Pampering

Self-care may seem indulgent, but in reality, it’s integral to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Can I get an amen?

Yesterday, I indulged in a bit of this.

I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating.  I adore my hairdresser.  She’s incredibly kind, sassy as all get out, and curses like a rated R movie.  This girl does not play.  She speaks my language (except for the cursing part).

When I got to her salon, she commented on my hair and how great it looked.

Y’all, I should have taken a picture of it.  Although I had showered, I had not washed it.  I mean, why if I was getting it taken care of anyhow?

I hadn’t even brushed it.

Yep.  I go out in public with bed head.  There.  I admitted it.  The truth is that when you have naturally curly hair, a brush will ruin it.  Hello humidity and frizz!

She loved it though and thought I’d purposely styled it that way.  She’s used to seeing me with my hair straightened.

I was feeling like I should be on a Prell commercial . . . except for the forehead bandage thing.

Ahem.

Anyhoo, she began to work her magic, and I sat in her chair enjoying the pampering.

She has a son who will be starting high school next month.  He’s attending the school where I teach, so we are both excited.  In fact, she has told me that it’s largely due to our conversations over the years about my teaching there that led her to the decision to enroll him in our AICE (advanced) program.  Plus, knowing that I’m there will be a comfort to her.

All the feels, y’all.

We were the only ones in the salon, so we chatted to our hearts’ content without interruption, except when she moved me to the hair dryer.

I had not been feeling well yesterday – the ever-simmering headache was worse than the day before – but as I sat under that dryer, I started to feel better.  I later learned, from a text from Super Sis, that she’d asked her church’s leadership to pray for me during one of their meetings (she works at her church and was at the meeting).  I’m fully convinced that God provided relief at the exact time they were praying – no coincidence there.

I think my favorite part of a day at the hair salon is the actual hair washing.  It’s akin to having a pedicure without the ticklish feet part.  I could have taken a nap at this point.

Our fun continued as she proceeded to cut and style my hair.  When you’ve got hair like mine and can get it blown out straight – well – there’s something soothing about it.  You know what I mean – the pulling out of each section of hair on the round brush.  There’s a rhythm to it that’s as hypnotic as a lullaby.

Pampering at its best, y’all.

I hugged Dana goodbye as I told her to send me her son’s schedule.  She’s probably going to give me a bag of snacks for him – one I’ll keep in my closet at school so if he gets hungry, he can grab something.  I love being a school mama for my friends’ children.  ❤

I felt almost brand new as I headed home.  Not only had my hair been lightened but my mood had been as well.

Cooking All the Things

My summertime running around has been curtailed a bit thanks to a headache that continues to simmer because of my recent run-in with a wall.

That hasn’t diminished my efforts in the kitchen, though.  I’ve been busy trying new recipes and experimenting a little.

Saturday, I found a very, very ripe banana on the kitchen counter.  Coincidentally, I had an email waiting for me.  In it was a recipe for Vegan Banana Pancakes, from LovingitVegan.

They didn’t require many ingredients and were really easy to mix up.  I’ve tried a few vegan pancake recipes in the past and have had issues with them getting fluffy.  This recipe worked well, though.

Later that day, I pulled out something I’d ordered a couple of weeks before . . .

That is the Snack Bar Maker Set, by Pampered Chef.  Someone in the Detoxinista Facebook group had posted a photo of hers, along with bars she’d made in them.  I knew I had to have this.

I love that it’s silicone and can be used in the oven.  I also really like the cover.  It came with a spatula too!

I’d had my eye on the Superfood Pecan Energy Bars that A Couple Cooks, which they had recently posted.

Mine don’t look like theirs, of course, but I think I know why.  I believe that I over-blended the mixture.  The next time I make these, I’ll use my Vitamix to blend up the dates and pecans before hand-mixing the rest of the ingredients.

