Day 1 – The Great Adventure

When last I left off, our crew of ten was preparing for a great adventure.

I woke up early…5:45am…the time difference telling on me…along with the excitement of the day ahead.

As I quietly got ready in the hotel’s bathroom while my family slept, Chicky popped her head in.

She, too, had not been able to sleep in.

In fact, all three families woke up in our respective rooms around the same time.

I grabbed a healthy breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant…

Unfortunately, the fruit was not very good…sad to say.  Most of it was hard and just not ripe.  Oh well.  I knew I’d be eating good soon enough.

We applied our luggage tags to our bags for the next part of our journey, met the shuttle that Coupon Queen had prearranged, and headed out, taking photos along the way…

The next photo will give you a better clue of where we were (but not where we would wind up)…

So, we were in Seattle.

But, what were we doing there?

Well, that’s for me to know and for you to soon find out.

We arrived at our destination and unloaded the many bags that the driver had somehow fit into the van.

And that’s when we saw it…

Our next mode of transportation…

Hola, cruise ship!

Oh yeah, baby.

This, my friends, is the Westerdam.

We were headed on our third cruise as a large group (my fourth total).

Although Coupon Queen and Grand Pooba have been on a number of Holland America cruises, this would be my family’s second one with this cruise line.  Prior to that, we’ve been on a Disney cruise.

The check-in process was fairly painless.

I wasn’t surprised when I got pulled aside to empty out the contents of my knitting bag.  The scanner had shown the small pliers I keep for repairs to stitch markers.  The security guard raised his eyebrows at me.

Seriously…pliers…me…with all that yarn in my bag?

He let me keep my tool and rejoin my family.

At least I wasn’t patted down like an elderly woman I saw standing one line over.

We waited in a huge room while various groups were called for.

I asked a lady to take a group picture of us, which I can’t show you because then you’d see what beautiful creatures we are.

We were even more beautiful because we were all sporting Auburn apparel…my idea since Auburn had won the college football national championship in January.

It was finally our turn to board, but before we did, we posed for the “official” group photo.

Oh, my word, but the photographer was quick.  He took one large group picture, in which we placed Coupon Queen and Grand Pooba in the center, of course.

Then, the photographer snapped individual pictures.

It was QUICK, QUICK, QUICK.

I doubted that the pictures would be any good.

I was wrong.

The pictures were FANTASTIC!

Dang it.

We bought the group picture and the kids’ individual photos.

Anyhoo…the buying came later.

First up was the most important thing…

Depositing our carry-on bags in our rooms and eating.

Our rooms were nice…what we expected having gone on several cruises…

I loved the robes…

Which were quickly adorned properly…

We also found a complimentary bottle of champagne, from the travel agent…

After eating lunch, I grabbed my knitting and headed out to explore the ship.

The views from the various decks were impressive…

Downtown Seattle’s skyline was so different from the view I have in Podunk, USA…

On the way to the ship, we had driven close to the Space Needle.  Seeing it from the ship was something else altogether…

My knitting decided to come out and play…

Saturdays are busy days for cruise lines.  I saw the Golden Princess docked beside the Westerdam.  This ship would be our travel partner throughout the week.  One interesting fact is that four people I know were on that ship.  I was hoping to run into them when we stopped at our various ports, but that never happened.

Eventually, it was time to leave port.  The backdrop of the mountains provided a picturesque view…

Deck 10, also known as the Crow’s Nest, was a great place to take in the scenery, as Chicky is doing in the following photograph…

Then, it was time for dinner.  My dining steward provided me with a vegetarian menu…not quite the same as vegan, but it was better than nothing.  Throughout the cruise, I ate a wonderful variety of dishes.  Around night four, my steward figured out that I was vegan, and a vegan menu was provided.  Oh my word…the difference was amazing…the entire list of dishes was free of animal products, including milks and cheeses, which I can’t do regardless of what type of diet I’m eating.

Anyhoo, my first meal included the following dish…grilled asparagus and mushrooms…

The view from the dining room was of the back of the ship…such a pretty sight…

Before I knew it, the sun was going down.  As you know, sunset is my favorite time of the day.  I managed to grab a few pictures…

The sun had set on Day 1 of The Great Adventure.

Where we were heading is still a surprise.

Stay tuned!

Day 8 – Back to Ft. Lauderdale

Day 8 of the cruise was all about pulling into port and getting off the ship.

I had scheduled my family to be in the first group of people debarking the ship, so I rose at the dark hour of 5:30.  I wanted to make sure I got breakfast (Holland America tries to ensure that passengers leave the ship happy).  I took one last stroll around and caught these pictures…

I always say that sunset is my favorite time of day, but sunrise ain’t half bad either…

Another ship had pulled into port beside us.  It was soooo pretty…all lit up…

I managed to catch sight of this boat on the horizon…

Guess what else I saw…

Another plane! A fitting way to end the trip given all of my “plane sightings” throughout the cruise.

