New Projects

You know I am not content to finish one project without casting on another.

I’ve actually got two projects going right now.

You already know about the Mexican Rainbow Shawl.  I’m using Vanna’s Choice yarn, a gift from one of my Bible study friends.

I’m experiencing a bit of anxiety about this project because the pattern was written for DK yarn.  Vanna’s Choice is a heavy worsted.  I debated about modifying the pattern but decided against it.  The center is supposed to be a square.  You can see, in the picture below, that this isn’t the case.  I’m currently working on the short rows that will allow the blanket to take on a semicircle appearance before actually becoming a circle.  It looks a bit wonky, but I hope things wind up working out in the end.

As you can see, the shawl is already rather large, so I decided to begin work on a second project…one that is more portable.

A KnittingHelp friend saw the last prayer shawl I made (the crochet one) and asked if I would be willing to make her one.  She’s having some trouble with her hands.  She is a generous lady, heading up the Canadian Oddball Baby Blanket Project.  I adore her, so it was an easy yes.

She requested black.  I think that’s a smart color to go with.  It will match just about anything she chooses to wear it with.

Here’s my progress so far, after five days…

We’re not traveling this weekend or next, so I hope to finish the black shawl and make significant progress on the other one.  I’m already scheming as to what I’ll put on my needles next.  I’m thinking socks!

A Shawl for AuburnChick

I did it!

I finished my Swallowtail Lace Shawl!  First, the info…

The pattern is free, available here.  I used less than one skein of Malabrigo Lace yarn.  The color is “Forest.”  I used size 4 needles and completed the pattern without any modifications.

Now, on to the pictures before more detailed information…

This is the first lacy shawl I’ve made, and I’m so pleased with the way it turned out.  It was a struggle, as you probably remember.  I had a heck of a time with the nupps.  I figured out that you have to unwrap the yarn from the hand you’re feeding it through when doing the k1, yo, k1, yo, k1 in preparation for the nupps.  Then, when you purl back, purling those stitches as a p5tog, it’s much, much easier.  Trust me…I learned the hard way.

Then, I had a bit of trouble keeping my stitch count.  I kept a stitch marker just after the center stitch and kept a running count on each side of it.  I also found that highlighting the pattern (after Dustina’s comment) was a great way to stay on track.  After completing every odd row, I wrote down the number of stitches, confirming that I had the correct number each time.

After binding off, I had to block it.

I like blocking just about as much as I like making a gauge swatch.

I have the lace blocking wires from Knit Picks, and I’ve tried using them for other projects, but I’ve never quite gotten the hang of it.  I decided to do a bit of research first.  Coincidentally, Knitting Daily posted this right before I was ready to block the shawl, and I also found this video through a different email from Knitting Daily:

Armed with this information, I went out hunting for a foam playmat and checkered cloth.  I finally found the mat at Toys r U:

The package included four of these squares…a very nice size for blocking.

Then, I found the fabric on sale at Joann’s.  Together, they looked like this:

I spent oodles of time pinning and adjusting the wires.  Here’s what it looked like when I was done…

I almost had tears in my eyes when I got finished.  It looked like someone with a lot more knitting know-how had been in my house.

So, where will I wear this shawl?

On the seven-night cruise that the in-laws are treating the family to the week of Thanksgiving.

Wipe the drool off your face.

We’re heading to the south Caribbean.  The Mr.’s parents go on a couple of cruises a year and decided that we would celebrate Chicky’s upcoming graduation and Rooster and my oldest nephew’s upcoming 16th birthdays (I know…Rooster isn’t even 15 yet).

Whatever the reason, I’ll take it.

And I’ll take along my new shawl!

Another Adventure!

Yesterday, we spent around nine hours in the car.  Chicky’s team is playing in the Final Four, and the hotel is in West Palm Beach.

Now, you know that we’re always traveling…have been for about six years running.  We’ve been in about every type of fast food and sit-down restaurant, gas station, and hotel.  I should be paid to critique them…that’s how much of a pro I am.

First off, we stopped at what is rated as the #1 Chick fil A franchise in Florida (according to my father-in-law).  I didn’t know this beforehand, as the first place I stopped was the restroom.  Before I got there, we were greeted by a manager, who welcomed us to the location.  He was walking the floor, speaking to the patrons.  Wow!

Folks, there were two tables in the ladies room.  One had an assortment of feminine products.  The other had flowers and other stuff that I can’t remember.  But, it was nice.  Clean.  Stocked with hand towels as well as an air dryer.

Then, as I sat and waited for the Mr. to bring our food to the table, another employee, dressed very professionally with a Chick fil A nametag, asked if I was waiting to place my order.  After telling her I was set, she walked away to assist another customer.

