Juice Fast – 2014

All summer, I’d planned to do my annual juice fast, but things kept coming up…Chicky’s visit in June…my trip to Disney in July…feeling icky after we got back.

Sigh.

I could have just forgotten about it, but I really like the health benefits and trimmer figure I have when I’m finished.  I plan on jumping back into a stricter Daniel Fast eating regime when I’m finished with my fast.

The Mr. bought a few of my supplies yesterday, and I got to juicing.  First up was my apple/orange/pineapple juice.  Yum!

I cleaned up my juicer and prepared carrot juice…

Today, I headed to Sam’s Club to buy additional produce.  I’d been perusing my SuperJuiceMe app and had found some new recipes that I wanted to try.

$51 later, I was walking out of the store.  Sheesh, but this stuff adds up!!

I ran back to Publix to pick up a 25lb bag of carrots.  While I was there, I also bought beets.  Ugh.  Beets.  I do not like them, let me tell you, and I never ever made my children eat them.  One of the recipes called for it, though, and I’d read a lot of good things about this vegetable, so into my shopping cart they went…

The first new-to-me juice I made was a Ginger Shot.  I watched the video on my app because I had never used fresh ginger before and had no idea how to prepare it.  The juice was a fast one to make…

As you can probably surmise from the bottom right photo, I was not used to the strong ginger taste.  Wowsa!

The next drink I tried was the “Breath of Fresh Air.”  It was actually very good, even with the ginger.  The only ingredient missing was fresh mint.  I’ll make sure to buy some in the next few days.

So far, I’m feeling okay.  I had a headache all day, which I know is a sign of my body detoxing, and finally took Tylenol after reading that it was better than taking Excedrin (no caffeine in Tylenol).

My goal is to do two weeks, but I’d really like to stretch it to three this year.  We’ll see.  The Mr. isn’t keen on my fasts because he worries about me.  I feel so good when I’m on them that it’s hard to get off.  With the start of school next week, though, it’s going to be especially challenging to maintain, so we shall see if I make it to twenty one days.

Juice Fast 2013

If you’ve been reading my blog for longer than a year, you might remember that I am all about nutrition.  I especially enjoy challenging myself with annual juice fasts.

I had planned to do my fast during Spring Break.  That plan did not materialize.  Then, I’d planned to do the juice fast a couple of weeks ago, but again, my plans changed with the arrival of my chicklets.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you have to be in the right frame of mind going into a fast.  If you’re not, you are going to be resentful the entire time.  I had one fast like that, and I wound up coming off of it early.

Now, why would I, at 5’3″ (on my tiptoes) and between 105 and 110 pounds want to fast?

Well, first of all, my belly has accrued what I like to call Soda Pop Fat.

As a vegan, I don’t eat meat or anything else produced by an animal.

I don’t, in fact, eat a whole lot.

My weakness is Mt. Dew.  I’ve also taken to enjoying a Coca Cola.

In fact, visiting convenience stores is fun.

Folks, when your children leave for college, you’ve got to get your jollies where you can.  😀

Such indulgences lead to a little bit of extra skin around the middle, and when you’re small in stature, it is easier to spot.

So, that’s one reason why I wanted to do the fast.

A second reason for doing the fast is that I’m not a fan of allowing things to control me.  Fasting provides me with a time of focusing my energy on kicking bad habits.  I like the discipline of fighting my physical and emotional needs because, in reality, the body does not need a whole lot of food to survive.

With all of that in mind, I headed to Sams and purchased my produce.  I had to run by Publix when I couldn’t find the big bag of carrots I was looking for…

When I got home, I fired up the juicer and made my apple/orange/pineapple juice.  You can find the how-to information in this post.

Chicky’s allergies have been acting up, so I wanted to give her mega doses of Vitamin C.  I made extra so we would both be happy…

I then spent over an hour prepping my vegetables.  Doing this saves oodles of time when the juicing begins.