They look a little like Larabars, don’t they?  The consistency isn’t crunchy, like I’d anticipated, but the taste is wonderful!  There is a tiny bit of a crunch because of the chia seeds, but I’m really looking for more of a granola bar type of crunch.  I found a recipe for No-Bake Granola Bars on the Pampered Chef website.  The Big Man’s World also has a lot of recipes for granola bars.

On Monday, I tried a new recipe, which I saw posted on Instagram.  Dang, that social media and the pressure it brings.

Speaking of social media . . .

Here’s the Healthy Flourless Cinnamon Bun Breakfast Cake – another recipe by The Big Man’s World, which he posted on Instagram (the recipe is on his website too).

I love this one!  The cake is a great texture, and it rose beautifully.  It’s also very moist!  The cinnamon flavor is subtle but still discernible.  Now the icing – well, it’s meh.  I tried his cream cheese option, but it didn’t turn out like I expected.

I made his Paleo version for the Mr. and adapted it for the Mr.’s SCD diet.

I should have left well alone.  The cake looked and smelled delicious, but I worried that the Mr. would want frosting, so I did some experimenting and created my “own” recipe from a combination of a couple of others I found online.

I used dairy-free butter, honey, vanilla, peanut butter, and cinnamon.

It looked pretty, and while the Mr. liked the cake itself, he was not as keen on the frosting.  He said it didn’t have enough flavor.

I really need to stick with coloring inside the lines.

After I’d finished making the desserts, it was time to think about my dinner.  Before heading to the grocery store yesterday morning, I’d flipped through my Instant Pot recipe book and found a recipe for Lentil-Spinach Curry.

The list of ingredients was short (always a win), and I put it together very quickly.  It was ready in about 40 minutes when I factor in sauteeing the vegetables and the actual cook time.

The only thing I had to add after-the-fact was salt and pepper, which the recipe surprisingly didn’t require.

It was delicious, and I ate a bowl of leftover curry for lunch today.  Yum!

Acting Like Tourists

After spending Saturday at home in very chill, full-on recovery mode, the Mr. and I headed out for some exploring on Sunday.

Chicky has been spending time with her guy up here in these parts, so she asked if we wanted to meet them halfway between here and there.

Of course we would never turn down the opportunity to see our kids, so we heartily agreed.

I took my knitting along for the ride.  I’m getting close to finishing my newest project.

Our first stop was Rosemary Beach, which is on the Gulf Coast.

Y’all, I’ve lived in the Florida Panhandle for almost fifteen years, but this was the first time I’d ever visited this quaint tourist town.

What a lovely sight to behold as we drove in.

I’m a sucker for canopy roads, country girl that I am.

We passed a farmer’s market on a sprawling green, and I made a mental note that we’ll need to go back one day.

Chicky and B, her guy, had run into some traffic, so we sat outside of the restaurant we’d selected for lunch and waited.

I’ll be getting out my stitches on Wednesday – hence the bandage.

I was also sporting a headache, my constant companion since my run-in with the wall.  I had not taken any pain medication in an attempt to be strong, but y’all, how stupid I was!  I didn’t even take it with me – another dumb move.  It lurked behind my eyes all day, but I was determined not to let it put a damper on my day with my girl.

Here’s where we ate . . .

The service was wonderful, and the food was incredible!  I got a burrito with grilled veggies.  It was so big that I wound up taking most of it home.  Chips and salsa beforehand ruined my appetite.

We were so full that we needed to walk.  We decided to visit the farmer’s market we’d seen driving in, but alas, after walking over a quarter of a mile, we couldn’t find any sign of it!  Every single tent had vanished!

During our walk back to our cars, we stopped to take some photos – Chicky knows how much I love them and, truth be told, so does she.  😉

Aren’t they cute? ❤

We did a bit of shopping on our trip back to where we’d parked and made more plans for our day.  Although a storm was threatening, we decided to drive to Seaside, another popular tourist venue, and hunt for vegan donuts, which B said he’d seen at a food truck.

The drive wasn’t too bad; these little towns are sprinkled all the way down Highway 98.  The Mr. and I quickly found parking while we waited for the kids.  Then, it was off to find the food trucks.