I watched as managers sporting long-sleeve, button-down shirts ran the cash register, assisted by crisp, polo-wearing employees.  All had sincere smiles on their faces.  It was apparent that they were working in an environment they truly enjoyed.

I commented to the manager who stopped by halfway through out meal how impressed I was, explaining how frequently we travel.  It’s called fast food for a reason…in and out…no frills.  He said that he tells his employees that the restaurant begins at the property line.

Good point.

We’ll make sure we visit that location the next time we’re in town.

Onward we went, to our final destination…a Hawthorn Suites that is so new it doesn’t come up on the GPS.

When we inserted the key, we were amazed to see this:

I’m sitting at the table below…blogging right now…flat screen above me…

Walking down the little hallway, we saw this:

And the bathroom…well, what can I say?  It plays a very important role in your get-away experience:

And look at the vanity!  NOBODY puts a vanity in their bathroom!  With a make-up mirror too!

Now, I know what you are thinking.  This must be costing me an arm and a leg.

Well, not quite.  I think I heard the Mr. say that we’re paying $95 per night.  I consider this a good rate considering the amenities.  I mean, there’s tile throughout…the lobby, the elevator.  It’s truly gorgeous!

Saturday morning loomed with nothing to do.  The girls don’t play until 5pm, so we had the entire day in front of us.

What does AuburnChick do when she has this much free time on her hands…in a new city…

See if you can guess from this picture…

You see, I feel like I have a responsibility to my readers (all three of you).  You know I travel, so you naturally expect me to find the best yarn stores around…just in case you might take a trip to the same location.  It was me, after all, who brought you those wonderful pictures from Las Vegas and New Orleans.

Thank goodness for the GPS on my phone.  I must have been a good girl because “she” didn’t cop an attitude this time…i.e. I made no u-turns.

The ladies at Just ImaginKnit were fabulous, as was the selection of yarn.  There was a group of ladies sitting at the table, and as they spoke with their New York accents, I was taken back to the time when I lived in Coral Springs…whose residents had migrated from up north.

Now, I consider it rude to spend time in a yarn store without making a purchase.  Especially since I’m not a “regular.”  If I had my own yarn store and could attend knit nights, then I wouldn’t feel obligated to get anything.

That’s a pretty lame justification, isn’t it?

Ok, ok.  I caved the beautiful color and feel of the yarn.   Hello, my name is AuburnChick, and I’m addicted to buying soft, hand-dyed yarn…especially if it comes in 100g sock weight…

As I left, I gazed upon the window lovingly one last time…

And then I hoofed it back to the hotel so Soccer Chick could get her sneakers out of the back of the car and do some warm-exercises in the parking lot with the team.

If you’re reading this before 5pm, please say a prayer for us…that Chicky would not be injured, and that she would use the talent that God has blessed her with to the best of her ability.

A Teaser (Or Two…or Three)

Ok…so I’m not playing nice this morning.  But the cupcake was good!  If you’ll recall, I made a batch of them yesterday.  Chicky teaches a group of middle school girls at church on Wednesday afternoons, and one of her pupils is moving next week.  She wanted to give her a proper send-off.  I fit all but two in a couple of rubbermaid containers.  I ate one and phtographed the other.

In knitting news, take a look at this:

It’s my Swallowtail Lace Scarf.  I still need to block it, but it felt soooooo good to get it off my needles yesterday!  It currently measures 32″ across the top.  I’m going to run out and get more T-pins and a spongy play mat to block it on.  I cannot wait to see how it turns out!

With that project almost complete, I jumped right into another one…the Mexican Rainbow Shawl I told you about before.  Here’s what I have so far:

That’s the beginnings of the center rectangle.  The pattern calls for a garter stitch, but the picture in the book looks like it’s another stitch.  I guessed at the Trinity Stitch and have, thus, already “customized” this shawl.  Although the stitch is not a lot of fun to execute, I think it looks divine!  The shawl will be traveling with me as we drive to south Florida for Chicky’s big games this weekend.

I Didn’t Buy These, I Promise

Two bags of yarn…that’s what I saw when I walked into the empty room at church.  It was Wednesday night…time for Bible study with the ladies.  When I began meeting with this group, I discovered that one of the ladies was a knitter.  She’s been knitting a little while but is not overly confident in herself yet, preferring to stick with the easiest stitches.  We’ve formed a friendship, and I’ve been encouraging her to try new patterns.

