Things to Ponder Going Into 2012

My weekly issue of People magazine arrived in the mail today, so I, as usual, casually perused it.

Then, when I saw the article, “Remembering Patrick,” I slowed down and read carefully.

I’m a child of the 70’s/80’s, thus it should come as no surprise that Patrick Swayze danced his way into my heart in the movie Dirty Dancing

What a heartthrob!  His death saddened me…hence my interest in the article.

His wife, Lisa, has written a book about her life with Patrick, and the article contains excerpts from it.

I caught my breath, though, as I read the following…

Patrick rarely talked about his ‘dark thoughts.’ ‘Where am I going to go if and when I die?’  When he said [that] out loud, my heart would jump out to him.  I wanted to comfort him.  ‘You’ll be in heaven.’  I knew what I wanted to believe, but there was no way I could be sure.

I’m not God, so I can’t even begin to know the condition of Patrick’s soul when he departed life.  Did he have a relationship with the Lord?  From the above quote, my guess would be no.  Nor does his wife.

How very sad…to live your life without the SURE knowledge of where you’ll wind up after you die.

You want to know the ironic thing?

Patrick knew he’d be somewhere.

Here’s the hard truth, folks.

When we die, we will go either to heaven or to hell.

If you accept that Jesus Christ, the only man who ever walked this earth without committing a sin, died for your sins and was raised after three days, then you WILL spend eternity with the Lord.

The alternative is…well…it’s not good.

As we bid farewell to 2011, we will, undoubtedly give thanks for another year that we either managed or feel blessed to have survived.

But what lies beyond…in 2012?

We’re not guaranteed tomorrow, folks.  There are no do-overs…no Groundhog Days, despite what the movies would like us to imagine.

Salvation is serious business.

It’s the life and death stuff.

After all, when you strip our lives down…take everything away from us…careers, family, friends…all that’s left is our individual selves and our souls.

Tough stuff…not the lightest questions to ponder going into the new year…but important, nonetheless.

Where do you stand?  If a loved one was going to write a book about you after you died, what would that person say?

Would that person be floundering for words, trying to figure out where you “landed” in the afterlife, or would there be a sure knowledge that you were in heaven, praising God with everything you had, anticipating that person’s own arrival one day?

Happy New Year to all of my bloggy friends and those of you who have never commented but either faithfully visit or got lucky enough (*cough, cough*) to land here today.

A Furry Baby Christmas

On Tuesday, my pups returned home, courtesy of the drop-off service my boarding facility provides (for a small fee, of course)…

They sure were glad to be home, as evidenced from the following pictures…

Poor Molly.  She’s not feeling too well and hasn’t eaten much since she got home.  She doesn’t do well, emotionally, when we board her, and eating the boarding facility’s food threw her belly for a loop, I’m afraid.

She’s become a big snuggler…grateful that her mama is home…

Ringing Out 2011 With the Hodgepodge

It’s hard to believe that this is the last Hodgepodge for 2011!  Thanks, Joyce, for a great year.  I’m looking forward to what you have in store for us in 2012!

1.  Share something you loved about your Christmas Day.

I loved watching the childlike joy that emanated from each person’s face, regardless of age, at the opening of each gift.  I think that gift opening strips from us the pretenses that age and experience can bring with them.  Instead, there’s anticipation of what lies beneath the ribbon and wraps.

2.  You get to put five items in a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what items would you choose and why?

Knitting Needles – To show that knitting was WAY COOL even in 2011
Sock Yarn – To show that yarn was WAY COOL even in 2011
Educational Psychology Book – To highlight how much educators “thought” they knew in 2011 (things are always changing, don’t you know)
A Smartphone – To show how archaic we were in 2011 as, I’m sure, technology will be out of this world in 2111.
The Bible – To share the message of Jesus, God’s Son, and to demonstrate that God never changes, no matter how much time passes.

3.  What do you like on a cracker?

Hmmm…I don’t eat crackers very often anymore.  I guess I’d have to say that I like to eat them with hummus, which is a vegan-friendly dip.

4.  Do you make resolutions at the start of a new year? How’d that work out for you this past year?

I’m not so good at making resolutions.  I typically forget about them.  I’ve got no idea if I made any for 2011.  I guess I could go back and see if I blogged about anything, but I’m feeling lazy.  I’m not going to make any for 2012 because I know I probably won’t be able to keep them.  I am going to strive to find some balance in my life, but I fear that will not come to fruition with teaching and upcoming reading endorsement certification classes (ten of them…oh joy).

5.  What’s a song or song lyric you’ll associate with 2011?

I love the song, Firework, by Katy Perry.  It’s what I danced to when I got the final approval on my last EPI (teaching certification program) assignment and was, after six months, finished.  Thus ended a very stressful half year, and I’ll never, ever forget the release of joy as I danced my way through that song, on the Wii, several times, alone in my house, tears streaming down my face.