There was quite an assortment, let me tell you, and lots of different dishes and drinks were available.

This one struck my fancy . . .

I didn’t get anything at this truck, but I fully intend to go back sometime and sample a couple of things.

The truck we were looking for was on the opposite end from where we’d started.

Now y’all, I totally forgot to take a picture of the doughnut I bought!  How in the world?  I guess I was so focused on eating it that capturing the moment slipped by me (plus, I was fighting a headache).  The only vegan one they had was a glazed, but hey, I wasn’t complaining!  We all sampled it and agreed that the texture, so hard to get right with vegan things, was perfect!

Chicky and her guy got some fancy doughnut with filling, which she promptly got all over her black clothes.

She’s like her Daddy in that way.

Ha!

We walked around a little more, and I got Chicky (or was it B?) to take another picture of the Mr. and me since I didn’t like the one we’d gotten at Rosemary Beach.  It’s all in the angles, girls, isn’t it – especially with waistless dresses.

We ambled around awhile; I returned to a food truck that had frozen lemonade (not as good as Toomer’s Corner but still yummy). Before too long, Chicky and B left.  They had somewhere to be, and we needed to scoot to feed the dogs and get my meds.

Hugs ensued, and we went our merry way.

Getting out like this is something that the Mr. and I need to do more of.  We live in a beautiful part of Florida and need to take advantage of the sights available.

Making My Own Perfume

Yesterday, I mentioned that I’d made my own perfume on Thursday.  I thought I’d show you a little more of the process in this post.

I started buying Young Living essential oils in 2017 to help with pain management during my ankle recovery.  I’m all about holistic treatments.

I love learning about the different ways these oils can be used, as evidenced by the groups I’m a member of on Facebook.

A few weeks ago, I’d downloaded a new app . . .

It was created by Jen O’Sullivan and has a lot of information about essential oils.  I have another app that I’d been using, but I’d been reading a lot about this app, so I finally installed it.

I’d found several recipes for perfumes, which had intrigued me a lot.  I ordered a package of six atomizers, which I believe came from China . . .

Although I ordered them off of Amazon, they took about three weeks to arrive.

Aren’t they cute though?  They’ll fit nicely in my purse!

After they arrived in the mail, I ran out and got witch hazel, which you use to top off your blends.  It was either that or vodka, which I wasn’t opposed to, but witch hazel seemed like a healthier option.

Then, I got all of my supplies together and began to have some fun.

I’d found a couple of recipes that I had the oils for, so I prepared those.

It was so easy – just a few drops of this and a few drops of that.  I felt like I was at Hogwarts in Potions class.

After adding the distilled water and witch hazel, I was set to go!

I created homemade labels by using some of the white sticky paper from address labels I’d received free in the mail.  I knew that I needed to label these because I’ve planned to make several bottles of perfume once a couple more oils arrive in this month’s Young Living order.

The Sweet Rosemary Mint is my favorite out of the two perfumes I made.  It’s very light, and the mint aroma is soothing.  I have learned that I cannot wear strong floral scents.  They overpower my senses and give me migraines.

I’ll post updates when I try new recipes.

One Determined Chick

First of all, a special thanks to so many of my friends wishing me well on my head mishap.  Not one single person has made me feel embarrassed about it.

So, as I’m writing this, I’m on Day four of recovery, and wow.  Just wow.

Y’all, I really hit that wall hard and am still feeling the effects of it.

After getting home on Tuesday, all I wanted to do was sleep; however, the doctor had strongly advised against that, so instead, I cooked.

I made the Mr. some Homemade Beef Burgers and some Roasted Butternut Squash with Bacon and Thyme, which are Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) friendly.

Pre-cooking

The links above go to a new-to-me website I recently discovered.

He’d eaten his last piece of cake, so I whipped up these White Chocolate Biscuit Cakes.