Any good knitting friend will, naturally, enable another.  She buys the newest issues of magazines, and I run out to get them.  She buys a new book, and I do the same.  I discover a fabulous yarn store in New Orleans, and she visits and spends $150.

It’s a friendship made in heaven.

When I saw the bags of yarn, I figured they belonged to her.  We’re always showing off our latest cast-ons and talking about upcoming projects.

When she walked in, she nonchalantly picked up the bags and deposited them on the table in front of me.

They were for me.  For a shawl I’ve been ogling in this book, recently purchased with a 40% coupon at Hobby Lobby:

The pattern is for a Mexican Shawl:

As I pulled the yarn out of the bags, I counted them…12 skeins of Vanna’s Choice…in six different colors!

I am so touched that she would do this for me.  She has been personally affected by the financial woes that many of us have…a husband who only recently became employed again after being laid off…a house up for sale…a son newly home from Iraq…

To do something like this with pure excitement on her face…

A true blessing.

And a relief that I can honestly tell the Mr. that I didn’t buy more yarn.

My Knitting Challenge

I know I’ve been rather quiet the last couple of days.  That’s because I’ve been immersed in my latest project…the Swallowtail Lace Shawl.

I plugged along at a crisp pace, easily mastering the first big chart.  The 14 repeats were a piece of cake.  Since this is my first shawl, I thought I must be pretty good at this knitting thing.

How the proud fall.

I hit chart #2 and totally hit a wall.

By now, there are about 200 stitches on the needle.  How do I know this?  Because I’ve counted them.  More times than I can recall.

Why have I counted them so many times?  Well, because I keep coming up with one or two too many.

And you know what that means.

Tinking.

Ugh.

Last night, I tinked back at least three rows.  Not funny.

Add that to the nupps that I had to learn how to do, and…well…I’m not exactly thinking I’m the All-Knowing-Knitter any more.

I made a little bit of progress this afternoon before doing another count and, again, coming up with one too many stitches.

Argh!!!

I tinked back again, discovered one stinking extra yarn over, and re-knit that row.

And now I’ve stopped.

I’m seriously considering putting it down for now, but to do so would be to fail the challenge.  I’m not a quitter.

So, if I seem a bit quiet, you’ll know why.

A Day Off

You’ve just gotta love Fridays.  Especially when you have the day off.

Now, I could have easily slept in or stayed in my jammies.  In fact, Mr. AuburnChick commented, on his way to bed, that we could both sleep until 12 if we wanted.  He’s been working a lot of overtime and is exhausted.  However, I chose to get up, shower, and dress.

Rather than lying low…playing my day by ear, I actually have a plan.

I have to get the oil changed in my car.  We have another long car trip in a few weeks, so I need to make sure my vehicle is in proper working order.

I’m also on the hunt for Bernat Satin.  A couple of days ago, I used a 50% coupon at Joann’s to buy this pamphlet, which you can order from anniesattic.com:

My church is starting a prayer shawl ministry.  Knitting an entire shawl on my own seems a daunting task, so I’ve decided to try to crochet one.  I’ve heard that crocheting is faster than knitting.  One of the patterns in this booklet struck my eye.  I went to Joann’s several times, staring at the pattern but not purchasing the booklet until the fifith time I went to the store.  I finally caved and made the purchase.  This is the shawl I want to make:

My errands will also include the obligatory trip to the bank.  Chicky got paid yesterday, so I offered to deposit it for her.

And a day of errands wouldn’t be complete with a trip to Walmart.  I need to get new toothbrush heads, and Target didn’t have the specific brand when I was there a few days ago.

I know I have cleaning to do, but I do not plan on doing much.  A load of laundry is about to visit the washing machine.  But actual dusting or sweeping?  Nawwww.

I wanna have some fun!  I’m going to work on my Swallowtail Lace Shawl.  Last night, I finished the last pattern repeat and started the first start of the lace edging.  Ahhh…such a lovely pattern and a real joy to knit!

I’m also expecting a skein of yarn from my friend Rabbitrescuer.  I’m working on a project, and I ran out with two small parts to finish!!!!  It’s a gift for someone too!  Hopefully the mailman will be delivering it to me today!

You’ve just gotta love free days, eh?!

I Ran Out of Yarn!

Ok…well, not completely, as I still have my stash.  The world has not come to an end…yet.

BUT, I did run out of yarn for my current project!  And I only have one small part and three rounds of another part to go before I start seaming!!

Ugh.

I am not a happy camper.  This yarn is not sold by local stores.  My friend, Rabbitrescuer, was gracious enough to send me the skein I used.

I’ve put out a couple of SOS calls on Ravelry.  I hope someone responds quickly.