6.  How will you ring in the new year?

I’ll probably be knitting and chatting online with KnittingHelp knitters.  Yes, I am a party animal.  Be jealous.

7.  What is something you look forward to in 2012?

I am looking forward to summer vacation, which will begin early in June.  That will mean that I survived my first year as a teacher in the public school system, and I’ll probably be 1/3 of the way through with my reading endorsement certification program.  I plan on sleeping through the first month of vacation.

Sad, eh?  LOL

8.  My Random Thought

Many of you have grown or nearly grown children and, thus, can identify with me when I say that it’s so wonderful to have both of my kids at home during the holiday.  After we got home from visiting the Mr.’s parents and my sister and her family, Chicky got a wild hair and decided to redecorate her room…a room that she doesn’t really spend much time in since she’s in college now.

First, we bought her a new comforter and sheets.

Then, she got Rooster to help her move the furniture around.

Her room went from looking like this…

To this…

One of her college friends is coming to visit for a few days, and I suspect that she wanted to de-kidify her room a bit, if that makes sense.

The sounds of discussion and laughter as she and Rooster moved things around made my heart swell with joy.

We have had an incredible Christmas.  Life with two nearly grown children is so much easier.  We all communicate well with each other.  Our laughter is based on years of shared memories that others outside of the family just wouldn’t get.

One of the questions above asked what we were looking forward to in 2012.  One of the things I’m dreading is Rooster leaving for college, and some of the laughter leaving with him.

Holidays will become even more important as the years go by.  This year gave me a glimpse into the future.

More Christmas Happenings

My, my, my, but time does seem to fly when you’re not having to make lesson plans and actually feel like your head is screwed on tightly!

I last blogged about my celebration with my mom.

Well, that afternoon, Coupon Queen admitted herself to the hospital.  She’d been having dizzy spells, and she thought her diverticulitis might be acting up.  So, off she went, and we started praying.

She didn’t go home that evening.  Grand Pooba returned to the house in the wee hours of the morning to retrieve her personal items because she’d been admitted into her own room.  We never heard a thing.

The next day, we took turns visiting her.  Chicky, Super Sis, and I ran to Walgreens, where everyone in Podunk, USA, was doing last-minute shopping, and picked up a set of lights, garland, and a musical animal.  We decorated her room and turned on the saxophone-wielding critter.

She smiled in delight, and the nurses chuckled softly when they entered at various times.

She got to go home later that afternoon, and we all did our thing, whatever that was (can hardly remember what exactly “that” entailed), and then we headed off to bed to await Santa.

I don’t know why, but I woke up at 3:19am and just could not go back to sleep.  My stomach wasn’t feeling great, and I was a little nervous that I’d caught my nephew’s bug, so I stayed in bed until 4 before finally giving up and arising.

I got myself all made up and then traveled downstairs, where I read for an hour before I started hearing people begin to stir upstairs.

It was finally time to find out what Santa had brought…

Chicky asked for that Bieber calendar, and yes, she’s almost twenty years old.  Go figure.

The kids seemed pleased with their gifts, and we waited for Super Sis’s family to arrive.

Coupon Queen had wrapped the presents with beautiful bows and ribbons, which made taking our time even more fun…

Tradition is that we take turns opening gifts, one at a time, beginning with the youngest person.  Everyone gets his or her time in the spotlight, and it’s a great way to thank each gift giver personally.

While one person opens, the rest of us wait…patiently…

Everyone seemed to really like their gifts.

I got a magenta colored purse, seven-cup food processor, and various other goodies.

Grand Pooba seemed to enjoy his BB gun, which Super Sis’s family got him to scare away adorable animals like this guy…

Yeah, yeah.  Don’t you dare post ugly comments.  First of all, I didn’t give that gift, and second of all, I yelled out to the squirrels, “Run, run for your lives!!”  I have witnesses.

After eating lunch, we headed over to Super Sis’s house to see what her family had gotten.  It was like walking into the aftermath of a tornado.  They’d opened gifts and run!

We visited for a while and headed back to the grandparents’ house for the evening.

I was doing a slow fade and headed to bed early.

It had been a wonderful Christmas!

Christmas Celebrations – Continued

Like most families, we celebrate Christmas…several times over.

Our second celebration took place in Small Town, Alabama, where the Mr.’s grandmother, Mama Dot, lives.  She’s a sprightly 96 year old who seemed to take great pleasure from our visit.