Some time back, I’d randomly purchased cacao butter for a recipe that I’ve since lost sight of.  The Mr. cannot have chocolate, but he can have the cacao butter, which is supposed to mimic the taste of chocolate.

After sitting in the freezer for a few hours, this is what one of the cakes looks like . . .

He is loving them!  They’re different from what he usually eats.  Win!

Now, I’ve got to tell you that the no-working-out mandate from the doctor was frustrating, even that first day.

Y’all, I have come sooooo far in my fitness!  The 80 Day Obsession program I’ve been doing (and have five days left of) has been so wonderful!  I know I’ve said this a few times already, but I’m serious!  I haven’t felt this strong in a long time and look at my abs . . .

I didn’t know that my abs could curve in like that at the top!

Can you see why taking time off from my fitness regimen was a hard pill to swallow?  I hate setbacks.  Sigh.

I decided to put on my wireless ear buds and slowly walk around the house for some safe cardio . . .

Yeah, I was icing my head too – I’m such a multi-tasker.

I sent the video to Rebecca.  We were texting each other, commiserating with one another’s physical ailments.

After my walk, I took a nap in my chair before putting the finishing touches on the Mr.’s dinner.  Then, I stayed up late watching Thor.  What a funny movie!

On Wednesday, I drove to the school and delivered some chocolate chip muffins to my friend, LeAnne.  She had texted me the evening before to see how I was doing.  She’s my dessert taste-tester, which is why I took the muffins to her the next day.  Plus, I had not seen her all summer, and I’d missed her.

She told me that she’s forever doing stuff like me, only I seem to hurt myself much more worse than she does.

What can I say?  I guess I’m just talented.

Ahem.

On the way home, I picked up a sandwich, which I’d been craving since the day before.  I sent this picture to Rebecca, who’d texted to see how I was doing.

You can still see the knot peeking out from the bottom of my bandage.

When I got home, I went for my “walk” around the house.  Pele thought I had lost my mind.  Not quite, darlin’, but I think I left part of it on that wall at school.

Y’all, the dogs were soooooo funny!  They started following me, so I had to video them . . .

You can hear me laugh a few times.  They were too cute!

They finally gave up after thirty minutes; I walked for over an hour.

Well, I was tired after and settled in for another nap in my chair.

I think I got up and washed dishes at some point.  I honestly can’t remember how the rest of my afternoon went.  I think I chatted with Super Sis on the phone.  We had quite the conversation as I gave her the 4-1-1 (hey Megan, look at me typing this correctly – not the 411) on my accident.

I can always count on Super Sis’s heartfelt laughter in exactly the right places.

Thursday morning, I woke up feeling puny again (this seems to be the story of my life lately), so I decided to make perfume using some of my essential oils.  It actually wasn’t that hard, and it was fun too!  I’m going to post details about that tomorrow, so check back then if you’re interested (I’m not selling anything!).

I think it was about this time when my friend, Barb, called.  She wanted to check on how I was doing after reading my blog that morning.  She also wanted to know if I was attending her son and daughter-in-law’s gender reveal.  The e-vite had not found its way to my inbox, perhaps stuck in a spam folder.

With late afternoon plans in mind, I decided I needed to get my walk done, since I’d come to the conclusion that it would probably be best to give myself a week off from any strenuous workouts.

Afterward, it was time for a quick shower, a gentle hair washing – no giggling of the head because oy, but it was hurting, and a short nap.

Then, I dressed up, put on a bit of makeup, and headed out to Barb’s shindig.  She lives less than ten minutes from me, so the drive was short and completely do-able given the ongoing headache I’d been suffering from.

What fun I had!  It was great to get out, see those precious young people who I’ve had the pleasure of watching grow up over the years, and celebrate their surprise and joy of finding out that they’re having a GIRL!  I also got to see a young lady who played soccer with Chicky at Southeastern.  She was at the gender reveal, and she’s expecting her own little one in a few months!

