HD Rocks

The cable guy visited my house today to upgrade my service which, thanks to a great promotion, will cost me the same as what I am currently paying each month.

Last summer, I had returned my DVR and HD box to cut down costs. We’ve really missed recording our shows.  We also missed our soccer channels.

Well, they’re back, and everyone in the family is happy.

We’re currently watching AC Milan and Chelsea play a soccer match.

Pele thinks the new HD service rocks!

What a Life!

Need I say more?

Dog Days of Summer

I walked into the living room a moment ago and saw Pele, lounging on the couch…

I inched closer.  The look on his face is priceless…

Ten minutes later, and he had flipped on his back…

Immediately, the phrase “Dog Days of Summer” entered my mind.

On a whim, I googled it.  Although I’ve heard this term often, I never really understood what it means.

I found the following explanation on this site…an interesting read, that’s for sure (although I can’t vouch for its accuracy).

The Dog Days of Summer

Everyone knows that the “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. Webster defines “dog days” as… 1 : the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere
2 : a period of stagnation or inactivity

But where does the term come from? Why do we call the hot, sultry days of summer “dog days?”

In ancient times, when the night sky was unobscured by artificial lights and smog, different groups of peoples in different parts of the world drew images in the sky by “connecting the dots” of stars. The images drawn were dependent upon the culture: The Chinese saw different images than the Native Americans, who saw different pictures than the Europeans. These star pictures are now called constellations, and the constellations that are now mapped out in the sky come from our European ancestors.

They saw images of bears, (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor), twins, (Gemini), a bull, (Taurus), and others, including dogs, (Canis Major and Canis Minor).

The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that the ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. Look for it in the southern sky (viewed from northern latitudes) during January.

In the summer, however, Sirius, the “dog star,” rises and sets with the sun. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun, and the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. They named this period of time, from 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, “dog days” after the dog star.

The conjunction of Sirius with the sun varies somewhat with latitude. And the “precession of the equinoxes” (a gradual drifting of the constellations over time) means that the constellations today are not in exactly the same place in the sky as they were in ancient Rome. Today, dog days occur during the period between July 3 and August 11. Although it is certainly the warmest period of the summer, the heat is not due to the added radiation from a far-away star, regardless of its brightness. No, the heat of summer is a direct result of the earth’s tilt.

Pele Gets a Shave

Thanks too all of you who wished a speedy recovery for my cut fingers.  As you can see, they are healing quite nicely thanks to some fancy new band aids that have the antibacterial ointment built in…

Poor Pele though.  He still had that horrible sticky area, and I was determined to get it off!  This time, I was not about to use scissors!  He may be 80 pounds, but he’s every bit a baby and prone to throw hissy fits.

Chicky and I took him to our smaller bathroom where Chicky squatted down and spoke calming words in his ear.  I grabbed Rooster’s hair clippers and shaved Pele’s rear.

I have no idea what he sat in, but it did a number on his skin…

It took a while, and he was one happy camper when we let him go.  The only time he looked at me was when I sat his food bowl down.

Although all wasn’t forgiven (he’s been eyeing me warily for the last two day), he did take the peace offering I handed out later…a nice big bone.

Snack Time!

We had a bit of fun with the dogs last night.

Now…no mean comments.  Those are organic Cheerios, and yes, I know we’ve created a monster (you’ll get what I mean after you see the video)…

Two Birthdays in the AuburnChick House

Today is Rooster’s 15th birthday.  He’ll be getting his drivers permit on Tuesday.  Look out world…another Chicklet will be on the roads!

It’s also the day we have designated as Molly’s birthday.  She’s two years old.

To celebrate, I made two cakes…one for human consumption and one for the dogs.

The tradition in this family is that every birthday cake is comprised of white cake with chocolate frosting.  However, ever since I made a Chocolate Chip Cake for Thanksgiving, it’s become Rooster’s favorite.  And that’s what he requested for his birthday this year.

Here’s the recipe, originally posted by Sunshine’s Mom on KnittingHelp.com.

Chocolate Chip Cake

Duncan Heinz Butter cake mix
1 small package Jello instant vanilla pudding
1/2 bar grated chocolate (I usually use German chocolate – it’s in a green package)
chocolate chips
1 cup oil
1 cup milk
4 eggs
A bundt pan

(Let me just say to start – grating the chocolate is the most time consuming part of this cake. I’ve found that using a zester instead of a grater works so much better. In any event, grate your chocolate first before doing anything else and you’ll be happy you did.)

With mixer, beat together cake mix, vanilla pudding, oil and eggs. Fold in grated chocolate. Put half of mixture into bundt pan, add enough chocolate chips to your liking, put rest of mixture on top (and maybe a few more chocolate chips?) Make sure chocolate chips are pushed into the top layer of cake mix. Lick the spoon, bowl and detach and lick the mixer blades, seriously. It’s that good.)

Bake at 350 deg. for an hour or until inserted knife or toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool in the bundt pan (I can’t stress this enough!). Once cool, tip over onto plate and cover with powered sugar if you wish.

I don’t have a bundt cake pan, so I use an angel food cake pan instead.

Rooster, in his excitement about a hot cake straight from the oven, ate a piece before anyone else…forgetting that we had yet to put candles on it and sing Happy Birthday.  Hence, the missing piece in the picture below:

I didn’t want the dogs to feel left out, so I decided to bake Molly a cake.  I visited Google for a recipe and found this site.  The only substitution I made was Almond Extract.  I didn’t know I was out of the vanilla until I began digging around in the pantry.

Here’s what the cake looked like after I put the candles on it:

I think Molly knew it was for her.  She was so excited when she saw me carrying it around and could not stop smiling!  You do know that dogs can smile, don’t you?

We sang Happy Birthday and helped her blow out the candles.  Then, we divided the cake into thirds and gave each dog a piece.

I think it’s safe to say they liked it.

Wonder what Tuesday will be like?!
