A Yarn Treat

I received the new Knit Picks catalog in the mail early this past week, and as I flipped through the pages, my attention was drawn to one kit in particular…

That, my friends, is the Heartwarming Stocking Kit.

Oh word, but I just knew I had to have it.  The Mr. once asked if I would knit some stockings for the house, so I figured this was the perfect opportunity…especially since the kit was on sale.

I ordered it, and my box arrived today…

I eagerly dug in…

Isn’t it pretty?

Take a look at what you see when you turn the bag over…

Oh, yarny goodness!!!!

I didn’t dare open the plastic wrap to touch the yarn in fear of totally losing my wits and forgetting that I had lesson plans to write.

The plans have been finished, and I have one day of fun before the week begins (along with another ESOL class).

I have decided to play with yarn on Sunday.

No, I will not cast on, because I have two other projects going.  However, I will cradle the yarn tenderly, loving on it…holding it close to my face…dreaming of when I can put the first stitches on my needles.

The colorwork scares me, but I’ve got some time to get over my fears.

I have much to do in the way of real life work and such.

Still, the joy from the yarn treat, though a bit frivolous, will linger, giving me something to look forward to when things slow down.

Still Christmas-ing

I don’t know about you, but I’m not quite ready to quit indulging in a bit of Christmas fun.

Thankfully, I haven’t had to thanks to the generosity of family, who gave me gift cards!

The first card I redeemed was for Amazon.

My wish list is long. As a reading teacher, I’m forever reading book reviews and adding titles to my list.

The first thing I added to my cart, though, was NOT a book but a DVD.

One of my favorite songs is Amazing Grace / My Chains are Gone by Chris Tomlin. Long before I heard him play this song live during a concert at a local beach, I fell in love with the video…

I wondered what movie clips were used in the video. Fortunately, so did other people, and someone answered the question in the video’s comments section.

Thus, the movie Amazing Grace was added to my wish list.

As a history buff, I am psyched, as the movie details the attempt by William Wilberforce, a Briton, to do something about England’s slave trade.

The movie got nearly all stars possible on Amazon, so it’s gotta be good, right?

I did manage to order a couple of books…Unwind, by Neal Shusterman, and Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry.

My friend, Barb, told me about Unwind after she found out one of my students was looking for a “different” sort of book. The book is about a time in the future when parents can choose to have their children unwound if they aren’t quite up to snuff…for any reason. The story details the saga of three young friends. One of them eventually becomes unwound. I can’t wait to read the book, but more importantly, I cannot wait to see what my student thinks of it. I will probably ask him to do some sort of extra activity that will showcase the book to the class.

The other book, Gathering Blue, sparked my interest after I read the book The Giver last summer. That book touched my heart and left me with many unanswered questions, just as the author intended. I was thrilled to discover that she continued the series, and I plan to purchase the next two books eventually.

With those three items bought, the gift card was officially spent.

I turned to my second gift card…an iTunes card.

I fully intend to save most of it for apps, but I couldn’t resist buying the following song. I love the musical arrangement and the way the singers phrase out the song. It’s just one of those songs that sticks with you.

Although I personally don’t give a lot of gift cards as presents, I will say that I sure do enjoy receiving and spending them!!!!

There’s Always One

Every Christmas, there’s always one…

One person who gets sick, that is.

With ten people in our family celebrating together each year, someone always gets sick.

Guess whose turn it was this year?

Yep.

You’ve got it.

That person was ME.

I started feeling icky on Saturday, while we were in Alabama visiting the Mr’s grandmother.

I started sniffing and sneezing.

I never sneeze unless I’m getting a cold.

I thought it was something in her house.

We traveled to the Mr’s parents’ house that evening, and I only began to feel worse.

I slept horribly that night, experienced extreme joint pain, and hovered between sleep and wakefulness all night.  Every time I woke to semi-consciousness, I spoke out the word “inference,” and visions of my students floated in front of my eyes.

No, I wasn’t delirious, but I was seriously not feeling well.

I had to suck it up though because I had to go visit my mom.

I took Airborne like crazy, along with Excedrin Migraine and Sudafed Cold and Sinus.

Yeah.  It was probably not the best thing to do, but I was trying to treat pain and cold symptoms.

I got through the day with a lot of Kleenex.