On Friday, I went for my walk again and finished up right as Megan texted me.  We’d made plans to do lunch, but we were able to go an hour earlier when she changed up her schedule.  She picked me up, and we visited one of our favorite Thai restaurants in town.  What a luxury to be able to eat at our own pace!  I adore this sweet friend of mine and love getting to spend time with her.  There’s always a lot of laughter involved.

I sure would appreciate y’all’s prayers.  Although the doctor said that I don’t have a concussion, I’m not 100% convinced.  I think the medicine I was prescribed is taking the edge off of the pain, but there’s constant pressure in the front of my head and some around the back.  I just don’t feel like myself.

I know it will get better, but I am short on patience in that department.  Not that you wouldn’t know that from reading my ankle posts.  Ha!

Thanks, everyone!

Wall 1 / Auburnchick 0

Oh Tuesday, can I please get a do-over?

Y’all, I promise you that I do not wake up in the morning, decide that I need something entertaining for my blog, and then purposely walk into trouble.

Somehow, the Universe just knows that things need to be spiced up and BAM, life happens.

So Tuesday.

I slept in.  Duh.  It’s summer vacation.

I got up, dressed for my workout, and headed out the door.  I needed to pay the water bill, run to the grocery store, and stop by my school to ask an administrator a couple of questions.

My agenda really was simple.

In theory.

I got my first two tasks done without any issues and headed to the school.

Y’all, I should have gone back home.

I chit chatted with a couple of teachers, popped my head in to say hello to an administrator (not the one I had gone to talk to), and then decided to run back in and say one more thing to one of the teachers I’d seen earlier.

I waved goodbye, turned to head out, and found myself stopped in my tracks . . .

By the corner of a cement wall.

Oh yes I did.

I’d forgotten that some of the classrooms have walls that jut out.

I knew I’d hit it pretty hard because I got a headache instantly.

I put my hand up to my forehead, and when I pulled it back, there was blood on my fingers.

Oh word, but this was not looking good.

I quickly walked to the bathroom in the main office, and when I looked into the mirror, I was stunned.

Oh yes I did.

I’d hit myself squarely in the middle of my forehead, along with my nose and mouth. I am fortunate that I didn’t break my nose.

I was in a lot of pain and wasn’t sure if I needed to get it stitched up.

I walked back to the classroom my friend was in and called for her to come out.  She ambled out until she saw my head and said, “OMG.”

It was bad.

We walked to the office together and raided the nurse’s stash of gauze and tape but then began a quick discussion about what I should do . . . stitches or not?  We decided to ask the opinion of the administrator I’d talked to earlier.

I was mortified and started crying again.  It was all just so embarrassing.

Of course, because I’m Auburnchick and have NO luck whatsoever, the administrator had an office full of people.

So I had to let all of them see me with my forehead like that.  She’s got grown children and grandchildren and has been in education awhile.  She’s seen a lot.

She immediately told me that I needed stitches but advised me to go to our wellness clinic (my district offers this to its employees) to let them check.

Megan bandaged me up before I left.

I think if teaching doesn’t work out for her, she should go into the medical profession.  Mad skills, y’all.

Y’all, I had a bag full of groceries in the car, and I still was undecided about my next course of action.  I didn’t want to go to the ER, and I didn’t want to go to my doctor (I’m going to find a new one because she was very rude to me during my last appointment).

I drove to the wellness clinic but called the Mr. on the way.  He hadn’t seen the pictures I’d sent from the school yet, and at first, he thought I was kidding.

He called me back a few minutes later after he got the pictures and was not a happy guy.

He informed me that I am more of a danger to myself than anything else.

Ya think?

He hung up but then called back with the name of a plastic surgeon he wanted me to call.  Then, the Mr. sent me this message . . .

It’s a good thing I wasn’t feeling good because that husband of mine would have gotten sucker punched the next time I saw him.  Turd.

I looked up the number and bless their hearts, they asked if I could be there in thirty minutes.

Living in Podunk City has its benefits.  I was able to drive home, throw my perishables in the refrigerator, apply deodorant (because it’s summer and I might have forgotten earlier), and make it to the doctor’s office.

