The Birthday Boy

Twenty years ago, I gave birth to my second child…a 7lb, 7oz little boy.

That boy is my Rooster.

He was an easy-going lad from the get-go, slept through the night the first evening home from the hospital, and hasn’t had problems snoozing since.

For the most part, this young man has been laid back.

We trained him early in the ways of life…he has bled Orange and Blue from the start…

He’s got a quirky sense of humor and is always ready to debate…he’s smart like that.

Rooster is quick to lend a helping hand and is eager to learn.

He is spending the summer away from home, interning at the same church in Tennessee that our former pastor now preaches at.

Fortunately, Rooster will be spending his birthday (and a few days afterward) at home thanks to timing that could only have been orchestrated by the Lord.

So it is with much love and gratefulness that I wish my sweet guy a Happy 20th Birthday!

I love you, Rooster.  You are a blessing, and I consider it an honor to be your Mama.

A Little Bit of Sun, A Little Bit of Spanish

Yes, I’ve been quiet for the last little while.

I have lots of excuses…fatigue from teaching…other online responsibilities…laziness.

Today, though, I decided to venture back to share how my children blessed my day.

It started yesterday when I received the following…

For years, sunflowers have been my flower-of-choice.  It all started when I began growing them when we lived in Coral Springs.

Chicky developed an affinity for sunflowers, and I’ve often surprised her with sunflower arrangements.

This weekend, she took it upon herself to treat me.

I cried when I saw them.  Chicky is not overly demonstrative with her love, and we have battled one another for years in true mother-daughter fashion.

It appears as if reconciliation has begun, and my heart is filled with joy.

The ray of sunshine from these flowers will illuminate my soul long after the flowers wither away.

Rooster was not to be outdone.

After church today, he presented me with the following card…

Now folks, you must realize that we speak no Spanish.  He took Latin in high school.

He knew that I’m rather silly, so he thought it would be fun to give me this card.

I did chuckle.

Then, he typed the words on the card into Google translator and emerged from his room able to tell me what the card said…that I’m marvelous (maravillosa), and that words cannot express (empezar) how much he loves me.

He also told me that I would never forget this card.

That’s for sure!

I am so blessed to be a mother and thank my heavenly Father for the gift of motherhood.

My children fill the empty places that pervaded my heart before I had my babies.

They fulfill my need to take care of people.

They keep me grounded (boy, do they ever).

More recently, they show me love in return.

He Melted My Heart

Rooster had to work all day yesterday, so he wasn’t able to be with me much on my birthday.

He didn’t get home until almost 9:30pm.

That didn’t stop him from giving me a hug and wishing me a sweet “Happy Birthday.”

He asked me to close my eyes so he could give me a gift.

I was surprised because he doesn’t have much money, college student that he is.

He prefaced the gift giving by explaining that he couldn’t find exactly what he’d wanted to give me.  Then, he laid something in my hand.

Here’s what I saw when I opened my eyes…

That’s when he told me that he’d been unable to find an Amazon gift card at Walmart.

He also said that he expressly wanted me to use this money to buy books.

He’s seen the many, many packages that have been delivered to the house over the last few months…all filled with books for my classroom.

He knows that I work really hard to foster my students’ love for reading.

His gift and thoughtfulness melted my heart.

He reached into his own pockets (no borrowing from Daddy) to give me a gift that would keep on giving.

Rooster is such a sweet young man.  You can see his kindness in his tender heart, and he always makes me feel loved on my birthday.

I am blessed.

That’s How You Celebrate!

People have already been asking me if I’ve enjoyed my Spring Break, now that it’s almost over.

I can say, with all honesty, that it’s been the best one to date!

I got to do everything I’d hoped…

Yarn shopped…clothing shopped…stayed up late and sort-of-slept in…

The best part, though, was spending a few days with Chicky!

Chicky and her roommate, K, drove up to visit on Thursday, walking in the door an hour and a half earlier than originally planned.

Do you have grown children?

If not, you have yet to experience the joy of welcoming one back home.

I’d spent the entire afternoon cooking, and the girls were ready to chow down, beginning with the vegan-friendly Cowboy Caviar

For dinner, we ate Parmesan Chicken over Lemon Butter Pasta.

I ate my Daniel Fast Black Bean Soup.