I took a couple of hours off and then got up and made two glasses of carrot juice.

The body can only efficiently use eight ounces of juice at a time, so I put the other glass away for an hour.  It’s important not to make too much ahead of time because freshly made juice quickly loses its live enzymes…which is the whole purpose for juicing.

I have a goal for this year’s fast.  I’d like to go longer than in the past.  We shall see.  The hardest days are the first three and the last couple…especially when I know that I’m about to end a fast.  Of course, it’s also very difficult to begin eating again, so I get stuck in a vicious emotional cycle that’s completely different from the one I battle about not eating.

Ultimately, I am excited to be getting this year’s fast underway.

I’m looking forward to my abs reappearing and a clarity of mind taking over.

Think I’ll drink my second glass of carrot juice to that!

Juicing, FCAT’ing, and PMS’ing

Wow.

What a crazy start to the week!

I’ve been contemplating a “reset” to rid my body of the Mt. Dew addiction I’ve acquired over the last few months.  I’m still eating a vegan diet, and, for the most part, I’m sticking to it very well.  I rarely, if ever, eat dessert, but the Mt. Dew thing is getting out of control.  I’ve also noticed that I haven’t been eating much fresh fruit and vegetables.  What I’ve been eating?  Veggie burgers from Burger King (minus the mayo), veggie sandwiches from Panera, and black bean burgers from Chili’s, to name a few dishes.

Ultimately, I just haven’t been feeling as comfortable in my own skin as I did last summer.

Hence, my decision to embark on another ten-day juice fast.

I started on Saturday.

But I made a big mistake.

I didn’t prepare ahead of time.

I didn’t buy the fruits and vegetables that I needed for my juice.

So, I drank water all day.

No biggie, I thought.

Until Sunday, when I got out of bed and thought I was going to pass out.  My heart started racing.

I was in trouble.

The Mr. and Rooster had gone to church, so I made my way to the porch and sat there for a while, watching the dogs play in the yard.

After the Mr. got home, I asked him to buy me orange juice and the fruits and veggies I needed.

I think my blood sugar level had gotten too low, so I needed to quickly pump it up so I could stand for longer periods of time.

Normally I do not drink store-bought OJ.  It loses its nutrition in the pasteurization process.

Plus, the sugars are just too high.

Still, I needed to do what I needed to do.

I wound up spending Sunday on the couch.  I just was not feeling well…dealing also with feminine symptoms.

Can someone please say MENOPAUSE or HYSTERECTOMY?

Oy.

On Monday, Florida students began taking the FCAT.  I have to proctor all week.

It’s a nervous time for the students and teachers…especially Reading teachers such as myself.  We spend eight months strengthening the skills that will ultimately be measured through this test.

It was a rough few hours for me.  Physically, I was hurting from my feminine symptoms.  I was also tired, despite going to bed early last night.  When you fast, the first few days are the worst.  Afterward, there’s an energy burst that you don’t get from anything else.  I think I hit a wall today.

So, if I’m a little quiet this week, you’ll know why.

I’m dealing with the big 3’s.

Don’t be jealous.  It doesn’t become you.

😀

Hodgepodge – 44th Edition

It’s time for the Wednesday Hodgepodge!

Head on over to Joyce’s corner of the world and see how others answered the questions!

1.  What do you do at the first sign of a cold?  Will you get a flu shot this year?

I usually start taking Airborne, which has a bunch of Vitamin C.  I also make apple/orange/pineapple juice.  I have a juicer, so the juice is fresh and ripe with “real” vitamins.  My “how-to’s” on making the juice are located here.  I have never gotten a flu shot.  I’m petrified of needles.

2.  What advice can you give about how to conquer fear?

I think that to conquer fear, one must constantly be in prayer.  We have to remember that God is bigger than our fears, and that He never allows anything into our lives that isn’t part of His plan.  Remembering these things can help us face our fears head-on, knowing that we already have victory in Jesus Christ, who faced the ultimate fear of all…separation from God.  If He can do that, we can do anything!