When I pulled up, I saw the Mr.’s car in the lot.

Bless his heart.

He is a good man.  I had not asked him to meet me there, but he did anyway.

He shook his head when he saw me.

Now, you have to understand something.  At that point, we were a hot mess of a couple.  He was sporting his own bandages.  Last week, he had a bit of skin cancer removed from his face – his first ever – and he’d had stitches and was still covered up.

Bless both of our hearts!

The doctor’s office was hopping.  The nurse told me that I was lucky that they were there.  He’s not always in the office.  He’s a busy doctor in these here parts, you see.

So yeah, I guess I can get lucky every now and then, or rather, I’ll say that God orchestrated that because I don’t believe in luck.

As soon as the doctor saw my head, he ordered the Mr. out of the room, announcing, “We’re doing surgery – right now – and you can’t be in here.”  He was very concerned about infection as well.

Boy, that chair went back fast, and the doctor stuck the numbing needle with the warning that it would hurt.

After living through a triple ankle fracture, it was nothing.

Perspective is everything.

I’d never met this doctor before; I was in for a treat.  He talked to me the entire time.  He cussed a lot.

Ahem.

I kept telling him how stupid I felt.

He said, “Sh$t happens.  You get through it.  The important thing is that you live.”

He must have said, “Sh$t happens” numerous times.  That was going to be the title of this post, but I didn’t want to offend anyone.

How true were his words, though.

I told him I was going to write a blog post about this, and he laughed.

He even counted the stitches for me

Ten, y’all.  Because I’m an overachiever.

Sigh.

Before he put my bandage on, he told me to take a picture for my blog.

Notice all of that swelling?  I wasn’t exaggerating when I said that I’d hit that wall hard.  I am so fortunate that I didn’t break my nose.  It hurt like crap!

I asked if I had a concussion because my neck was hurting, and I was very nauseous.  He said that he didn’t think so since I wasn’t throwing up or having seizures, but he advised me to stay awake for the afternoon.

Good thing he said that because I was ready to go home and take a nap.

I got a flesh-colored bandage that won’t need to be changed because it’s shower-proof.

He prescribed some amped up Motrin and an antibiotic and advised me to apply ice to it when I got home.

He also told me that I couldn’t work out for TWO WHOLE DAYS.  That was the worst part about the entire thing!  I told him that I had rings to close.  He didn’t understand what I was talking about.

Meanwhile, he started chatting with the Mr. and noticed his homemade bandage job, as did the nurse.  Well, they couldn’t have that, and they made him sit in the chair and fixed him up with a new one – one that was waterproof.  Then, they proceeded to talk for a long time about people they both knew.

The doctor liked us.  He told us that we now had VIP cards to his office – if we ever needed anything just to call.

Networking – silver linings, y’all.

Finding joy in the journey continues to be my mantra, it would seem.

An Attention-Getting Hodgepodge

Look at me participating in the Hodgepodge for the second (or is it third?) week in a row.  You know it’s summer when Auburnchick starts writing consistently.

Ha!

Thanks for stopping by to visit!  Don’t forget to link up with Joyce.

1.  I feel most energized when I _______________________.

I feel most energized when I watch students reach their goals.  Last year was incredibly rewarding as I witnessed between 70 and 80% of my students pass the FSA, ACT, or SAT . . . checking off a very important box for graduation.  Their whoops and tears of joy invigorated me!

2.  Where were you ten years ago?

I was here, in Podunk, Florida, and had just finished getting my college degree.  I was busy applying for teaching jobs.  Chicky was about to be a junior in high school, and Rooster was getting ready to start the ninth grade.

SO much has changed since then!!

3.  July 17th is World Emoji Day. Do you use emojis? Which one’s your favorite? Your most used?

I LOVE emojis!  They are wonderful for conveying that extra feeling when you text someone!

The one I use the most is this . . .

I am forever laughing about stuff.  Life is such that you have to laugh as much as you can.