The Mr. had picked out this pair of earrings for her…

Chicky helped her put them on…

She seemed to like them and looked quite sporty with them on…

After spending a few hours with her, we headed back to Bigger City, Florida, and landed at the Mr.’s parents’ house, where they had prepared dinner for us.  Super Sis, Super D, and their children were there.

We pulled out the game that Chicky and Rooster had gotten for Christmas…

It’s called “Logo,” and it’s quite fun.  There are tons of questions about various types of logos.  It took a long time to play, and we finally had to call it quits.  I took the above picture so we could continue the game later.

Today (Friday), it was time for celebration #3…the one with my mom.

Last year’s get together had been a disaster, but Mom and I have recently started the hard work of repairing our relationship.

Today’s shindig was much merrier.

Super Sis always hosts, and she had prepared another great table of food…

Her decorations were lovely as well…

No tree would be complete without an Auburn ornament…or two…or three…

Rooster and Music Man (my nephew) distributed the gifts…

Some gifts were handled carefully…

I sat in anticipation as I waited for Mom to open her present.  I’d finally gotten in the Christmas spirit on Tuesday afternoon as I let the stress of work drain away.  I’d purchased this Ashton Nichole piece…

The company is owned by a local gal whose daughter is Rooster’s age and attends a local high school.  Her jewelry is GORGEOUS…made out of the ever popular Swarovski crystals.  Everything comes with a lifetime guarantee.

The blue stones are similar to Mom’s birthstone…sapphire.  Mom seemed quite pleased and proudly put it on…

Mom had surprises for us.

Super Sis and I got Christmas sweaters…

Here’s a closeup of my sweater…

Even Gracie, Super Sis’s sweet dog, got a gift…

All-in-all, it was a very good day.

That is until Coupon Queen had to go to the emergency room.

Please say a prayer for her.  She’s been feeling unwell for the last few days, and so far, the tests that have been run are inconclusive.  It stinks to be sick.  It’s even worse when it’s during the holidays.

Let’s pray that she’s feeling well enough to come home tomorrow (Christmas Eve) so we can celebrate Christmas with everyone present.

Bling!

Tonight, my family celebrated Christmas.

Yes, I know it’s early, but it became our tradition to do so years ago after we moved to South Florida.

I wanted to have time with just the four of us…time to open our gifts to one another since we always spent Christmas Eve and Christmas day at the Mr’s parents’ house.

So, that’s what we did.

Oh, Santa still filled the stockings and dropped off the main gifts at the in-law’s house.  That continues to this day.

We’re getting ready to hit the road for a short bit, so that’s why we celebrated this evening.

It’s amazing how much more fun Christmas becomes as children get older.

This year, all of us sat on chairs, as opposed to the floor.

We had the best time laughing as we took our time digging into our packages.

Chicky and Rooster gave each other Moe’s gift cards.

We gave the Mr. a Kindle Fire, case, and an Auburn Snuggie…

I, my dear friends, got something I’d longed for since August…

BLING!!!

The Mr. got me a pearl ring to replace the one I lost last summer.  He also got me Running Water Sorrelli.  The bracelet (above) is GORGEOUS, as are the earrings (below)…

We gave Rooster a CoolPix digital camera.  He’d mentioned, a few times, how he was the only person in the family without a camera, so when Best Buy had a sale on a bundled package, we took the opportunity to get him one.

Chicky’s big gift was a pair of boots she’d had her eye on for a while.

I think that every single one of us had a great time tonight.  I know that with each year that passes, I enjoy the time even more.  I know it won’t be long before the kids are on their own with their own families.  I’ll be happy for them as new traditions are created, but for now, I’ll enjoy the ones we have.

Ramblings

I’m feeling a little ADD with Christmas break right around the corner.

Hence, I bring to a few rambling thoughts and pictures.

That’s my main idea and supporting details umbrella.  The visual idea came from my friend, Barb.  I took the main idea my classes had pulled out from a reading passage, taped it to the top of the umbrella, and hung the supporting details from the spokes.  My students got spooked when I opened it inside the classroom.

I adopted two of my students for the duration of the basketball season.  On home game days, “moms” provide goodies to their “children.”  I decided to go with a Christmas theme and customized the stockings I bought at Walmart with both of my guys’ nicknames.  I’ll fill them tomorrow and present them during class.  What do you want to bet that they will be the only two guys toting stockings around school.

😀

My newest knitting project.  I’m using yarn I purchased last summer in Alaska.  Ahhhh…the bliss that accompanies the feel of merino and cashmere as it slides between your hands.

Chicky came home on Saturday.  She’d almost forgotten about her long-dreamed-about ring until I presented the box to her.

She smiled but held her breath as she put it on.  It was a perfect fit, and you could not have wiped the look of joy from her face.  She admitted, though, that although she’s planning on wearing it every day, it’s going to take some getting used to.  She’s not used to wearing nice jewelry on a daily basis.