3.  Share two good things about your life right now.

Only two, Joyce?  Sheesh.  Guess you didn’t want us all writing novels, eh?  😀

First of all, the Mr. and I are getting along better.  This is a very big deal as our marriage has been rocky for a number of years.  I’ve had a few friends who have lost their husbands through marital difficulties or sickness.  These things made me realize how precious my own marriage is.

The second thing that’s great about my life right now is my new job in the public school system.  In fact, my official paperwork just got processed, and my ID badge no longer says “Substitute” but “Teacher.”  I am happy as can be!  This has been six long years in the making!

4.  A hot fall fashion trend in 2011 is a return to sixties style…tunics with pants, shift dresses, pencil skirts, cinched waists, bold prints, high necklines, and short lengths to name a few.  How does this fashion trend fit with your wardrobe and personal sense of style?

Oh, I am loving the return of the flowing shirts and skirts!  The trend is suiting me just fine, thank you very much.  The styles are comfortable and enhance my body type.  I love it!

5.  Were you involved in scouting as a kid?  How about as an adult?

I was a Brownie.  I still have my outfit in the closet.  I don’t remember too much about it except for one or two afternoons at people’s houses and some sort of initiation ceremony.  The Girl Scouts looked so big because they were older than me!  As a mom, I have not been involved with scouting.  My children never expressed an interest.

6.  Apple, pear, plum, pumpkin…your favorite fall flavor?

Apple…definitely!  The smell of cooked apples and cinnamon makes me feel all warm and happy inside though!

7.  What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher?

GREAT timing, Joyce!  This is my second year as a teacher, and I have a daughter in her second year of college and a son who’s a senior in high school.  I’ve definitely got an opinion or two about this topic.  I think that a teacher must know his/her subject content as well as the different learning styles that her students possess.  A teacher must not be afraid to adapt teaching to meet individual needs.  Gone are the days when teachers lectured while students took notes.  This is not effective, and students get bored.  Students need to be more interactive in their learning.  This helps them take ownership of it.

At the same time, teachers must be sensitive to the personal issues going on in their students’ lives.  We must be compassionate.  We must find ways to connect with our students.  As teachers, we are role models, whether we want to be or not.  We have the potential to leave a great impression (good or bad) on the students we teach.  It’s vitally important that we teach them how to be responsible social beings as well as academic ones.

8.  My Random Thought

My replacement phone came in yesterday afternoon…less than a day after I filed an insurance claim.  Fortunately, I still had my messed up phone, which was ugly but still worked.  On the way home, I stopped at the Sprint store and bought an Otter Box.  Obviously I did not learn a lesson via my children when they dropped and cracked, to pieces, their own phones last summer.  Lesson learned…at a hefty price.

Do As I Say, Not As I Do

When going off of a juice fast, DO NOT eat your first meal at Steak & Shake.

Nuff said?? I didn’t think so.

As I said in my previous post, going out of town this weekend was extremely difficult on the psychological aspect of fasting. When you go out of town, you naturally expect to eat out.

Sunday, after we left the last training session, Soccer Chick and I headed home. I was hungry. I finally decided that since it was the tenth day of my fast, I could stop. I had originally planned on doing it for ten days anyhow. So, I got the younger Chick to pull my pineapple from the cooler. I had a plastic fork on hand, so I dug in. After about five bites, I could feel my stomach working. Amazing. It wasn’t the best feeling, but I knew it was going to happen eventually.

From there, it was like the floodgates had been opened. I started thinking about cheese fries. Yep, weird, but that’s what I wanted. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted them. It became a fixation.

“Soccer Chick, are you hungry yet?”

“No, Mama, I’m not. Let’s go further before stopping.”

Fifteen minutes later…

“Soccer Chick, are you hungry yet?”

“No, Mama…drive on.”

