You Have Questions? I Have Answers

Today, I am giving a test.

When you teach, you can expect questions…especially before the test has “officially” started.

You can try to anticipate every single question a student might pose, but in the end, there will ALWAYS be questions.

This usually happens because students ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION while you are giving instructions the first time.

This also happens because students DO NOT PAY ATTENTION to the carefully typed out instructions posted on the SMARTBOARD!!!

Ugh.

It is one of the most aggravating parts of teaching.

One would think that high school students would have fewer questions.

Let me address that fallacy.

THEY DO NOT!

I cannot even imagine administering a test to an elementary student…which is why I am better off teaching high school.

Today, instead of answering questions the normal way, I have decided to do the following…

Yes, I realize that you are probably cringing right now.

It’s okay.  I would be too if I was reading this on YOUR blog.

Just the thought of a 44 year old woman doing interpretive dance…in the middle of a classroom…sends shivers down my spine.

Oh wait.

I am that woman.

Heehee

Please consider this a warning that if you suddenly see “AuburnChick’s Interpretive Dancing” trending on social media, it will be me, trying to make a point.

I suspect that my teenagers will need to have eye surgery to remove the images burned into their brains.

I doubt that So You Think You Can Dance will be calling.

Let’s Dance

Last Saturday, we loaded up the family and headed out for a little adventure…

Our first dance recital.

Let me stop you before you start thinking that Chicky has taken up dance.

She hasn’t.

Now that Dancing Girl has joined our little family, we are now being treated to all things girlie.

Chicky’s been a tomboy most of her life, so my experience with watching girls get all dolled up is nil.

Thankfully, I’ve been a fan of such shows as Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance.  The latter, especially, prepared me well for Saturday’s dance recital.

The curtain went up at 7pm.

We didn’t get out of there until 10.

Chicky sat to my left, and Rooster sat to my right.

I watched them out of the corner of my eyes.

They sat, enthralled, as the lights went on for each dance number.

Because we live in Podunk, USA, we knew a lot of girls in the recital.  Small towns work that way, you know.  Everyone knows everyone.

Our youth pastor’s daughters were in the show.  The youngest one was in several numbers, including the one below…

I loved watching the various ballet, tap, and jazz routines.  My favorites, though, were the lyrical dances.

There is something so honest about lyrical and contemporary dances.  They are true expressions of emotion.  I really wish I had this outlet to express myself, but alas, we’re all gifted in different ways.

Probably the most amazing thing to witness was the grace in which each girl moved.  Every movement had been practiced for hours, and it showed…even in the placement of their hands and, even, their fingers.

Dancing Girl came off of the stage at the end with a warm glow on her face.  Of course, that could have been because Rooster was waiting to greet her.

It was a wonderful night, and it made me look forward to the new season of So You Think You Can Dance.

Perhaps I’ll be dancing along…in the privacy of my home…no recital necessary.

Dancing for God

Something has been bugging me for almost a week, and I finally decided to blog about it.

I really enjoy watching So You Think You Can Dance.  Over the last five years, I have developed a keen appreciation for many styles of dance…especially contemporary, which allows dancers to vividly express their deepest emotions.

Last week’s episode featured Thomas Hamilton’s audition…

Isn’t he a fabulous dancer?

So, why am I upset, you might wonder.

Well, quite frankly, I was dismayed at Nigel’s response to the way Thomas worshipped God through his dance.  Nigel went so far as to suppose himself an expert at what audiences would be turned off by.

I have always enjoyed Nigel’s comments.  His sarcasm makes me laugh, and I give him a lot of credit for his knowledge of dance.

However, his words really ruffled my feathers, and my opinion of him is much lower now.

For someone who embraces all forms of dance, Nigel showed how close-minded he can be toward religion.

As an avid viewer, I found Thomas’ dance moving, sincere, and – most of all – heartfelt.

Thomas danced a dance of gratitude for THE God (not a “higher power”) who had delivered him from a wretched life.

I would be more likely to watch and vote for a dancer like this than one who gyrates for no reason at all except to see his or her body jiggle in certain directions.
