College Football and Knitting

Can I tell you how happy I am now that football season has begun?

I am a huge college football fan.

Rooster created a group on ESPN’s College Pick ‘Em site.  Each week, the Mr., Rooster, and I make our picks and eagerly await the results.

It makes each Saturday a lot more fun because I now have a vested interest in the results.

I haven’t done so well this year, but it’s been fun all the same.

Sometimes, I pick for upsets, and sometimes I go with the flow and pick the teams favored to win.

The thing I enjoy most about college football Saturdays is the relaxed atmosphere around the house.  We’ll usually open the windows, because the weather has gotten cooler, eat “football” food, and just chill out.

It makes for great days of knitting.

On Friday, I learned that my friend, the Attendance Lady, has a birthday coming up.  So, I printed a couple of Joann’s coupons and headed out to buy some yarn.

I quickly churned out two Spa Cloths (Creative Knitting, January 2008).  I used Yellow and Cornflower Sugar ‘n Cream.  The cloths are blocking right now.

When they are dry, I’ll package them up with one of the candles I purchased a couple of weeks ago.

You’ve just gotta love the Fall and all of the activities it brings!

My Week in Pictures

I spent most of the week in bed, recovering from a cold.  So, I didn’t take too many pictures from the week.  I sincerely doubt that you would get much of a thrill from looking at kleenex boxes and used tissues.  Blech.

Here’s what I did manage to capture…

I finally turned the heel of my newest sock. I hope to start on #2 next week.

I finally turned the heel of my newest sock. Can you guess which pattern it is?

Cutting it Close

Knitting can be a nail-biting experience sometimes.

Have you ever been working on something and realized that you might just run out of yarn before the end?

This happened to me last night while knitting a pair of Lacy Rib Baby Socks to accompany the hat I made Knit for Hope.

I finished the hat a few days ago.  It’s a super-easy pattern that you can find here.  It took 20 grams of yarn using size 6 needles.

I used Plymouth Dreambaby DK (color #205).  It is 50% acrylic and 50% nylon…soft and stretchy…

Each skein has 50 grams (183 yards) of yarn.  It’s not a lot, but certainly enough to make a couple of projects.  I had 30 grams left when I finished the hat…just enough for the baby socks.

So I cast on, using a free pattern found here (direct download) or go here if you want to browse the designer’s other patterns.  I decided to use size 4 needles.

The pattern is easy to memorize, and the lacy design is really very pretty.  The sprinkling of colors hides the design a bit in my photos.

I’m considering converting this pattern to an adult-sized sock.  I think it would be gorgeous in a solid yarn.

What a nervous wreck I was!  I got the first sock done, weighed it on my postage scale, and realized that I would have just enough yarn to finish the other sock.

So I cast on and prayed.  There was no way I wanted to get near the end and come up short.  I did knit a little tighter.  I think this was the key to finishing up.

At the end, I had less than five grams of yarn left…

All-in-all, I’m pleased.

The set is just adorable and will keep a little head and set of toes warm…

Traffic Jams, Soccer, and Knitting

It’s another weekend, and guess what I’m doing?

Sitting in a hotel after a day spent on the soccer fields.

We drove to Jacksonville after school on Friday.  We moved right along until a few miles outside of town, where we hit a major traffic snafu…

Ugh…what a mess!  We checked the GPS and saw that there were actually two areas of congestion…at 9:30 at night!  I like my roads to be in good shape, but this was the second weekend in a row of encountering heavy traffic!

After sitting in a near-motionless state for an hour, we finally managed to creep our way to the next exit, where we mercifully got off.  The GPS decided not to play jokes on me (unlike last weekend) and got us around this traffic via a neat little detour.

My favorite part of the trip is going over the bridge and seeing the lights on the buildings and other bridges…

We were relieved to reach our hotel and crawled wearily into bed.

Of course, now that soccer season has officially begun, sleeping in on weekends has gone by the wayside.  I was up at the crack of dawn to hit Target for some items I had forgotten to pack.

Don’t ask.

Just remember that I am AuburnChick.  There is no Easy Button for me.

Chicky’s team was scheduled to play at 9, and I thought it would be a pleasant morning.  I mean, I had my knitting…

That’s my latest mini-project…a baby hat for charity.  I’ll post more information about it after I finish.