For dessert, I’d made another batch of brownies, as well as a double-recipe of Velveteen Cupcakes…

The frosting on those cupcakes is very messy, and I’m a bit ashamed; however, after spending over five hours in the kitchen, I was simply happy that 1) The frosting turned out well and 2) That there was an end to the cooking.

We watched Catching Fire after dinner before turning in for the night.

Friday was a bust as far as venturing out.  It poured like crazy here, so I stayed inside.

For dinner, we met some of the people in our Small Group.  We went to a Mexican restaurant across the bridge and had a lovely time.  It’s a place meant for the tourists, so there was live music.

Chicky told the waitress that it was my birthday the next day, so I was serenaded…in English and Italian.  Though I was quite embarrassed, the man who did the singing was so sweet that I had to hug him afterward.

We went home fat and happy.

Today was the real treat, though.

Rooster had to work, and the Mr. took Chicky’s car to the auto shop for much-needed repairs (shout-out to our friend, T, who gave us a super-awesome deal on the repairs!).

Chicky, K, and I headed out for an afternoon of fun.

First, we visited the boutique where I’d purchased the dress and sweater I posted pictures of a few days ago.

The day was simply glorious.  I should have taken pictures.  We were down at the marina, and it was in the low 70’s…perfect weather.

We walked to a coffee shop nearby, and I treated K to her first Espresso shot.  Chicky got regular coffee, and I got hot chocolate.  The owner was a sweetheart, and Chicky was reminded of how nice the people in Podunk, USA are…something she misses living down in South Florida.

We stepped next door to a small show where I purchased a bottle of wine.  The wine came from a local winery, and on a whim, I asked the girls if they wanted to go wine tasting.  They are, after all, of age.

They did, and so we drove across the bridge to the beach.

What fun, although the experience was a bit awkward at first.

Social graces are not my thing, I fear.

We got over our nervousness and simply had a good time.

I bought a few bottles…

Don’t you just love the bottle topper?

By this time, we were starving, so we headed back into town, drove past my school, where I waved at it, and parked the car in front of one of the many stores that lined the street.

We took a leisurely stroll, glancing in the windows and reading the menus at the various restaurants before finally setting on a well-known restaurant in our area…one that I am fond of for its Mediterranean food.

We sat outside and ate…enjoying the people watching we were doing as well as the easy conversation.

By this time, we were quite tired and headed home where Chicky presented me with my birthday gifts from her…

The wine is a Riesling called “Relax.”  This was the theme of the entire package of gifts, as you can see from the body scrub, body wash, body mist, and spa socks.

Super Sis sent me this lovely bracelet…

The bracelet was made by a single mom who is part of Trades of Hope.  The proceeds go to benefit women who are trying to create a sustainable income for themselves.

Coupon Queen and Grand Pooba sent me a card and a check…much appreciated.  🙂

We then sat down and watched Frozen.  I had been singing Do You Want to Build a Snowman ever since Chicky had walked in the door.  It was good that she finally got to see the movie!

Spring Break was a total blast.

I did not work, except to answer one SOS email from a parent (a quick response).

I got to see my Chicky and spend some time with Rooster (we met for lunch after his classes ended on Thursday).

I feel rejuvenated and ready to face the next two and a half months left of school.

Most of all, I feel loved after the extra pampering (by myself and by others).

A Visit From Chicky

Guess who’s home for the weekend?

My Chicky’s school district has had this week off for Spring Break, so she and her roommate, K, drove up to spend the weekend with me!  Their other roommate, K#2, was supposed to come as well; however, she’s been feeling under the weather and decided to stay home to recuperate (i.e. keep her germs contained to her house).

I’m not sure what the next couple of days will bring, but I do know that my heart will be full, and I’ll be treasuring every moment!

“I Finally Get It”

On Sunday, Rooster and I were returning home from eating out with friends after church.

We stopped at Burger King’s drive-thru window and picked up a couple of hamburgers for the Mr., who had not gone to church because he wasn’t feeling well.

When I pulled up to the window, the employee, a younger girl, told me that she liked my nails…

I’d gotten them done on Thursday.  In fact, that’s my biweekly splurge.

You’ve seen many pictures of my nails over the last few years.

Here’s what I had done for the Olympics…

I’d also noticed that the young lady’s nails were done nicely…a French manicure, to be exact.

As we pulled away, Rooster said, “Now, I finally get it.”

“Huh?” I asked.