My favorite is probably this one . . .

How many times do I want to slap my head in a What the heck kind of way?

4.  What song would you put on a wedding DO NOT PLAY list?

How about this one, by Carrie Underwood . . .

5.  What deserves less of your attention? More of your attention?

I think that social media deserves less of my attention.

If I stopped checking all of the socials, I might be able to give more attention to the housework that needs to be taken care of.

Of course, I wouldn’t be having so much fun, so there’s that.

6.  My Random Thought

Did you see my post from a couple of days ago?  It’s the one about the annoying noise I kept hearing in my car.

Well, I am proud to say that I ran errands yesterday, and my ride was noise-free!

That was probably the best thing I can say about Tuesday, but more on that tomorrow.

A Productive Monday

I can’t say that I’ve been super productive this summer.

I finally caved and turned off my alarm clock, except for World Cup game days and Sundays.

During the school year, I’ve already worked out, showered, and prepared my lunch by 7:15am.

This past weekend, I decided that I was going to have to regain some control.  After all, living like I’m retired is all fun and games until August rolls around.

So, I said that I’d get up at 7.

I lied.  To the universe, that is.

Ha!

But seriously, after rolling out of bed around 9:45 and making my peanut butter banana shake, I headed out.

My first stop was the school.  I wanted to make sure that the schedule I’ve been told was mine is, still in fact, the schedule I’m set with.  Lesson plans are begging to be written so that I won’t find myself scrambling a few days before we open the doors to the new school year.

Alas, all of the administrators were in a meeting.  Nobody could tell me when my building’s floors will be waxed, so putting my classroom back together is still on the back burner.

Monday wasn’t looking like it was going to be very productive.

I managed to run to the grocery store and pick up a few items for dinner.

After an hour long workout (Day 75 of 80 Day Obsession, y’all), I was ready to sit down.

Only I didn’t because I had decided to be productive.

I spent the next four or five hours in the kitchen, with a brief break to fix the noise in my car (see yesterday’s post).

First, I made a bunch of boiled eggs for the Mr.  I use my Instant Pot for these because they come out perfectly each time.  He eats two of these every day for breakfast.

There were dishes from Sunday that needed to be washed.  It wound up taking a little longer because dirty dishes are like rabbits; they multiply!

After peeling the eggs, I prepped the veggies for the Mr.’s dinner so I’d be ready to throw everything onto the stove when he got home.

Go me!

Then, I baked a batch of chocolate chip muffins for myself.

Don’t judge.  The Mr. still had some of his cake leftover.

I figured to strike while the oven was hot . . . kill two birds with one stone . . . and prepped a new-to-me dish.

A week or two ago, I’d seen a recipe posted by the Minimalist Baker on her Instagram account.  It intrigued me because I had most of the ingredients already, and it seemed pretty easy to prepare.

For the first time ever, I roasted a cauliflower, adding the sauce as directed in her step-by-step instructions.

Look how pretty it turned out.

My Instant Pot got a workout today!  I pulled it out for the second time and prepared quinoa.

Then, for the first time ever, I made the Chimichurri sauce that is mentioned in the cauliflower recipe.

Y’all, this stuff, which I’ve never eaten before, is AMAZING!  It really boosted the rest of my dinner, which was fabulous.

You know, after all of that work, I think I’m going to take it a little easy today.  I’m pretty sure I expended enough energy for a couple of days.

The Noise Sleuth

Have you ever experienced a weird sound in the car . . . a squeak or rattle . . . that you couldn’t find the source of?

If you have, then you’ll know the angst of driving along and having that sound randomly appear.

I had one of these noises crop up a month or two ago, and y’all, it started driving me nuts.

I know that’s a short trip for me, but c’mon . . . humor me, okay?

I really can’t pinpoint an exact day when I started hearing it, but all I know is that whenever I’d go over bumps or make turns, I’d hear what sounded like the seat belt in the back was hitting the inside of the car.