The temperatures quickly climbed, and it didn’t take long until I had to put the yarn away.  Have you ever tried to knit when your hands were sweaty?  Not a pretty thing, let me tell you.

We cheered hard, and Chicky’s team won.

One downer was that one of Chicky’s teammate went down with an injury.  We are concerned that she tore her ACL.  The worst part about this incident is that the same girl tore her other ACL a year and a half ago and was just getting back into prime form.

Please say a prayer for her.

Between games, I ran to KnitWitz, a wonderful store located about ten miles from the hotel we were staying at.

I was crunched for time, so when I ran in, I blabbed quickly, looked around even faster, and grabbed up these delicious skeins of yarn…

The Berroco is identical to the skein I’m using for my current sock project.  I am growing concerned about yardage since the pattern I’m using has mega cabling in it.

I also picked out this…

As soon as I saw the colors, I fell in love with it.  The thing that pushed me over the edge with it was the softness.  Oh my gosh!  I cannot wait for this stuff to be on my feet!!

I made it back to the hotel just in time to take Chicky back to the fields for game #2.  Her team lost.  It was a scorcher, and the girls’ legs were done after the first game.  The opponent was playing its first game and looked much fresher.

At least we didn’t have any injuries this game.

After a delicious dinner at Carrabbas, we’ve settled back into our room.  We’re about to hit the sack and rest up for tomorrow’s game.

Pre-Game Rituals

Every athlete has a ritual he/she performs before a game.

The parents are no different.  We either busy ourselves with filling coolers with ice or caffeinate ourselves with Starbucks.

I have developed a unique pre-game ritual.

I go yarn shopping.

Because all of our games are played out-of-town, I have had many opportunities to find new yarn shops.

This weekend, Chicky and I are in South Carolina.  We left Friday for our nine-hour drive with one of Chicky’s teammates riding along.

Now, you’d think that after playing travel soccer for over ten years, Chicky would have this packing thing down pat.

Think again.

When we got to Chicky’s teammate’s house, I offhandedly asked if Chicky had packed her soccer bag.

She said, “Hmmm” before her eyes got big.

She had left it at home.

Thank goodness I asked!

We drove the ten minutes back to the house and found it waiting patiently in the garage, right where she had put it.

Lovely start to the weekend, eh?  We wound up leaving 45 minutes behind schedule.

The delay was a sign of things to come.

After hitting the highway, we saw this…

Construction.

More delays.

For lunch, the girls decided they wanted Chick-fil-A.  The GPS first took us to a hospital.  Maybe the employees can buy Chick-fil-A sandwiches there?  I don’t know.

We managed to get the GPS to lead us to another location…the mall…

No shopping allowed though!  We went straight in, grabbed our stuff to-go, and left.

We encountered more construction…forcing us to go 45 miles per hour.

I must have been the only person who read the traffic signs.  Everybody passed me, including an old man who honked.

Sometimes you fly solo when you follow the law (I’ve learned this as a Christian as well).

The rest of our trip proceeded without any more delays.  We eagerly watched the signs that told us how much farther…

Nine and a half hours later, we arrived at our destination…Columbia, South Carolina.

At least the weather was clear and sunny.  Perfect for the drive…

We were very pleased with the hotel and its proximity to great shopping and yummy eating.

This morning we arose at a decent hour…ready for a busy day.

First things first…dropping off the girls at the mall…

And then my pre-game ritual…yarn shopping!!

I only planned on visiting one store, although I had mapped the locations of two.

The first one wasn’t open when I got there…

So I headed to the other store…

This store was located in a beautiful section of downtown Columbia, and I had high hopes.

However, it was a little small, and the assortment of yarn just wasn’t for me.  The owner had lots of Noro, which I like but wasn’t in the mood for, and lots of another brand that I can’t remember.  But nothing hollered out my name, so I left without buying anything.

The girls and I had a quick chat on the phone, and we arranged for a later pickup than originally planned.

I was thrilled because I had an extra thirty minutes to shop.

Guess where I went?

Back to the first shop.

Now, I’ll admit that I really didn’t think there would be much in the store.  It was not located in the quaintest of areas.

Folks, do not judge a store by its location.