He continued, “I always wondered what’s the point in getting your nails done…wasting all of that money.  Guys don’t notice that stuff.  Girls do, though, just like that girl at Burger King did.”

The funny thing is that he’s seen this happen quite a few times.

Pretty much anywhere I go, I get compliments on my nails, and I will compliment other women on theirs.

My students at school are constantly asking me to show them my nails when I get them filled and re-polished.

There’s a young lady who works at the Publix I frequent, and she always asks to see my nails when I walk in.  Of course, I always admire hers as well.

In Rooster’s words, “It’s a girl thing.”

I had to chuckle.

He’d had an “Aha” moment.

I finished our discussion by telling him how much I enjoy having my nails done nicely…how finished off they look…how pretty I feel because my hands look good.

That might sound vain, but it’s my life.  Don’t judge.

😀

Regardless, it was an interesting conversation…one I enjoyed a lot.

Annoyed With Lakeland’s Post Office

Yesterday was Chicky’s birthday.

I mailed her present on Saturday and eagerly watched the tracking information.

It was out for delivery on Tuesday…the day before her birthday; yet, when she got home, she had not received it.

Say what?

Yesterday, I checked the status, and it showed as being “Available for pickup.”

I was very confused and called about six different post offices in Lakeland…trying to figure out which one her package was being handled by.

I finally reached a lady around 4pm, and she offered to check into it and call me back.

Meanwhile, I received another email saying it had been delivered.

I eagerly texted Chicky, but when she went to the mailbox, she had NOTHING.

I am freaking out right now.

It appears as though the package was delivered TO THE WRONG ADDRESS, which is completely asinine because the label I printed from the online postage I paid for, clearly shows that I typed the CORRECT address.

Have I mentioned that I’m ticked off right now?

I also paid for PRIORITY shipping…guaranteed delivery.

Ugh.

I’m trying to remember to pray about this, but I AM TICKED.

I don’t want someone else to have my girl’s package.

She’s the one who is supposed to fill up the package of love I sent her.

Grrr.

Please say a quick prayer that things get resolved.  This mama heart is stressed right now.

Thanks!

Chicky’s Magical Birthday

Today, Chicky turns the big 22.

It’s her magic birthday because today is January 22nd.

I’ve always heard that when your number birthday matches the day of your birth month, it’s MAGIC.

Time will tell for my girl.

All I know is that from the moment I found out I was pregnant with her, my life was magically transformed.

Preparations were made for the day she would arrive…

The tiny, one-bedroom apartment made things a bit cozy.  I didn’t mind.  She was my first, and I wanted her close to me.

Life was good in the delivery room…after I got my epidural…

Those are what we called corded phones…back in the day.

After a lot of hours of labor…a bit of pain…a couple of unexpected observers (EMT trainees…totally embarrassing at the time but I was too young to know that I could politely refuse)…Chicky was born.

Please note that yes, I am posting my face, but I do not fear because that is the look of LABOR.  I totally look different now.

Also note Chicky’s adoring look of love as she gazes upon my face for the first time.

She knew which side her bread was buttered…or where the moo moo juice was coming from, if you get my drift.

😀

Chicky was weighed and measured and scored a perfect ten on the Apgar test.  She was a beauty from the get-go…

We took her home where we did a lot of this…

And this…

Those long nights left us sleep-deprived, let me tell you, and we caught our Zzzz’s whenever and where ever we could.

Ahhh…the magic of sleepiness, eh?

Chicky did a lot of sleeping on her own too…

Boy, did she love that swing.  It wasn’t fancy because we didn’t have money for the plug-in kind.  We had to carefully and slowly wind that sucker up when it stopped rocking so as to leave her sound asleep without startling her.

She slept a lot during her first trip to the beach.  What a good baby.

We had fun dressing her up for Easter.  She doesn’t look thrilled, does she.  We were, though, as new parents should be!

She was quite the character from the get-go.  Look at that mischievous grin…

Bath time was always fun.  She loved water from the beginning.

Truth be told, she was probably peeing in the water as I was taking that picture.  That’s her potty look.

I do hope she’s managed to outgrow that little habit…

heehee

Chicky was always getting into stuff.  Can you see her looking around for the next thing to put her hands on?  Hmmm…now that I think about it, she may be eying my big behind with the express desire for me to move it.