Grrr…

We stopped to pee, and I think that stretching out her body helped her realize that she did, in fact, have an empty stomach.

“Mama, I’m hungry now.”

Great. Only an hour and a half until the next real city. THE city that had the cheese fries that I just HAD TO HAVE.

We finally got there, and I eagerly ordered a chicken sandwich and those wonderful fries…to go. Can you believe that I almost left without them? I remembered to check the bag and realized that they forgot to put them in. Back into the place I go for my fries. Must satisfy the craving, you know.

I get myself settled, spread the cheese over them, and am in heaven.

For about ten minutes.

Uh oh. I realize, very quickly, that I’ve made a terrible mistake. I’ve eaten half of my sandwich and about one-third of the fries. I feel a knot in my middle. And there it sits, not moving.

Two more hours to drive. The knot stayed there the entire way.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I know better. Raw foods for three days while still juicing…to allow your body to slowly acclimate to eating and digesting again.

Sigh…

I cannot believe that I displayed such willpower for ten days and then totally blew it like that.

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking I was going to be sick. The grease got to me. Fortunately, I managed to go back to sleep without getting out of bed. But, I went through most of the day with that heavy feeling in my tummy.

So, I thought I would go back on the juice fast for a few more days…get things cleaned out and start back like I’m supposed to. I drank water the entire day.

Darn…I needed groceries, and Soccer Chick drove me. She’s getting her drivers license in a couple of weeks and needs the practice.

Why oh why did the store have to put Cheez Its on sale? Buy One Get One Free. We got through with our shopping and couldn’t get into those boxes fast enough.

The funny thing about juicing is that when you start eating again, things taste weird. I think that you actually taste things like they really are. Those Cheez Its tasted like cardboard. Younger Chick thought they were heavenly. Not me. But the few I had were enough to give me that bad feeling in my tummy. I munched on a bit of fresh pineapple when we got home, which worked its magic on my innards.

Finally, I started feeling like my old self. I had a small plate of dinner and am awaiting the results. I’m not used to my stomach being full. I think it shrank during the fast. Good. I’m going to keep up with the small meals and make up some juice tomorrow — try to keep my body on the healthy track I put it on.

So, the moral of the story is Do As I Say and Not As I Do.

In the knitting realm, this weekend proved productive. I finished two projects…the blanket and the chemo cap for my friend.

I received another blanket in the mail today…Jewelry Box. I need to pick my yarn and stitch and get working!

Oh yeah, and I received this in the mail today…

It was hand spun for me by KnittingHelp.com buddy.  It really is pretty!  I can’t wait to find the perfect project for it.

AuburnChick is Frustrated

Yep…I’m frustrated. I’m frustrated with a knitting project, and I’m frustrated with the juice fasting.

First, the juice fasting. All is going well. I’m almost done with Day 8, and I’m feeling a little better each day. I blew my nose very few times today, and I’m coughing fairly infrequently as well. I believe the juice is doing its job, albeit slowly. However, I have a feeling that the virus I’ve had has delayed the start of any real detoxification. Of course, the expelling of “stuff” from my nose and mouth might be a sign of detox. These cavities were designed for just such a purpose.

However, I’m finding that this is starting to become an emotional battle. One of the lessons I learned the last time I fasted was that food is an emotional crutch. We really do not need nearly as much food as we think we do. We can be lured simply by the idea of eating something. This is where I’m starting to struggle.

This morning found me completely, unexpectedly, rearranging my weekend plans. Mr. AuburnChick had to work today. Soccer Chick has soccer training in central Florida, and he had planned on driving her. I had planned on working from home to get her to another father who was going to drive her down with the Mr. meeting up with her later tonight. The Mr’s job assignment got pushed later than originally planned, so we decided that I would go instead. This totally made me happy because I got out of work for the day, thanks to a very understanding supervisor.