I’m just glad she likes it.  🙂

Sherlock Holmes 2 – A Movie Review

It didn’t take us long to come up with a family activity after Chicky got home on Saturday.

There was some discussion about which movie we were going to see and wound up deciding on Sherlock Holmes:  A Game of Shadows.

Now, y’all know how I am about movies.

I don’t like cussing, and I don’t like sexual references and nudity.

What I do like is comedic relief, and this movie has TONS of it!

We were laughing from the opening scenes, and the laughter continued until the end.

There was a ton of action, which pleased the guys.

As a reading teacher and lover of words, I appreciated the advanced vocabulary and began thinking of ways to incorporate some of the context into my classroom.

Sad, eh?

With all of that said, I have to point out a few things I didn’t like.

First of all, the plot was complicated.  It took me a little while to catch on to what was going on.

Perhaps I’m just slow, or perhaps my brain is fried from being a new teacher.

The second thing that bothered me was the one scene that had a NAKED rear end.

And the scene went on and on.

At first, you only see half of the male’s rear, but then you’re treated (cough) to the full rear view.

The scene includes an actress, so I wasn’t thrilled about that either.  However, the scene was not overtly sexual in nature, if that makes sense.

I don’t recommend this movie for children below high school age.

I sincerely wonder how many high schoolers will really understand all of the dialogue in the movie.  They will, however, be able to follow the plot.  Kids multi-task quite well.

Ultimately, my family really enjoyed the movie.  It’s refreshing to see a sequel that is as good as the movie it follows.

Holiday Pampering

What does a mama do while she waits for her Chickie to get home from college?

Hmmm…it sure didn’t take me long to find something to keep me occupied…

It was even more fun when my friend, Barb, came with me. We had a wonderful time…ate lunch before heading to the nail salon.

She chose to get her toes done.

Mine were not in good shape, so I opted for the fingernails…asking the sweet little girl to add a decoration…

The polish is “Dear Santa” by OPI.  It has sparkles in it.  It’s no surprise that Barb quickly gravitated to it!

Yes, you’re also seeing a jewel in the middle.

Look at me and my fancy self.

Don’t be a hater.

Go pamper YOURSELF before indulging in other holiday fun.

Gifts for a Baby

My friend, Kim, decided to have a baby.

Well, actually, God decided to bless her with her fourth child.

As soon as I found out, I purchased yarn and got to work.

The work was slow.

The pattern was, initially, tedious.

My teaching responsibilities often interrupted my progress.

And then something happened.

I finally “saw” the pattern in my mind…”got” it, if you will.  If you’re a knitter, you understand what I’m saying.

Then, the knitting began to fly.

Before long, I had a finished product…

Priceless Diamonds Baby Blanket…

The pattern is in the Leisure Arts #3219 book.

I completed twenty pattern repeats and added 44 tassels on each end…

The yarn is Loops and Threads Snuggly Wuggly Sport.  I used 2.5 skeins on size 5 needles.

I have made or worked on more blankets than I can remember.  This is, by far, my favorite one thus far.  After I blocked the blanket (it’s acrylic, but those diamonds needed to be stretched out to show them off better), the blanket had a beautiful drape to it.

I’m going to have to tuck this pattern away.  In a few years, I’m going to make another one.

Now, the fun in gift giving is in surprising people.

Kim had messaged me on Facebook and asked if I would make her baby a hat.  She had seen a pattern that she liked.  It was, however, crochet.  I’m not very good at crocheting, so I found a knitted pattern that was very similar in style.  She liked it and requested a brown and blue version.

I went with the Big Wool Little Hat pattern, a free download on Ravelry.  I used Lion Brand Wool Easy Thick and Quick in Wood and Sky Blue.  My needle was size 13.

This pattern originally had long, braided tassels hanging from each ear flap, but I decided not to make them.  I was concerned that they would be a choking hazard.

One other thing I decided to do was make the toddler version.  I had read that the infant size was too small, and Kim’s baby, who was by then out of the “oven” had weighed in at over nine pounds,

The only thing I didn’t like about this pattern is that it was knit flat.  I suppose that I could have knit it in the round, but I didn’t feel like thinking too hard.  So, I went with it.

It was a quick knit, as promised, and I finished in two hours.

Fun stuff, I tell you!

The pictures really do not do this hat justice.

I gifted both items yesterday.  I had to leave the wrapped package on Kim porch.  She and I were like strangers passing in the night…both of us had crazy schedules.

The text she sent me after she got home indicated that she was touched by my generosity.

It truly is an honor to make things for people.  I often get told that I should sell my knitting, but that would take the fun out of it.  I knit for people I care about.  That’s where the payoff comes.