When I walked in, look at what I saw…

And…

And…

And…

The owner was sooo friendly, putting me right at ease and giving me time to love on her yarn.

Two yarns leapt into my arms, begging to be taken home.  I’ve got a soft spot for sock yarn, so I didn’t say no…

Oh boy, I could have stayed in that store for a long time, but I had to go pick up the girls.

We had to get lunch…my favorite…

And one more stop for my pre-game ritual…

One of the biggest Michaels Ive ever been in!

One of the biggest Michael's I've ever been in!

I didn’t buy anything at Michael’s, being a good girl for once.

And then it was time to head for the game…

More on that tomorrow or Monday.

Star Struck

Ok…so I didn’t get to go to Sock Summit.

If you’re not a knitter, let me explain what Sock Summit was.

It was probably one of the most fantastic knitting get-togethers ever.  Think of it like a Woodstock for knitters.

You know how much I love knitting socks…so I would have loved to have attended.

But I had a couple of problems…

1)  No money

2) No job to make money

So, I stayed home, turned a bit green every time I read about someone else’s brush with this or that famous designer, and knit my own pair of socks all by my lonely self.

I also consoled myself by reading the blogs of some of these designers.

I even posted a couple of comments.  I tend to be a little shy, but when I see something that strikes my fancy, I like to say a little something.

And you know what?

Two of the ladies emailed me after I commented!

The first person was Anne, who writes KnitSpot.

And she didn’t send me just one email.  I think she sent me three!!

Take a look at her blog and join me in ooohhhing and aaaahhhhing over her incredible shawls.  Her photography is incredible.

The next shock came tonight.

I was doing my “mom” thing…

No…not cooking dinner…

I was at the high school, handing out schedules at the Freshmen Orientation.

During a lull in the action, my phone vibrated.  I had an email.

Upon opening it, I discovered the sender’s name…

Are you ready?

It was…

Cookie A

I almost fell out of my chair.

Remember the red socks I just finished?

That was Cookie’s pattern!

And I’ve got a little something new “cooking” on my needles, if you get my drift.

I tried to explain to the volunteer sitting beside me why I was picking up my jaw from the table.

I’m not sure if she got it.

If you’re into fibery crafts, you understand.

Both of these ladies’ responses were personal and very sweet.  It was cool to find out that they do really pay attention to the people who comment on their blogs.

It was probably a good thing that I didn’t make it to Sock Summit.  I would have returned home with a serious case of dry eye syndrome from not being able to blink…afraid to miss a glimpse of a famous knitter.

Throwing Down the Gauntlet

First, a definition of the phrase, courtesy of YourDictionary.com:

This expression alludes to the medieval practice of a knight throwing down his gauntlet, or metal glove, as a challenge to combat. Its figurative use dates from the second half of the 1700s, as does the less frequently heard take up the gauntlet, for accepting a challenge.

Now, I’m not exactly challenging you to do battle.  Not in a negative sense, that is.

Think red…green…Christmas colors…

These are the five stockings I’ve finished thus far ever since reading about a special project on Dustina’s blog.

You might remember that last year, I knit up a bunch of mini stockings that were part of a larger effort for the troops.

Dustina worked on that project as well and decided to adopt it as her own grass-roots effort for local children who will not get much for Christmas.

I think that this will be a tough holiday season for a lot of people.

Maybe you’ve never made a pair of socks, and the thought scares you to death.

Let me encourage you by saying that this small stocking pattern is PERFECT for you!  By using worsted weight yarn, the project flies right off of your needles.  The instructions are very easy to understand.  She wrote them for two magic loop/two circulars and double-pointed needles.

I am using leftover yarn from last year’s stocking project.  This project requires very little, so if you only have one skein, you can probably crank out three or four easy.  Probably more.

Now…the challenge.

Would you be willing to knit ten of them?  If ten of my readers (do I have this many readers, by the way?) were to knit ten, then that’s 100 stockings!  I have a goal for myself, which I don’t want to share because I’ll feel badly if I don’t meet it.  It’s more than ten though.  So, added to my amount, we can put a dent in her goal of getting 1,000 made.

Please, visit her blog and read more about it.  She will accept fabric stockings as well, so if you’re handy with a sewing machine or needle and thread, this might be just your thing.