Back when I had children living at home, they wouldn’t always pull the seat belts tight  when they’d exit the car, so they would hang loosely and bounce around.

Being the fixer-upper kind of gal that I am, that was the first thing I checked, especially since Rooster and N had been home in March and had been in our car for two whole weeks.

That didn’t seem to be the issue, but that didn’t stop me from tightening them over and over again, in the hopes that I’d stop hearing that sound.

Eventually, I told the Mr. about it to see if he could hear the sound.

Crazy is a lonely land, y’all, and I wanted some company – or to be rescued from.

He commented that the sound seemed to be coming from the driver’s side.

Hello!  He could hear it too!  He was either crazy, like me (because the longer you’re married, the more you resemble one another), or his hearing was just as good as mine.

Sometimes, it would sound like there was a bottle of water rolling around back there.

Well, I tested so much last year that it wasn’t unusual to have cases of water in the back of my car.  I figured one of them had gone awol from the packaging.

I looked under the seats several times, praying that I’d find a bottle.

I didn’t.  I did, however, find a package of Pop Tarts under the back seat.  That must have been N’s from when they visited in the spring.

Ha!

I found ways to pull up the back parts of my car and open up compartments that probably shouldn’t have been opened.

I checked under the spare tire and relocated some of the hardware that I thought was rolling around back there.

ALL of my attempts proved futile.

I’d reached the end of my rope and was giving serious thought to driving to the Toyota dealership to get them to check for me.

But first, I prayed.

Do not ever tell me that you can’t pray for anything because y’all, you most certainly can.

God knows when a person has reached her wit’s end, and this noise was it for me.

Today, that is.

Ha!

I’d had an idea brewing in my mind that I acted on in the middle of my afternoon – right after I got home from a quick trip to the grocery store (and renewed angst over that noise, which was unbearable on the way home).

I had periodically thought about the middle of the back seat, so I went out and checked.

Sure enough, there was a place to connect a seat belt.

Hmmm.

I got out the car’s manual, visited the index, and turned to the section about seat belts.

That is when the angels sung, y’all.

There was a picture of the seat belt port – located in the ROOF of my car – on the DRIVER’s side.

This was how it looked when I saw it . . .

See it hanging there?

Yep.  That had the makings for a teeth-grinding ride – especially for a person who doesn’t like repetitive noises.

I think that it got knocked loose when I was taking one of the dogs to be groomed or when we were loading/unloading luggage from our recent trip.  Heck, it could have happened when I was taking stuff home from my classroom for the summer.

I played with it a bit, trying to figure out how to secure it.

Go ahead and admire my talent.

I haven’t tested things out yet to see if the noise is, indeed gone.

I’m preferring to live in La La Land for a little while longer.

Actually, I was busy in the house the rest of the afternoon and never got around to taking the car for a test drive.  I’ll check in the morning, though.

Lazy Day

Because I’d been up late Wednesday night, I slept in a bit on Thursday.

My heart was still hurting from the book I’d finished.

I took my time getting out of bed and hung out with the dogs all morning.  It was a beautiful day, and I should have gone to the pool, but mentally, I wasn’t into it.  I needed a bit of solitude.

I took a nap in my chair even though I’d slept late.  I was so tired.

Being sad will do that for you.

When I woke up, it was early afternoon.  The dogs were eager to get some fresh air.

I had been procrastinating my workout but was not about to give in and not do it, so I got dressed.

Just as I was about to get started, my phone rang.  A guy I’d called yesterday was on his way to take a look at my house.  We want to fix our gutters and get a door for our screened in porch.

The workout did not want to happen, y’all.

I persevered, though, and got it in after he left.

Day 72 – Done!

Then, I began preparing dinner for the hubby.  This is one of his new favorite dishes.

It’s a bit of a pain to put together, which is why I don’t make it that often.

The rest of my evening was chill as I blogged and watched television.

Sometimes, you just need a lazy day.

In my case, it’s been a summer of lazy days, but who’s judging (it better not be you!). 🙂
