A Gift for Ms. Donna

Do you remember my friend, Ms. Donna, the Attendance Lady?  She’s the wonderful gal I worked with last Spring when I was blessed to sit at the Attendance desk for two months.

Well, today is Ms. Donna’s birthday.

I learned of it quite by accident.  Well, it was probably a God-thing.

Substitute teachers receive a daily newsletter when we pick up our attendance forms each morning.  The newsletters are great for informing us of school functions, suspended students, and other important information.

The newsletters also list monthly staff birthdays.

As I glanced at the list, I noticed Ms. Donna’s name, and I said to myself, “AuburnChick, you know how much you adore Ms. Donna.  Now, you don’t have much money.  What can you do to show her that you care for her?”

Naturally, I thought of knitting, but because I didn’t have much time, I decided to make her a couple of spa cloths.

I showed you a picture of them as they were blocking.

Because we had cooler weather for a few days, the cloths took longer than usual to dry.  However, yesterday they were finally done!

The pattern is called Turn Back Time Spa Cloth, and it is from the January 2008 Creative Knitting issue.

I used Lily ‘n Cream in Yellow (above) and Cornflower (below…and my all-time favorite color in the crayon box)…

I ran to my second pantry and pulled out an orange vanilla soy candle.  I thought it added a little something to the gift…

I wrapped things up…

And put everything into a pretty little bag I found with my wrapping paper…

I will be running by the school in a bit to give her the gift.  I can’t wait!  She’s such a special lady…the way she cares for the students and everyone she works with…that she deserves to be pampered.

Happy Birthday, Ms. Donna.  I love you!

College Football and Knitting

Can I tell you how happy I am now that football season has begun?

I am a huge college football fan.

Rooster created a group on ESPN’s College Pick ‘Em site.  Each week, the Mr., Rooster, and I make our picks and eagerly await the results.

It makes each Saturday a lot more fun because I now have a vested interest in the results.

I haven’t done so well this year, but it’s been fun all the same.

Sometimes, I pick for upsets, and sometimes I go with the flow and pick the teams favored to win.

The thing I enjoy most about college football Saturdays is the relaxed atmosphere around the house.  We’ll usually open the windows, because the weather has gotten cooler, eat “football” food, and just chill out.

It makes for great days of knitting.

On Friday, I learned that my friend, the Attendance Lady, has a birthday coming up.  So, I printed a couple of Joann’s coupons and headed out to buy some yarn.

I quickly churned out two Spa Cloths (Creative Knitting, January 2008).  I used Yellow and Cornflower Sugar ‘n Cream.  The cloths are blocking right now.

When they are dry, I’ll package them up with one of the candles I purchased a couple of weeks ago.

You’ve just gotta love the Fall and all of the activities it brings!

Happy Birthday Sis!

Today is my sister’s birthday!  Woo Hoo!

In true AuburnChick fashion, the kids and I called…early.  Nothing like the sound of semi-awake voices to get you going, eh?

Now that she’s unwrapped her present, I can share it with you.

First, the gift…

And now, what was inside…

I went with a “Spa” theme this year.

And individual pictures with descriptions…

The tiger (cause we’re Auburn fans) was my FIRST crochet project!  I’m extremely pleased with it.

Happy Birthday Sis!  You are a blessing to this world.  Your solid faith and life of prayer inspire me in my own walk.

The Knitting Bandit

I haven’t talked much about knitting lately.  That’s because I’ve been working on some projects and wanted to wait until they were completed to blog about them.

First of all, an explanation as to the title.  Have you ever left a gift at someone’s door, rang the doorbell, and run?  Well, perhaps your gift wasn’t so nice, and that’s the reason you ran.  We have a Halloween tradition in our neighborhood where you leave candy at a door, ring the doorbell, and run…surprising those inside.  That’s what I felt like this week.

I finally finished the Leaf Lace Scarf that I started way back in July.  Here’s the link for the free pattern.

Leaf Lace Scarf

Leaf Lace Scarf

The pattern really is easy.  The only reason why it took me so long is because I got sidetracked a few times with other projects, putting it down completely during the Olympics.

This project has a story…but of course you know that because everything AuburnChick does includes a story…

First of all, the pattern was sent to me by my Christmas KH Swap partner, who had also sent me some kettle-dyed yarn.  I had a horrendous time getting the scarf to look right because the yarn was just too thin, even though it was lace weight.  So I set it aside for about six months.  During that time, a different KH knitter found out that I had never touched Malabrigo…never even seen it in real life.  She generously sent me three skeins….two blue worsted weighted and one lace weight “Lettuce.”  You see, we had discovered that we were both working on the same scarf, although she was having much more success using the Malabrigo.  She surprised me with the skein I needed for this project.