However, reality quickly set in. With only one hour to plan, shower, and pack, I went nuts. Plus, how in the world was I going to continue my juice fast? No problem, I’ll bring everything with me. Oh, and I couldn’t forget my knitting either. Here’s one pile of stuff that was waiting to be packed…

That’s my clothes, knitting bag (the blue one), laptop bag, and a couple of other things…1/10th of what needed to be put in the car. While my laptop was downloading the newest podcasts from my favorite shows (I figured it would be a good time to catch up during the drive), Soccer Chick grumpily helped me pack my produce in the cooler. I gathered all of my juicing tools. That stuff alone took up almost half of the back of the car.

After eight hours in the car, and having only drank a couple of bottles of water, I started getting grumpy. It didn’t help that we stopped at a Beef O’Brady’s on the way. We have one at home, and it’s one of my favorite places to eat. I absolutely love buffalo chicken wings with Ranch dressing. I ordered my glass of water with a determined look on my face. Fortunately, work interfered to distract me. While the girls were eating (we’re taking another player and was following another gal and her dad), I pulled out the laptop and checked in with work. I discovered a problem there that required a few phone calls. I stepped outside and finished up just as the girls finished eating. Perfect timing. I didn’t have to sit and watch them eat.

We finally got to our hotel, and I realized that I needed a few things from the grocery store. “Mama, please stop at Outback to pick us up something for dinner,” Soccer Chick asks.

Great.

I love blooming onions.

Sigh.

I started thinking about food. I had not had my juice yet, and all I wanted was a basket of chips and salsa from the Chili’s I saw across the street.

As soon as I got back to the room, I made my juice. This is a first for me. Juicing on the road. Fortunately, it went quickly, the girls had some apple/orange/pineapple juice, and I even got two glasses of carrot juice made.

So, I’m really fighting this from a mental standpoint, not a physical one.

Knitting-wise, I’m also frustrated. I received this Oddball Baby Blanket in the mail last week.

It’s called Racecar Alley. I’m working on the red portion at the top. The frustration is that I cannot find a good pattern for my four inches. I’ve tried being creative, but nothing is coming to mind. I found a NASCAR logo on the internet, and I’m trying to knit it, but it’s just not looking right, so I’m going to frog this.

I usually love working on these blankets, but this one has me stumped. I want it to be cute.

Grrr…

I’ll probably just do this in garter stitch and send it on its way.

Meanwhile, I started another chemo cap. This one will be for my daughter’s friend’s mom. She started chemo this week and thought she might fare well…until her second day. She’s been feeling poorly the last few days, and I fear that the next thing to happen will be the loss of her hair. So, I need to get this done quickly. Here’s my progress so far…not much, but at least it’s a start…

One other project I want to get completed soon is another pair of Greenaway Fingerless Gloves. One of my closest friends just found out she has a mass at the base of her brain. She will be heading to UAB for a consultation with the surgeon in charge. A few weeks ago, she saw the other pair of gloves I had made for a gal we work with (we work at the same place), and she had commented how she would love a pair in pink yarn. Well, silly me went right online and ordered more of the Alchemy Sanctuary that I’m so fond of…getting pink for her and Platinum for the other pair. Her appointment is on Wednesday. I want to give them to her beforehand.

Well, that’s it for now…I’m off to drink another glass of carrot juice.

More About Juicing

I’ve been requested to provide a little bit more information about this juicing/detox thing.

First of all, if you’re thinking about doing a fast, check with your doctor. Especially if you have any kind of special health condition, such as diabetes. I will admit that I’m a bad girl and did not do this. My opinion is that most doctors do not know a whole lot about homeopathic things. They’ve been taught only the minimum. But, you should still keep them in the loop if you’re on any kind of medication or anything.

There are a lot of books out on the market that are dedicated to juicing and fasting. You can find out info for free simply by googling.