Meanwhile, I don’t have a project on my needles!  What’s a girl to do?

Get out the laptop at midnight, of course, and start looking through Ravelry.

I’m giving serious consideration to making my first shawl.  I have two skeins of Malabrigo Lace that one of the ladies in the West Coast Oddball group sent me for my birthday.  It’s calling out to me, much like the sirens called out to the sailors of old.

Do you have any favorite patterns you’d like to share?

I’m desperate.  We’re going out of town on Thursday afternoon, and I simply MUST have something going by then.  I mean, can you imagine me, in a car for eight or nine hours, with no knitting to keep me occupied?  I might actually talk to the family!  Or worse…I might sing along to the radio.

My kids beg you…submit your ideas…and quickly…before their ears fall off from Mama talk.

Hmmm…this could be the ultimate revenge for the last few years of teenage angst they’ve thrown upon me…

Naw…I want to salvage what teensy bit of sanity I have left.

MUST

FIND

PATTERN

Shetland Shorty

Despite a busy day (more about that in the next post), I managed to finish my Shetland Shorty.

I started it last Saturday, when I couldn’t find the yarn I needed for my next project.  You can find the free pattern here.

I used less than two skeins (170 grams to be exact) of South West Trading Company Bamboo…yarn I bought in Las Vegas last year.

I made the second size listed on the pattern, and it’s a great fit!  I used sizes 3 and 2 needles instead of those recommended in the pattern.  I never actually did a gauge swatch (bad girl, I know), so I felt like going up a bit would be fine.

I have to say that I am so pleased and surprised.  Sure, I’ve made socks, baby hats, and other cute things.  But sweaters have always scared me.  Completing this project, with the success I achieved, has bolstered my self-confidence.  I will definitely be more inclined to take on a more intricate “wearable” item in the future.

On to the pictures!

Molly Visits the Vet…Again

Sigh…

Whatever am I going to do with this adorable dog of mine.

Molly, my escape artist, decided to jump over the fence on Monday.  No problem…regular thing with her.

Well, I heard her and ran out the garage to intercept her.  She usually starts running down the street after clearing the fence; however, this time, she ran straight to me…limping along the way.

Great.  She landed funny, I guess, and she knew she was hurt.

I kept a close eye on her during the next few days.  She would usually limp after waking up from a nap.  No problem.  She’s stiff, I thought.

Well, yesterday (Friday), I took a look at her leg, and it was almost twice the size it normally is.  It was hard as a rock too.

I quickly googled “swollen puppy legs”.  My search led me to the conclusion that she’s probably got an infection of some sort.  Her leg was very warm when compared to the other leg.  Another sign of infection.

This morning, I called up a vet that’s open on Saturdays and made an appointment.  When I got there, I noticed a red spot on the back of her leg…it was oozing.

Ewww…

Apparently, Molly has an abscess.  It chose today to bust through the skin.

The vet wanted to x-ray her leg, but at an additional cost of $300, factoring in the anesthesia.  I was torn.  I love her, but I do not have the money to go to such lengths to diagnose what might only be a sprain.

I made the difficult decision to just start her on the antibiotics.  If the limp doesn’t improve after a round of antibiotics, I’ll let them do the x-ray and put her in a splint.

Meantime, the doctor cleaned up her leg and, in the process, discovered several bite marks…probably the cause of the abscess.

Now, I haven’t allowed Aubie and Molly to be together.  So, I know it’s not due to that.

Nope.  I think the culprit is Pele.  He’s almost 80 pounds but thinks he’s about 10.  He has a ginormous jaw that probably accidentally tore into Molly’s leg when they were playing this week.  They place rough but not mean.

Sigh…

It’s always something, isn’t it?

Now Molly is sporting a fancy shaved do on her leg…another shameful walk out to the car walking the length of the store because the vet is located in the back.  At least her tongue wasn’t hanging out of her mouth this time.

Sigh…

On another note, I’ve made progress on my Shetland Shorty:

Shetland Shorty

Shetland Shorty

I just finished shaping the front and will now begin the 18 repeats for the back.  Oy…I’m tired of k2tog’s and double yarn-overs.   What a gorgeous texture though!

Oh, and one other thing.  I started going through a bag of clothes that Chicky put together from her room…stuff to give away or sell.  It would seem that I’m going shopping…for me…out of her pile of clothes…

There’s an assortment of clothes.  I hope I can fit into the blue jeans.  I wear a smaller size than her (because she has muscular thighs that require a little bigger size).

It’s kind of sad when you have to borrow from your kids’ closets to enhance your own wardrobe.  Oh well, I’ve never minded hand-me-downs…no matter the source.