That said, I finally got up the courage to try the pattern again…with the new yarn.  What a dream!  Malabrigo is all it’s talked up to be.  It slides through your fingers so smoothly that you hardly know it’s there.  As your project grows, you quickly discover its warmth.

Shortly after I cast on, my friend Christina (aka Rabbitrescuer on Ravelry and KH) had to rush her son, Austin, to the hospital.  He received 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 68% of his body and is currently receiving care at a Shriner’s Hospital.  You’ve heard me mention her before, but she’s important to this story.

I’ve been the liaison between her and the online community.  As a result, I’ve been blessed to become friends with her in real life.  I talk to her on the phone three or four days a week.  She is such a sweet gal…very soft spoken and incredibly generous.  We’ve had a lot of fun discussing our passion for yarns and projects.  If you’re on Ravelry, look her up and check out her stash.  Make sure you’re sitting down first, though, or else you’ll pass out from sheer amazement at the volume.

Anyhow…I have come to know several things about her.  First of all, her favorite color is green.  Secondly, she loves Malabrigo.  And third…during one of our chats, I shared that I was working on this pattern and provided a link.  She told me that she had queued the pattern to make at a later time.  By now, I had already decided that I was gifting this to her.  The revelation that she wanted to make this pattern was God’s voice in my ear…”That scarf you’re making belongs to Rabbit.”

Yes, Lord, I know.  Thank you for confirming what I thought I was hearing.  How nice to hear His will so clearly.

Somehow, making that decision changed the project from tedious to joyful.  It flew off of my needles from that point on.  I completed 37 pattern repeats before binding off.  And blocking, which is normally not my forte, went much easier too.  Check out these pictures…

I have to say that I am so proud of the scarf.  When I picked it up after it was dry from blocking, it was light and airy and draped beautifully across my arm.  I photographed it, packed it carefully, and put it in the mail immediately.

Buoyed by the joy that accompanies gifting homemade items, I started work on my next project.

This one is called the Warm Stripings Hat, from the Creative Knitting Magazine (January 2008).  One of Soccer Chick’s teammates asked me to make her a hat and described some of the featurs she wanted.  This pattern fit the bill.  I ordered the yarn recommended by the pattern:  Vero, color #18.

Even though this teammate is no longer playing for Chick’s team (although she has already committed to play at a large university, and she’s only a junior!), I couldn’t forget my promise to her…especially since I had already ordered the yarn for the project!  Here’s the finished product, modeled by my straw broom:

I’ve gotta tell you that this hat almost didn’t happen this week.  When I sat down to start a new project after the scarf, I quickly realized that I didn’t really have the needles I needed.  Oh, I had the right size, but not the correct size cables or dpns.

This is where you say, “Magic Loop.”  Thank goodness for this method and the fact that I made myself learn it a few months ago.  Also, kudos to interchangeables!  KnitPicks sends you little cap things with each cable needle.  I never knew how to use them before this project.

In the photo above, I had used one cable, with needles on the ends, to work a flap and  i-cord.

One Cable...I-Cord

I used an empty cable with caps on the end to hold the other stitches, which I would work on after finishing up the other side.

Perhaps you’re thinking, “easy, peasy.”  Not for me.  These things require my brain to work overtime…something I’m not good at.  But I’m glad I put in the extra effort.  It saved me money and time.

I test drove this hat on a couple of teens, who gave me a resounding Thumbs-Up, informing me that this hat is tres chic.  In other words, they want one too.

I excitedly put the hat in the mail this morning, wrapped in tissue paper and ribbon.  I wish I could see the look on the recipient’s face, but just the knowledge of having done the deed and run…

Well, that is what I call a knitter’s ultimate joy.

The joy is in the giving and the surprise felt by the other person at the unexpected package of love.

A Busy Week

Whew! What a busy week!! I am so glad that tomorrow is Friday!

I work at a law firm. Part of our business is real estate, and today we attended an condo auction. I sat, for eight hours, in one room, keeping a watchful eye on the computers. Fortunately, the room had a great view. I was able to watch the approach of a storm…common for this time of year in Florida.

I got nervous when I saw several bolts of lightning, and I quickly unplugged all of the machines so we wouldn’t get zapped.

The storm passed, and the sun came out.

Oh to be rich and have a boat…

After a few hours of severe computer problems, everything straightened out, and the rest of the day progressed smoothly. I finally left for home about 5:30 — a long day since I’m usually home by 2:00.

Despite the crazy week, I have been doing some knitting, although not too much.

On Sunday, I finished my portion of the Forest Greens Baby Blanket. I used Baby Bee Sweet Delight Baby, which I found at Hobby Lobby. The yarn is unbelievably soft. It’s a DK weight. I had a little problem with yarn puke, though. Oh well, it all worked out.