Here is one site I just found when I googled. After reading it, I have to say that I couldn’t find much to argue with. It explains the basics of how the body works during a fast. I need to let Soccer Chick read it as she proceeded to tell me how bad it was for my body, yada, yada, yada. Of course, she is a teen who doesn’t know as much as she thinks she does. But, her attitude typifies much of what I’ve seen from people.

Try telling people you’re on a juice fast. They look at you like you have two heads. Well, in my case, with my wild hair, it’s possible that there’s another head hiding under there somewhere.

Regardless, juice fasting is an amazing experience. Here’s an excerpt from the link I posted above:

Cells are like tiny sponges; they absorb what you breathe, eat, drink and apply to your skin. Over the years of poor eating and exposure to environmental toxins, there is a buildup within the body. During water fasting, these toxins are released at a rapid rate creating great discomfort. Water fasting becomes a hellish experience where more time is spent gagging on toxins than enjoying deepened fellowship with God. The juice of fruits and vegetables are filled with healing and cleansing properties that allow the body to gently and safely detoxify.

Very good stuff, I tell you.

Now, how do you go about fasting? Well, first of all, you really need to prepare your body beforehand. You should stop the intake of sugar, caffeine, alcohol and red meat at least one week before you plan to start your fast. Try to increase the amount of raw fruits and vegetables you consume during the week before. That helps your body adjust a bit more easily to the detox program you are about to put it through.

What portions are you looking at? How much should you drink? Drink one 8oz glass at a time, of either the fruit or vegetable juice. I recommend sticking primarily to the vegetable juice simply because of the sugar and acidic content contained in fruits. Allow yourself at least an hour between glasses of juice. Feel free to drink water anytime. Water is extremely cleansing and will make you full as well.

Nutritionally, vegetable juices will satisfy all requirements. You would actually be surprised to learn that you need far less protein than the “experts” say. Your body levels itself out, using all of the good stuff God packed into the produce.

How long should you fast? I recommend a very minimum of three days. Try that for the first time, if you want. Then try going longer. I read on one site that you should fast ten days every six months. You can also fast longer. I’ve read of people who did 40 day fasts.

Will your energy level decrease? Initially. But then, as your body normalizes, your energy level actually picks up. You find yourself getting rid of less waste (i.e. you poop less). Essentially, your body is using what your putting into it (the juice and water) quite efficiently.

Should you eat anything during a juice fast? I say no. Make a commitment and stick with it. Your hunger pangs subside and do go away altogether. You’ll find yourself thinking of food less often, although you’ll have moments. Push through. You’re teaching yourself self-control. Trust me…the benefits are totally worth it.

A few additional tips about what to do during your fast:

1.  Don’t take vitamins and other supplements.  These are manufactured in a laboratory.  The goal is to get your body as close to its natural state as possible.

2.  When you experience a headache, as you’re sure to do during the first couple of days, don’t take pain medication.  As a general rule, headaches are a sign of thirst.  During a fast, they indicate the beginning of detox.  Allow your body to push through.

3.  Do not use body lotion or perfumes.  Your skin is the largest organ in your body.  Lotions and perfumes only add more toxins to it.  Allow your body to “breathe” out the toxins.

4.  Try to stay away from teas during your fast.  We have a tendency to sweeten our tea, and that’s a no-no during a fast.  You do not want to elevate your body’s sugar level this way.

5.  Do not chew gum.  Again, the gum has sugar (whether artificial or not).

6.  Get out and exercise.  You might not be able to do so during the first few days of your fast, but as your energy level increases, you’ll find yourself able to do more.  Exercise will push the detoxification process along.

Coming off of a fast very carefully is important. You’re not supposed to jump pell-mell into a hard-course meal. It’s best to spend several days eating mostly raw foods such as salads and raw fruits and vegetables. You’ll find your taste buds very sensitive, and these things will actually taste delicious! I remember two years ago, when I first started eating again after my fast. I think I ate a piece of pineapple first. Let me tell you…it was almost as good as my favorite chocolate drink (Caramel Choco-lixer) from the Godiva store. It’s gotta be good to beat that!