Trying to select a sampling of pictures to represent my precious girl’s early life was, quite honestly, too big a task for this tired teacher.

It was fun, though, as I relieved each of those moments…precious in their own way.

I became Chicky’s mom at the tender age of 21 (nearly 22), and I can’t really remember my life before becoming a mother.

That’s the magic of motherhood and why I celebrate Chicky’s birthday.

And for you, Chicky, a special message…

I pray that this is your best year yet…that is becomes that magical year we’ve talked about.

You’ve graduated from college and gotten yourself a real job.  You’re on track for a fabulous career.

You have wonderful friends and a life that is centered on the Lord.

You have a family who loves you more than you will ever know or understand…people who will never leave your side.

I pray that you enjoy this time of your life…a transitional time when you discover who you are as an adult.

I pray that you find your soul mate…someone who loves Christ and wants to serve Him in the same way that you do.

I pray that your knee heals better than new and that you continue to pursue your dreams…dreams you harbor deep in your heart and as you’re counting sheep each night.

I love you so much, through thick and thin.

As I used to sing to you before you went to bed…

I love you forever,
I’ll like you for always.
As long as I’m living,
My baby you’ll be.

You are precious…a gift that I treasure every day.

Love,

Mama ♥

Headed Home

I arrived at Chicky’s house twelve days ago.

It’s hard to believe that nearly two weeks have gone by so quickly.

During that time, she had her ACL surgery.  Life, for a few days, passed in four-hour increments…the amount of time between doses of pain medication…

I spent more money at CVS in a five-day span than should be allowed.  Chicky now has a fine assortment of stool softeners, anti-itch medicine, and Advil tablets (for the inflammation in her knee).

By the way, I think some of the above was a bit TMI.

Oh well.

We celebrated Christmas…

Puppy sitting for one of the athletic trainers…

I received lovely gifts.  The earrings were from Super Sis and her family.  They also gave me the jewelry stand.

I got to love on lots of fur babies, including Cali and the others Chicky’s roommate brought home with her on Saturday…

Cali was concerned about Chicky, sensing that things were off.  She has stuck close to her side ever since we got home from the surgery…

Chicky and I tried to get out to stores on the 26th; however, she became too ill from her pain meds, so we had to turn around and go home.

I was determined to get her moving, so we tried again the next day, after she’d quit taking her pain pills, and she fared much better, even riding around Target in a motorized wheelchair.

The 27th was a big day for Chicky; she had her follow-up with the surgeon and her first physical therapy appointment!

The PA in the doctor’s office got her leg to 80 degrees…

This was a huge step and vitally important to achieving full range of mobility again.

Some of the best news was that Chicky could take the immobilizer off and walk with one cane for support.  This made our shopping excursion the next day a lot less cumbersome…especially while we tried on shoes and fun leggings…

Those are my legs in the center picture, and no, I did not purchase the pants, showing great restraint. Had the Little Mermaid pair been available in my size, I would have bought them.

We had a bit of an adventure when we took Chicky’s laundry to a place that did everything for us.  At ninety cents a pound, with a minimum of nineteen pounds, we thought it was a great deal…

Until the woman weighted Chicky’s stuff…

And discovered that she had over thirty-six pounds of dirty clothes and linens.

I went halfsies with her, and we killed four hours of waiting by doing the above shopping.

We also ate a free lunch, courtesy of Tijuana Flats…

Chicky held up like a trooper.  I was extremely proud of her.  Neither one of us napped that day either!  It was a victory all the way around!

Our twelve days together found us watching a LOT of TV.  We decided to watch Prison Break, which I’d watched when the series originally aired and had gotten a hankering to watch after my nail salon played the pilot the last time I got my nails done.

Chicky was hooked from the first show, and we spent hours, end-on-end, watching.  We made it to Season 2, Episode 13, I think.

Our addiction was so bad that as we killed time on Saturday, we would look at each other, smile slyly, and admit to wanting to be back at the house watching TV.

Something I did not do much of during that twelve days was work.  I just didn’t feel like it, despite taking all of my lesson planning stuff and a bunch of grading.

My focus was Chicky…even on the days when I wanted to go into the bathroom and cry because of the way she was lashing out at me…a lot of it because of the pain and sickness from the surgery.

These last twelve days have been about servitude…giving when it’s not easy…forgiving when the hurting is more than physical…compromising when needed but standing your ground at certain times too (“Yes, you have to take these pain killers,” said on the second night home from the surgery).

