brand Heartland – Sequoia colorway

The picture does not do the yarn justice.  It is a deep brown with flecks of lighter brown.  It’s beautiful and very soft, although as is typical of acrylic yarn, it did not slide that easily through my fingers.  Still, it wasn’t bad to knit with.  The project only required a scant 20 grams of yarn!

I made the newborn size on size 9 needles, despite everyone else who’s knit this using a size 10.5.  My knitting is loose, and the yarn label recommended size 9 needles.  I’d talked to Amber, and she had mentioned that my other hats could have been a tad smaller.  She wasn’t criticizing; I had asked her for honest feedback.  I figured with smaller needles and, thus, a tighter gauge, the size would be better.

I followed the pattern until the decreases.  I always read others’ project notes and had decided, since I do not like to seam, to knit the ears directly onto the hat.  I marked the first stitch on the first decrease round, knit the next eighteen stitches (decreasing according to the pattern), and marked the next stitch.  Then, I finished the round.

I finished knitting the hat according to the instructions and bound off.

To make the ears, I picked up six stitches beginning with the stitch below the one I had marked.  I’d run out of stitches to pick up the first time I tried by starting at the marked stitch and started picking up all over again.

I completed the ears as instructed except for the first decrease on row 4.  I did as someone suggested and knit a SSK, which made that side lean the right way (if you’re a knitting or crocheter, you understand how important this is when shaping).

The result is an adorable little hat!  I cannot wait to see it on Amber’s client!

Little Labyrinth Dishcloth

Here’s one more dishcloth for you!

This is my Little Labyrinth Dishcloth.  It is a free pattern available here.

Forgive me for the poor quality of the photograph.

I knit this cloth for a Harry Potter Knit/Crochet assignment (the forum is here if you’re interested in joining).

The yarn is Peaches & Creme…Happy Go Lucky (colorway), and the needle size is 6.  I used 52 yards of yarn.

Although I am used to knitting lace and, in fact, love the challenge of it, I did not enjoy knitting this pattern.

I am a gal who likes order.  I like symmetry.

This pattern is not symmetrical.  It can’t be because it’s a labyrinth.

My head knew this, but my fingers did not, and I had to tink back frequently.

Grrrr.

I was happy to bind off.

I like the look of the pattern when the cloth is held up the light.  It also makes a good dishcloth; I have used it quite a few times already.

Now, it’s time to get back to the socks I started knitting in June!

Double Bump Dishcloth

I finished another project a few days ago.  This is my Double Bump Dishcloth.  It is a free Ravelry download available here.

I used size 6 needles…smaller than what the pattern called for because my tension is loose.

I used Peaches n Creme yarn.  You probably recognize the color.  Last Christmas, I bought a cone of this yarn.  I’ve knit a few cloths from it already.  The color is Happy Go Lucky.  I used 51 yards of yarn for this project.

The pattern is a four-line repeat that is so easy to memorize.  I love the texture!!!

I’ve already added this to my dishcloth drawer and, in fact, have used it!  This pattern only took two or three hours to knit up.  I know I’ll be using more in the future!