Ok, so now that I’ve armed you with all of this knowledge, pick a day on your calendar and do it! I’ll be here to support you.

Now, I’m off to drink a glass of carrot juice. I woke up feeling noticeably better today. My taste buds are actually able to distinguish a few things.  Yippee!

AuburnChick is a Juicing Fiend

I apologize for the delay in posts, but I’m still under the weather. This bug is doing a number on me, I tell you.

Unfortunately, Monday came upon me and duty called. Must work or I can’t pay the bills. With Tuesday on it’s way out the door, I’m starting to feel a teeny bit better, so I thought I would take a few minutes to blog.

I’m on Day 5 of my juice fast. I had not experienced many hunger pangs until this afternoon when I left work. For some reason, I felt extremely hungry. I hope that’s a good sign that a) I’m starting to get better and b) that detoxing is happening.

Two years ago when I did this, I went through about three days of hunger pangs, and then they subsided. This go-round has been a lot different. I think that the difference is that I am fighting a virus. It’s the kind where you don’t feel like eating much anyway. The other thing I’ve noticed is that my tongue doesn’t feel nasty and isn’t all white, like before. These are signs of detox. My breath was slightly bad this morning, but was probably just my normal self.

So, I’ve got a ways to go. I truly believe I’m going to be on this fast much longer than I originally planned.

I thought I would post my recipes for carrot juice and fruit juice. I took some pictures during the process today.

What you see pictured below is all the fixin’s for two 8oz glasses of juice. When making this juice, always make sure that carrots are your base. Carrots have so much nutritional value…beta carotene, vitamin C…the list goes on and on. The other ingredients are totally optional, but they are the things that, over the years, I’ve found are tried and true (and satisfy the palette of picky children).

Now, remember that these ingredients are for TWO glasses. Adjust your numbers accordingly.

You see ten carrots, one slice of cantaloupe, 1/4 cucumber, 1/2 red apple, one celery stalk, and a handful of spinach. Make sure you peel and de-rind the produce.

Now, let’s start juicing!

The pulp will be deposited in one location while the juice comes out of another. I will usually feed some of the pulp back into the juicer to extract the remaining juice. This stuff costs money, and I don’t want to waste a penny!

When you’re done, you’ll have this…

I like to think of it as Liquid Gold. The stuff at the top is foam. It will get caught in your strainer. Why use a strainer after? Because there is a little bit of pulp that will escape into the juice. For a smoother juice, always strain.

I use the Ball canning jars to measure out 8oz. Many years ago, I went to the grocery store and bought a box of them for a really good price. Why 8oz, though? In the book, Recipes for Life from God’s Garden (Rhonda Malkmus), I read that a body can only efficiently use 8oz at a time, so why waste the effort on more? Did you know that for every 8oz of carrot juice, you’re getting the equivalent of one pound of carrots? Wow! We would never eat that during the course of a day. Allow at least one hour between glasses of juice.

Now, on to the fruit juice. You’re really supposed to “drink your veggies and eat your fruits,” but I like to do fruit juices to clean out the breathing apparatus. I’ve often given it to Soccer Chick when she’s been sick (she’s had a lot of croup and allergy problems over the years), and she’s always gotten better within two days of drinking it.

My recipe for apple/orange juice is 1/2 to 1 whole red apple, two oranges (or one large), one slice of pineapple, and 1/2 lemon. Remember to peel all items.

Feel free to throw in other items, such as grapes. I’ve done this, and it tastes terrific! When done, you’ll have the following:

Strain it to remove the remaining pulp, and you’re good to go.

So, that’s how I’m surviving right now. I’m actually thinking of laying off of the fruit juice and sticking mainly to the carrot juice. Fruit contains a lot of natural sugar, and I don’t want to inhibit my body further.