Christmas Eve, my joint pain was gone, but the cold I was suffering from was nasty.

Still, I participated in last minute shopping adventures.

I had to sit out the food preparation and cleanup though.  I didn’t want my germy hands to touch anyone else’s dishes or food.

That evening, I began to suffer another issue…extreme stomach ailments, which I will not describe except to say that the hours from 8pm to 12am were longgggg, and I read 3/4 of a book that a student had loaned me.  Oh, and my feet managed to go numb during various bouts of stomach ailment flareups.

I was miserable and in tears throughout the night because being sick is not something I do very well.

I gingerly got into bed that night and did manage to catch a few hours sleep.

Although the cold wasn’t gone, I woke up feeling a little better on Christmas morning and enjoyed a day of Christmas fun with my family.

We came home Christmas night, had our own Christmas opening party with the kids, and settled in for a long, storm-filled night with the puppies, who’d been well taken care of by a young man Chicky graduated high school with and is my go-to guy for dog sitting.

Today, we hit the road for Best Buy to do some exchanging.  Before we left, I took more medicine because I still wasn’t feeling well…stomach issues along with symptoms from the cold.

Unfortunately, all of the medicines did not hit my stomach well, and things were bad for a few minutes until everything passed through my stomach.

Lord have mercy!

He did, and I am back to only suffering from a runny nose and cough.

All in all, I had a great Christmas but am glad that my turn at being sick is over.

Not that I would wish for someone else to be sick, but since there’s always one, next year, it’s someone else’s turn!

Just sayin’!

The Slow Transition to Christmas Break

How long does it take a teacher to transition into vacation mode?

Take a look at the Facebook update I just posted…

Dear Family, I just spent ten minutes putting the DVDs in proper alphabetical order. I have no excuse for myself other than to say that enough time obviously hasn’t passed for me to get out of Teacher-With-a-Classroom-Library mode. Let’s pray that a transformation happens quickly or else I’ll be rearranging your dresser drawers.

You may want to offer up a prayer for my family.  They’re going to need every ounce of patience they can muster until I either complete the transformation or hunker down in my bed for the next two weeks in hibernation mode.

By the way, Chicky put up our small tree for me.  It has lights but no ornaments.  Nobody in the family seems bothered one little bit.

Go us.

We’re really into the Christmas spirit, eh?

As I said.

Pray.

😀

Still No Tree

It’s December 10th, and I cannot believe that I’m admitting that I still do not have my Christmas tree up yet.

I don’t have garland hung.

I don’t have the stockings hanging in front of the fireplace.

We’re still using non-themed dish towels, and my wreath is still hibernating beneath the bed.

I used to decorate my house the week of Thanksgiving.

Everything except for the tree used to be up by the time we enjoyed our big Thanksgiving meal.

Over the last two or three years, I’ve seen myself sliding.

My work responsibilities leave me exhausted.

With the kids growing older, there’s nobody around to help me take everything down and put stuff away after the holidays.

It’s depressing besides being a lot of work for one person.

Is this what happens when you get older?

Is this what happens when your career takes over your life?

Sometimes I can’t wait for retirement when I’ll have time to enjoy the things that seem to have disappeared from me of late.

Starting My Christmas Wish List Early

Dear Santa,

I thought I’d get a jump start on making my Christmas list this year.  I know that once school starts in August, I won’t have much time to take care of such important tasks as this.

Here’s a little something that you can get working on right away…

You know that blue is my favorite color, so go ahead and make a duplicate copy of this one.

Please make sure you include the following insignia…

In case you’re wondering, the “S” stands for Superwoman.

Please keep this list open as I’ll be adding to it periodically.

Love,

AuburnChick, Your Faithful Friend Who Still Believes

A Furry Baby Christmas

On Tuesday, my pups returned home, courtesy of the drop-off service my boarding facility provides (for a small fee, of course)…

They sure were glad to be home, as evidenced from the following pictures…

Poor Molly.  She’s not feeling too well and hasn’t eaten much since she got home.  She doesn’t do well, emotionally, when we board her, and eating the boarding facility’s food threw her belly for a loop, I’m afraid.