These last twelve days have been about patience.  I did, after all, invade Chicky’s world…the microcosm of existence that she has created for herself as a bona-fide adult.  I didn’t always do things like she would have done, but I tried.  We both had to bite our tongues more than one, or three, or twenty times during these last couple of weeks.

These last twelve days have been about watching my little girl…not so little, really, this go-around with the ACL surgery (the last one was eight years ago)…fight for independence over the daily tasks that I won’t be here to help her do when I leave today.

While it’s going to be hard not to be with her, protecting her from puppies that might run into her in their exuberance (ahem), reminding her to ice her knee after doing her twice-daily exercises, and dispensing her Advil, I know that God continues to hold her in the palm of His gentle hands.

It’s been such an honor, and I do mean that, to take care of her…tending to her needs…being there when she called out for me in the middle of the night.

We will return to our busy lives, but I’ll never forget this time with my girl…a hidden blessing bestowed upon me by my gracious heavenly Father.

Humbled Gratefulness

It’s a unique Christmas Eve for my family this year.

Chicky opted to have her ACL surgery right before the holiday so she could use her two weeks of Christmas vacation to recuperate without having to take time off…something that would have been frowned upon at the school she just started teaching at.

Normally, Christmas Eve finds us doing the mad dash around town, picking up what really are unneeded items…stopping off at Starbucks for treats and laughter.

This year, I started off the day coaxing Chicky into the car for what we hoped would be our first foray into the real world since Friday.

We had to turn around because she got so nauseous that she was going to be sick, and she proceeded to throw up when we got back to the house.

It wasn’t the ideal start to the day.

I called the doctor’s office, and we changed her pain medicine.  The nurse also called in a prescription for the nausea.

What a sweet lady the nurse was.  She commiserated with Chicky’s troubles and offered a unique way to take the pain medicine…speaking from her own personal experience with the stuff.  She talked to me for at least fifteen minutes before we hung up.

Poor Chicky.  Her body just cannot handle pain medicine.  She’s rarely had to take them over the years, so the foreign chemicals wreak havoc in her body.

While she dozed off on the couch, I drove to the doctor’s office, showed my ID to the clerk, and was given my script.  The clerk was one of the nicest women ever…especially given that this is Christmas Eve.

I took the prescription to CVS, and though the pharmacy was a mad house, the pharmacist patiently answered all of my questions, and the clerk entered Chicky’s information quickly.  Her nausea medicine was already ready for me to take home, and the new pain meds would be ready in an hour.

This is completely unheard of!  I’ve been in pharmacies almost every Christmas Eve for the last twenty years.  Someone in my family ALWAYS gets sick on this day.  I’ve always had to wait three or four hours.

When I returned an hour later, the gal who rang me up asked if Chicky was feeling any better.  Her sympathy was so sincere.  She was patient, even though there were other customers waiting.

I left with a smile on my face despite my heart that was hurting for Chicky.  I cannot stand when my babies are unwell.

I went straight from CVS to Publix to pick up more fruit.  I’ve been making my famous apple/orange/pineapple juice for Chicky every day, and we were running low on supplies.

The store was c-r-a-z-y, let me tell you, but once again, I encountered patient employees who wore honest smiles.

Even the lady in the McDonald’s drive-thru window had eyes that twinkled when I picked up a Happy Meal for Chicky (she has, as of this moment, eaten the whole thing and kept it down).

Chicky is sleeping as I type this.

I spent some time thinking while I straightened my hair, taking advantage of some down time.

I reflected on the spirit of Christmas, which I just haven’t felt this year.

This season is all messed up for me.

I’ve found myself doing last-minute shopping at Walgreens and CVS.

Desperation and convenience seem to be the order of the day.

As I reflected, I thought of each person I encountered today…each so giving though they had to work…each taking an extra moment or two to make me feel like they were sharing my burdens with me.

Isn’t that what Jesus came to earth to do?

He humbled himself to the point of becoming a baby and came to earth so He could make a tangible difference in our lives.

He sacrificed His seat on the throne of heaven to touch the lives of those who needed Him.

I felt the Christmas spirit today…in each individual who crossed paths with me.

I am humbled.

I am grateful.

It’s been a tough few days, but God’s Spirit is alive, just as it was that first Christmas Eve.
