Mercy!

That’s what my legs have been crying since yesterday.

Meghan, hostess of the Stitch-It Podcast, started a Couch to 5k thread on Ravelry.  I’ve been perusing it, more out of curiosity than anything else.

Someone there posted that Podrunner has music that follows this Couch to 5k training program, a nine-week training regimen.

Interest piqued, I googled.  You can find the site here.  The Podrunner has mixes for 5k, 8k, and 10k training programs.

You can also find the Podrunner podcast on iTunes.

Now, don’t be thinking that I’m planning on running a 5k.  AuburnChick is not that coordinated.  I can hardly walk across a room without tripping.

What I like about training for a 5k is the fact that I’m building endurance and stamina, and I’m challenging myself in the process.

I downloaded all nine-weeks worth of music and loaded them on my phone, which serves as my mp3 player.

After dropping Rooster off at Band Camp, I headed out.

The first few minutes were fine.  Heck, I can walk with the best of them.  The music, I’ll admit, is not my favorite.  It’s some sort of electric mix.  Whatever, I figured.  I can tolerate it for 29 minutes.

I listened to the introduction and then walked to the five-minute warm-up.

And then…

The sound…

The sound that indicates it is now time to run…

Oh

My

Goodness.

You run for one minute and walk for a longer period of time.  And that’s how you get through your three miles.

The first few running phases were okay.

It grew old.

Very quickly.

I cannot tell you how much I dreaded THE SOUND.

“Oh crap,” was the only thing I said.

Imagine me…walking for three minutes, hearing that sound, and uttering those words.

Over, and over, and over.

The rare exception was when I told myself, “C’mon Nathalie.  You can do it.  It’s only 60 seconds.”  The music got a bit on my nerves.  I suspect it was about the time I almost puked in the street.  But no, I didn’t stop.

By the time I got back to the garage, my legs were spent.

When I walked into the house, Chicky took one look at me and asked just how out-of-shape I was…if walking did that to me.

She didn’t know I’d actually run part of the way.

I cooled down, did a bit of upper body work with weights, and rewarded myself with a shower.

That was Day 1.

Today I allowed myself a rest from the Podrunner plan.  You’re supposed to train for three days and rest in-between.

I still wanted to get in some cardio, so I pulled my bike off of the rack in the garage.

Poor bike.  I’ve had it for ten years or so.  The Mr. and I spent a pretty penny on our bikes, and we had fun when we lived in South Florida.  There are sidewalks everywhere, making it a safe place to ride with the family.

Since moving up to no-man’s land, we have hardly used them.

I decided that riding my bike would be a lot easier than walking, and it would be a nice change of pace.

Yeah, right.

I got halfway down my street before the burn started.

My quads screamed for mercy.

Prior to climbing on the bike, I had formed a grand plan of riding around the neighborhood twice.  It’s roughly 2.8 miles one time around.  How great would it be to say I rode 5.6 miles?!

My legs laughed at me as I huffed and puffed and pedaled my way around each cul-de-sac.  I took the long way, not wanting to give in to defeat.

When at last I arrived home, I almost couldn’t get off of the bike.

That’s how sore I was.

A couple of glasses of water later, I finished off my workout by going through the five leg exercises here.  I had to focus on the how-to’s, so I put the computer on the floor for one of the exercises…

My poor body.  Muscles that were existing happily in hibernation land have been awakened, and boy are they grumpy.

I, for one, am thrilled.  Once I manage to cool off after each workout, I have a high that you can’t get from many things (chocolate included).  I feel good knowing that I’m doing something…anything…for my body.

Things like music can be tweaked.  I found a site that has Christian Indie tracks set to the same 5k program.  You can find it here.  The exercises can be tweaked, both to keep things interesting and to dump what doesn’t work for my body.

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading out for the second day of 5k running.  If you see a crazed lady adorned in running attire muttering to herself, that will probably be me.

Have mercy…don’t honk.  Just pray.  😀

AuburnChick Succumbs to Temptation

BRIEF INTERRUPTION…

Littlest Chick will henceforth be referred to as Rockin Rooster. Thanks, Megan, from the Stitch-It Ravelry forum, for this suggestion! We mulled over each idea very carefully and decided that this name fit the bill nicely, being something he will not outgrow as he ages.

AND NOW, BACK TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAM…

AuburnChick has hit the road again. Soccer Chick’s team is playing in a national tournament in Virginia Beach, so we loaded up the car and headed out Thursday afternoon.

Packing for this almost week-long, 13-hour each way trip proved challenging. As fellow knitters, I’m sure you can identify with the following scene.

I arrived home from taking the kids to youth group and decided to get busy preparing for the trip. What’s the first thing a knitter packs when going on a trip? Clothes? Um, no. Toiletries? Wrong-o. Of course, it’s the knitting that goes into the bag first. Clothes and other stuff go in last, and if there’s no room, my motto is that you buy them when you get to your destination.

I currently have three works in progress. This is way more than the one I usually have, but into the bag they went, along with all possibly-needed accessories and patterns.