She’s become a big snuggler…grateful that her mama is home…

Ringing Out 2011 With the Hodgepodge

It’s hard to believe that this is the last Hodgepodge for 2011!  Thanks, Joyce, for a great year.  I’m looking forward to what you have in store for us in 2012!

1.  Share something you loved about your Christmas Day.

I loved watching the childlike joy that emanated from each person’s face, regardless of age, at the opening of each gift.  I think that gift opening strips from us the pretenses that age and experience can bring with them.  Instead, there’s anticipation of what lies beneath the ribbon and wraps.

2.  You get to put five items in a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what items would you choose and why?

Knitting Needles – To show that knitting was WAY COOL even in 2011
Sock Yarn – To show that yarn was WAY COOL even in 2011
Educational Psychology Book – To highlight how much educators “thought” they knew in 2011 (things are always changing, don’t you know)
A Smartphone – To show how archaic we were in 2011 as, I’m sure, technology will be out of this world in 2111.
The Bible – To share the message of Jesus, God’s Son, and to demonstrate that God never changes, no matter how much time passes.

3.  What do you like on a cracker?

Hmmm…I don’t eat crackers very often anymore.  I guess I’d have to say that I like to eat them with hummus, which is a vegan-friendly dip.

4.  Do you make resolutions at the start of a new year? How’d that work out for you this past year?

I’m not so good at making resolutions.  I typically forget about them.  I’ve got no idea if I made any for 2011.  I guess I could go back and see if I blogged about anything, but I’m feeling lazy.  I’m not going to make any for 2012 because I know I probably won’t be able to keep them.  I am going to strive to find some balance in my life, but I fear that will not come to fruition with teaching and upcoming reading endorsement certification classes (ten of them…oh joy).

5.  What’s a song or song lyric you’ll associate with 2011?

I love the song, Firework, by Katy Perry.  It’s what I danced to when I got the final approval on my last EPI (teaching certification program) assignment and was, after six months, finished.  Thus ended a very stressful half year, and I’ll never, ever forget the release of joy as I danced my way through that song, on the Wii, several times, alone in my house, tears streaming down my face.

6.  How will you ring in the new year?

I’ll probably be knitting and chatting online with KnittingHelp knitters.  Yes, I am a party animal.  Be jealous.

7.  What is something you look forward to in 2012?

I am looking forward to summer vacation, which will begin early in June.  That will mean that I survived my first year as a teacher in the public school system, and I’ll probably be 1/3 of the way through with my reading endorsement certification program.  I plan on sleeping through the first month of vacation.

Sad, eh?  LOL

8.  My Random Thought

Many of you have grown or nearly grown children and, thus, can identify with me when I say that it’s so wonderful to have both of my kids at home during the holiday.  After we got home from visiting the Mr.’s parents and my sister and her family, Chicky got a wild hair and decided to redecorate her room…a room that she doesn’t really spend much time in since she’s in college now.

First, we bought her a new comforter and sheets.

Then, she got Rooster to help her move the furniture around.

Her room went from looking like this…

To this…

One of her college friends is coming to visit for a few days, and I suspect that she wanted to de-kidify her room a bit, if that makes sense.

The sounds of discussion and laughter as she and Rooster moved things around made my heart swell with joy.

We have had an incredible Christmas.  Life with two nearly grown children is so much easier.  We all communicate well with each other.  Our laughter is based on years of shared memories that others outside of the family just wouldn’t get.

One of the questions above asked what we were looking forward to in 2012.  One of the things I’m dreading is Rooster leaving for college, and some of the laughter leaving with him.

Holidays will become even more important as the years go by.  This year gave me a glimpse into the future.

More Christmas Happenings

My, my, my, but time does seem to fly when you’re not having to make lesson plans and actually feel like your head is screwed on tightly!

I last blogged about my celebration with my mom.

Well, that afternoon, Coupon Queen admitted herself to the hospital.  She’d been having dizzy spells, and she thought her diverticulitis might be acting up.  So, off she went, and we started praying.

She didn’t go home that evening.  Grand Pooba returned to the house in the wee hours of the morning to retrieve her personal items because she’d been admitted into her own room.  We never heard a thing.

The next day, we took turns visiting her.  Chicky, Super Sis, and I ran to Walgreens, where everyone in Podunk, USA, was doing last-minute shopping, and picked up a set of lights, garland, and a musical animal.  We decorated her room and turned on the saxophone-wielding critter.

