Courteous Library Patrons Do NOT…

Rooster is taking a class at the local college on Monday nights.  Because he does not have his license yet, I drive him there each week.

Most parents would probably go home; however, I’ve found a silver lining in these evenings.

I have the unexpected gift of time.  By waiting in the college’s library, I have the opportunity to focus on my own classes with few disruptions.

Well, not exactly.

Let me ask you a question.

Do you remember the days when we would go to libraries, and stern-looking librarians constantly reminded us to hush?

Yeah.

Gone are the days.

For two weeks now, I have had to listen while my fellow library goers:

  • Played World of War Craft and talked either to themselves or to unknown players on the other side of the internet
  • Talked on their cell phones…loudly…to the point where other patrons heard the people on the other end of the line cursing
  • Carried on loud conversations with their best-buds while “others” (me) were taking very difficult quizzes

Do I sound picky?

Maybe just a little.  But hey, don’t people go to libraries to study?

Hello?

So, here’s my message to those of you who frequent libraries.

Be courteous.

You may not care about what someone else is doing there, but I can guarantee that the other person does.

  1. I’ve also noticed this disturbing trend, and. I wonder why librarians do not ask those individuals to be quiet. Perhaps, it is a sign of the times. Sigh.

  2. Hey there! Thank you so much for understanding what it’s like having to be away from my daughter on her 19th birthday. I’m trying hard not to dwell on it too much. My hubby is on his way to see her and to treat her out to a nice dinner. He’ll stop by Sam’s and get her a chocolate chip cookie cake and I sent some goodies for her to open. I feel sure she’ll have a WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY, but I do wish I could be there with her.

Yes, libraries are definitely not what they used to be anymore. I remember going to the library on campus when I was in college and it was so quite that you could hear a pin drop!

  3. I agree with you here Mrs. AuburnChick. However, I feel that it is my duty as your Mini-Me to remind you that the college library does actually have separate quite and talking areas. You might have been studying in the area where talking was actually allowed. I have been studying at that library long enough to know that the librarians WILL hush you if you try to talk in the quiet study spaces. TRUST ME. 🙂

  4. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the library.
I wonder how ours approach this subject.