Oh, and a side benefit to all of this is that I am losing weight. Now, I’m already a small gal, but I do have some flab, and I’ve recently noticed things not fitting like they usually do. Don’t hate me…small bodies are in my genes. I don’t know how much I weighed before I started, but I know that there’s no way I weighed what the scale proudly declared today. The thing about juice fasting is that your body levels out at its optimal weight, given enough time.

Enough about juicing.

I didn’t knit yesterday, but I did the day before, completing Rainbow Joy II, an Oddball Baby Blanket that’s part of the KnittingHelp.com project. This blanket is being done in all garter stitch. I knit the green portion.

I’m going to start on Racecar Alley next. I got a pattern for a car from a knitter who worked on a similar blanket (heavier weight project). You know I’ll post pictures when I’m done.

Boy, this has been an interesting week. Work-wise, it’s been fine. Health-wise…not so good. I have developed some sort of upper respiratory ailment that my body is having a hard time fighting. It’s run the gamut from the sore throat to a stuffy nose and wet cough. I’m frustrated. I hate going to the doctor, and I just cannot stand taking antibiotics. The last time I took them, my stomach was so upset.

So, I’m going to fight this like the strange girl I am…with fresh juice. I’ve decided to go on a juice fast. Sounds drastic, I know, but you have no idea how poorly I’ve been feeling.

This will be my second time fasting. I’m aiming for a minimum of ten days

Did I just hear you fall out of your chair? Ten days?? Yep. It’s really not as bad as it seems.

The first two or three days are pretty rotten. You have the non-eating headache, but that passes. Your body starts feeling achy, but that passes too. What happens is that your body, freed from the burden of processing food, can now focus on damage control…something it rarely has the time or energy for. You find yourself needing less sleep, and your energy level grows by leaps and bounds. The longer you fast, the more healing happens. Healing happens from the newest aches and pains to the oldest. I’ve read of people who fasted long enough to feel, temporarily, old knee or back pain return, then go away for good. This is a good site if you’re interested in reading more.

I’m making freshly extracted fruit and vegetable juices. I have a Champion Juicer…purchased several years ago. It’s one of the best juicers you can buy…not available at Target or Walmart but at most true nutrition/health food stores. It masticates the produce (i.e. mashes the juice, invoking very little heat and thus preserving the nutritional value).

I used to be much better with my eating and juicing habits. I made fresh carrot juice every morning for my family, and I watched everything that went into their mouths. Very little sugar and processed food was allowed into their bodies. I’ve slackened a bunch due to laziness and the expense that accompanies healthier eating. I’m getting back on board the Train of Healthy Eating.

Yesterday was the first day, and it wasn’t too bad. I’ve been feeling so poorly that whatever ickiness might have felt from the fast just doesn’t seem so bad. The next couple of days will probably be difficult. I’ll get through them. And I’m not even tempted by the cake I made for youngest chicklet’s birthday (Shout out to the Boy, who turned 14 yesterday). Nor was I tempted by the brownies I made for Soccer Chick and her friend last night. Nope. I’m on a mission.

Despite being sick, I have managed to complete another project. Last night, I cast off my third pair of Greenaway Fingerless Gloves. I used Alchemy Sanctuary, colorway Platinum. Each time I’ve knit these gloves, I’ve done something a little differently. This go-round, I wound up knitting an extra round on one needle, leaving it a bit wop-sided when I cast off. I tried to fix it the best I could, and I didn’t repeat the mistake on the mate. They actually turned out quite well despite my boo-boo.

These are for Knitting_Guy’s mom…the lady I made the cap for (previous post). I think she’ll like them. They are so soft. Smooth as silk, and warm too.

What’s next, you ask? I’m working on two Oddball Baby Blankets. I received them in the mail this week and should be receiving one more next week. I’m going to try to get them done quickly so I can cast on another no-hair chemo cap for my daughter’s friend’s mom. She starts chemotherapy this week.