She smiled in delight, and the nurses chuckled softly when they entered at various times.

She got to go home later that afternoon, and we all did our thing, whatever that was (can hardly remember what exactly “that” entailed), and then we headed off to bed to await Santa.

I don’t know why, but I woke up at 3:19am and just could not go back to sleep.  My stomach wasn’t feeling great, and I was a little nervous that I’d caught my nephew’s bug, so I stayed in bed until 4 before finally giving up and arising.

I got myself all made up and then traveled downstairs, where I read for an hour before I started hearing people begin to stir upstairs.

It was finally time to find out what Santa had brought…

Chicky asked for that Bieber calendar, and yes, she’s almost twenty years old.  Go figure.

The kids seemed pleased with their gifts, and we waited for Super Sis’s family to arrive.

Coupon Queen had wrapped the presents with beautiful bows and ribbons, which made taking our time even more fun…

Tradition is that we take turns opening gifts, one at a time, beginning with the youngest person.  Everyone gets his or her time in the spotlight, and it’s a great way to thank each gift giver personally.

While one person opens, the rest of us wait…patiently…

Everyone seemed to really like their gifts.

I got a magenta colored purse, seven-cup food processor, and various other goodies.

Grand Pooba seemed to enjoy his BB gun, which Super Sis’s family got him to scare away adorable animals like this guy…

Yeah, yeah.  Don’t you dare post ugly comments.  First of all, I didn’t give that gift, and second of all, I yelled out to the squirrels, “Run, run for your lives!!”  I have witnesses.

After eating lunch, we headed over to Super Sis’s house to see what her family had gotten.  It was like walking into the aftermath of a tornado.  They’d opened gifts and run!

We visited for a while and headed back to the grandparents’ house for the evening.

I was doing a slow fade and headed to bed early.

It had been a wonderful Christmas!

Christmas Celebrations – Continued

Like most families, we celebrate Christmas…several times over.

Our second celebration took place in Small Town, Alabama, where the Mr.’s grandmother, Mama Dot, lives.  She’s a sprightly 96 year old who seemed to take great pleasure from our visit.

The Mr. had picked out this pair of earrings for her…

Chicky helped her put them on…

She seemed to like them and looked quite sporty with them on…

After spending a few hours with her, we headed back to Bigger City, Florida, and landed at the Mr.’s parents’ house, where they had prepared dinner for us.  Super Sis, Super D, and their children were there.

We pulled out the game that Chicky and Rooster had gotten for Christmas…

It’s called “Logo,” and it’s quite fun.  There are tons of questions about various types of logos.  It took a long time to play, and we finally had to call it quits.  I took the above picture so we could continue the game later.

Today (Friday), it was time for celebration #3…the one with my mom.

Last year’s get together had been a disaster, but Mom and I have recently started the hard work of repairing our relationship.

Today’s shindig was much merrier.

Super Sis always hosts, and she had prepared another great table of food…

Her decorations were lovely as well…

No tree would be complete without an Auburn ornament…or two…or three…

Rooster and Music Man (my nephew) distributed the gifts…

Some gifts were handled carefully…

I sat in anticipation as I waited for Mom to open her present.  I’d finally gotten in the Christmas spirit on Tuesday afternoon as I let the stress of work drain away.  I’d purchased this Ashton Nichole piece…

The company is owned by a local gal whose daughter is Rooster’s age and attends a local high school.  Her jewelry is GORGEOUS…made out of the ever popular Swarovski crystals.  Everything comes with a lifetime guarantee.

The blue stones are similar to Mom’s birthstone…sapphire.  Mom seemed quite pleased and proudly put it on…

Mom had surprises for us.

Super Sis and I got Christmas sweaters…

Here’s a closeup of my sweater…

Even Gracie, Super Sis’s sweet dog, got a gift…

All-in-all, it was a very good day.

That is until Coupon Queen had to go to the emergency room.

Please say a prayer for her.  She’s been feeling unwell for the last few days, and so far, the tests that have been run are inconclusive.  It stinks to be sick.  It’s even worse when it’s during the holidays.

Let’s pray that she’s feeling well enough to come home tomorrow (Christmas Eve) so we can celebrate Christmas with everyone present.