Here’s a close-up of my portion. The stitch is called Farrow Rib. I really like it. It was simple and looks nice on both sides. It’s probably one of my favorite stitches that I’ve used on these blankets.

I made the Summertime Spa Cloth, from the Creative Knitting, July 2008, issue as a gift for the next knitter on the blanket.

I used Sugar ‘n Cream. The color is Potpourri Ombre.

I really like this pattern. It’s pretty easy, although a chart would have been better. As you can tell, my blocking skills need work.

Next, I finished the Black Sheep Booga Bag that I’ve been working on for a friend. I used Noro Kureyon #149. I bought the yarn during my Vegas trip. I think this is one of my favorite colorways…very natural and soothing.

After felting it, I let it dry for a couple of days.

Just when I thought I was almost done, I realized that it wasn’t sitting up properly, so I threw it back in the machine again and let it shrink a little more. The extra effort was worth it. Here’s the finished product. I can’t wait to give it to my friend.

I’ve also managed to start the Froot Loop socks. I’m using Fiesta Baby Boom yarn. If I had to describe this yarn in one word, it would be “squooshy.” The colors are fantastic! It’s a dream to knit with.

Here’s the progress so far.

Oh, and a shout-out to Littlest Chicklet. Look at what he brought me the other day…

He and Mr. AuburnChick went grocery shopping on Sunday. When he passed the flower section, he asked if he get them for me…”For Mama’s graduation.”

::::sigh:::

I really love that boy. How nice to come home after a long couple of days and spy those flowers, which are still alive (yes, I remembered to water them). They are a reminder that no matter how busy I get, I always come home to my family.

AuburnChick Enjoys a Quiet House

Do you hear that?

What? Can’t hear anything? Neither can I. Ahhhh…the blessed sound of silence (except for the tapping of keys on the computer).

My house has been without the presence of teenagers since early Wednesday morning. Usually, when the chicklets go out of town, I can hear the audible longing of my heart wishing for them to be home. Not this time. After what happened on Tuesday, it was almost a relief to have them gone for a few days.

Let the record show that it was NOT my decision to let them go. Mr. AuburnChick said yes. His reasoning was sort-of sound. I have to tell you that I’m really glad he did. The last few days have been a pleasant respite. To be quite honest, I had not even thought of the disciplining that we will have to do when the kiddos come back home. We have some heavy-duty things going on…since a bit more happened after the kids ganged up on me (which I really don’t want to go into detail about here). This stuff will require a heavy hand, unfortunately. My mind didn’t even go there until yesterday, giving me three whole days of bliss.

Ahhhh…so refreshing.

Do I sound mean? I hope not. For the last 16 years (not counting the time I was pregnant with Soccer Chick), my life has been centered around those kids. Yeah, yeah, I know. You’re not really supposed to do that. However, my own upbringing was lacking in many areas. I have always been determined to be a better parent. That is one reason why I stayed home for several years and only work part-time now. That has been fine and dandy up to this point.

Having teenagers makes you realize that there is life out there…life that doesn’t always revolve around children. There’s light at the end of the tunnel of this long, long journey. You begin catching glimpses of it every time your child wants you to just “drop me off” at the movies or a friend’s house.

So, this week has been good for me.

On Thursday, my friend (Soccer Chick’s friend’s mom…who just started chemotherapy) came over to watch me juice and taste the finished product. We had a wonderful time! We talked a lot about our girls, with me confiding in what Soccer Chick did after the phone thing. She empathized, drank her juice, which she found delicious (told you so, but I didn’t say it), and we visited for a little while afterward. I gave her the hat I made her, along with a knit pair of slippers. Someone gave them to me, but they were a tad too small. They are the same color as the blanket I made her. She was almost in tears, wondering why I was spoiling her. Um, because I love you and want you to know I care. This is a friendship in the making, and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

Yes, this week has been good for me.

I haven’t been a very good housekeeper though. I thought I would be able to get caught up on cleaning. But you know what? I didn’t want to! Every day, I came home from work, caught up on blogs and online forums, and after juicing, I just wanted to sit and knit. So I did.

Ahhhh…how refreshing…

My free time gave me the opportunity to finish up two Oddball Baby Blankets.

This one is called Beach Party. I used Lion Brand Microspun. The color is Mango. The pattern is Dotted Chevron, from the pattern book knit & purl.

This one is Jewelry Box. I used Carons Simply Soft, and the color is Mango. The pattern is the Caterpillar Stitch, again from the knit & purl book that I own. I was the last knitter, so I cast off. I’ll be sending it to another gal who will crochet a border on it.

I’m going to knit an Embossed Daisy Washcloth from the Creative Knitting magazine (May 2008 issue). I tried to find a link to a picture of it, but I couldn’t.

After that, I’m going to start on the Greenaway Fingerless Gloves for my friend.

Two more days of quiet…I better get knitting!