Next, I decided to pack yarn and needles for the charity blankets I hope to cast on this week. I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before, but I am heading up the West Coast Oddball Baby Blanket project that’s based over on KnittingHelp.com. You’ve seen the other blankets I’ve worked on. Well, wonderful Shandeh, brave leader of the entire project, decided to split the country into regions to make the project more manageable. I was asked to coordinate one region. I’m very excited about this. I created a blog for the project, found here. My region covers the states of California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and Hawaii. If you live in one of these states and want to participate, please let me know. We have a thread going over on Ravelry in case you’re not on KH, so you can stay connected there as well. Or, you don’t have to be a part of either site. Just drop me a line, and I’ll explain how the project works. It’s a fabulous way to use your talents to benefit others…without having to make a humongous time commitment to knit an entire blanket.

Within 30 minutes, I had filled up two bags with knitting supplies. My family was not amused that half of our trunk is devoted to my hobby addiction.

Now, being the techie that I am, I also cannot leave home without my gadets. Enter in my laptop, with its 17″ screen (aka a LARGE computer bag), and my new camera.

Oh, I didn’t tell you about that yet? Well, remember that my old camera was kicking the bucket. It finally quit sputtering and completely died. I just cannot be without a camera. My blog requires the frequent posting of pictures, plus I want to capture every drop of sweat that Soccer Chick works up on the field.

After much inquiring and research, I finally went to Best Buy, where I totally disregarded everything I had previously read and fell into the tech trap that frequently engulfs me the moment I step foot into that place. To be fair, I passed by the $899 cameras. There’s a line I won’t cross, and that was it. Stepping over to the cheaper aisle, I was quickly overwhelmed by all of the shiny gadgets. I was like a kid in a candy store…I wanted everything!

Timing is everything. At that very moment, Mr. Young Salesman appeared at my elbow.

“Hello, you look like you’re confused and thus willing to spend an exorbitant amount of money right now. Allow me to lead you down the path to debt.”

Yeah, that was me alright. And boy did he lead me astray. It was almost like he had chocolate in his pocket, and my sniffers knew that and followed blindly behind him.

Sure, I’ll take that expensive camera that happens to be on sale this week (of course).

4gb memory card, that’s also on sale this week? Of course. Why not. I’m gullible today.

Extra warranty? In case I drop my camera in the toilet? Sure thing! You go boy. Ring it up!

To my credit, I bought the generic camera bag.

I walked out of there the proud new owner of a Nikon Coolpix P80. It’s got 10.1 megapixels and 18x optical zoom. No longer will I have to wait until the second half of the game when Soccer Chick is on my side of the field. I can photograph ever hair of her unshaven leg from across the park, if I want. I’m sure she’ll appreciate this comment, but since she doesn’t read my blog (thinks it’s stupid, but what does she know), who cares.

Here are a few of the pictures I’ve taken so far…

This is Ziggy, Soccer Chick’s teammate’s dog…

I plan on posting more pictures from Virginia. I can’t wait! The scenery is beautiful up there, which should give me ample opportunity to play with my new toy.

Thank Goodness for Podcasts

I traveled this weekend…which probably doesn’t surprise you by now. This is the busiest time of the season for us. With another round of state playoffs right around the corner, the team is taking every opportunity to practice. Living across state from most of the players has proven to be a challenge. The solution has been to practice in Jacksonville every other weekend. It’s a haul but well worth it.

So, it was my turn to take daughter to practice. I really don’t mind because I get in good knitting time without the responsibility of taking care of the house and pets.

I loaded up the yarn I bought for the the comfort throw along with the latest oddball baby blanket that I received in the mail on Thursday. I worked on it during daughter’s scrimmage. The name of the blanket is Rainbow Joy, with each knitter using the color, in order, in the rainbow. I used Caron Simply Soft, and the color is Limelight. Because it’s garter stitch, I was able to knit and watch the game without looking down much.

With this blanket done and ready to travel again, I felt like I could concentrate on the comfort throw for my friend. However, after completing the garter border and one row of the pattern, I discovered that the pattern has mistakes. Grrr…

So, I put the blanket away and planned to find a pattern online.

With that done, and two practice sessions still ahead of me, I decided to pull out my sock and continue working on it. I got two more rounds done. Pretty good!

After practice, we began our trip home. Thank goodness for podcasts! I had downloaded the latest editions of some that I had subscribed to, so I was all set. I have a power converter box with two outlets, so daughter and I could both plug in our laptops. My Macbook Pro came with a remote control that I’ve never used before. It’s the handiest little gadget!

I used it to get to my iTunes menu and play my podcasts! I caught up with Diva Knitting and Part 2 of her sock-along. She had some handy tips about short-row heels. Then, I listened to the KnitPicks podcast. Next was Ready, Set, Knit, which is the WEBS podcast. Guests were the Yarn Harlot and Melissa Morgan Oakes, the author of Two Socks at a Time! It was fabulous! I also listened to Knit Together, a wonderful Christian podcast in which practical knitting topics were addressed in this edition. Next was Stitch It. Meghan includes a lot of information about spinning.  Knitting Rose is always a must-listen. She’s such a doll! And last, but not least, was the weekend edition of Way of the Master.

I was in happy land! The hours flew by, and before I knew it, I was pulling into my driveway.

Well, I’m off to look for patterns for a simple, quick throw.