I eventually returned to the room, woke up the kids and the Mr., and finished some last-minute packing.

And then we waited.

This is often the longest part of the cruise…waiting to get called to the gangway.

While I sat, I went through some of the literature we had acquired during the trip and found this map of the ship (sure wish I’d found it on Day 1!!)…

My group was finally called, and we emerged to find that tho sun had risen…

Somewhere in the parking garage (pictured below) was our car…

Bex wanted one last photo session before leaving Ft. Lauderdale…

So long cruise ships…

As we exited, we thanked everyone we saw.  We were so pampered throughout this trip that leaving was uber-hard.

A HUGE thanks goes out to Grand Pooba and Coupon Queen for their generosity.  This was an AMAZING trip!

Day 7 – Half Moon Cay

Day 7 of the cruise was a cold one!  I couldn’t believe the wind as I opened up the door on my cabin deck to take a peek.

My group ate a quick breakfast and headed out to catch the slip to Half Moon Cay, Holland America’s private island.

The wind was cold as we made out way through the water.  I saw people riding horses at the water’s edge…

We could see people already frolicking in the water…

Sure, there were people in the water, but the sky looked ominous…

The sun refused to peek through the clouds…

The flags bore witness to the wind’s speed…

We got to the beach and found front-row lounges, where I took the opportunity to photograph Bex in front of the clear, turquoise water…

It was a little strange to see the ship sitting a couple hundred yards off shore…

The neat thing about this island…besides the water…was the soft, creamy sand.  I’ve visited many beaches over the years.  Beaches on the eastern coast of Florida have a lot of debris on it.  The Gulf Coast’s beaches consist of white sand with very little “trash” in it.  So, the sand on Half Moon Cay reminded me a bit of home…

We braved the cold, wrapped in towels.  I dug my toes into the sand…determined to wait for the sun to make an appearance…

It was comforting to see a lifeguard on duty…

The kids eventually got in the water.  They said it was warm once you got in, but they were quick to wrap up in towels when they came out.  The sand caked on the bottom of Chicky’s feet while she tried to warm up…

Super D, my brother-in-law, is very artistic, so when he saw the sand, he quickly realized he had a huge canvas to work on.  This was his work of art…

Auburn almost delivered in THE BIG GAME...but not quite...

And still we waited for the sun…which finally made a brief appearance…

The towels came off as we took the opportunity to tan our legs…

From left to right...Grand Pooba, Coupon Queen, and the Mr.

The island had a few amenities for its guests.  One was a tiki hut.  This sign was posted above it…

On a warmer day, this sentiment would have been especially true

By 11:00, we were starving and more than ready for the barbecue lunch the ship’s crew had prepared for us.  There was a band playing “island music,” which added to the Caribbean feel.

Later, I saw people walking around with some kind of koozies, and I just had to have one.  I was already seeing myself taking one to work…filled with ice water, of course.

The koozies were being sold in the tiki hut I’d spied above, so I did what any vacationer would do and got myself one…

By this time, Chicky and I were ready to head back to the ship.  We had never completely warmed up and were eager for hot showers, so we caught a slip back “home.”  I saw the sun make an appearance…great…perfect timing, as usual…

Once aboard, I walked around the ship, taking photos of the island…

From this view, you can sort-of see how the island gets its name...from its half-moon shape...

The sun invited me to come back out to play, but I resisted…

Bex insisted on another photo...

While the others were still playing on the beach, Chicky and I began the dreary process of packing…

Later in the afternoon, after everyone had returned to the ship, the kids and I attended the Debarking Session.  Passengers were lured there by the promise of free champagne…

Dinner that night was melancholy as we had to say goodbye to our table attendants…

Trisna was a very humble, quiet man who unobtrusively filled our water and iced tea glasses.

We were treated to a parade of the Baked Alaska, which had been specially prepared by the chefs.  It was a wonderful way to end the trip.

As I lay my head on my pillow that night, I thought about all of the sights I had seen and the nice people I had met.  Although I was sad the trip was coming to an end, I was starting to get excited about seeing my furry babies.

But still, I had the morning of Day 8 to look forward to…

Day 6 – Thanksgiving on the Ocean

Day 6 of the cruise was Thanksgiving!  It felt a little strange not prepping for lunch at Chez AuburnChick, although I will admit to a bit of guilty joy at not having to coordinate the cook times of half a dozen dishes.

As the ship lazily made its way northwestward, we settled in for commitment-free day.

We all took time to admire the bling we had acquired during our recent shopping forays…

Rooster's new shoes...from the exotic store Foot Locker, which was located in St. Thomas.

I really like the bracelet I purchased in St. Thomas.

The shop on the ship held a big sale outside on the poolside deck.  Rooster picked up this…

Because I ran out of t-shirts during the trip, I felt justified in getting these…

The frogs on the white shirt reminded me of Senor Frog in Puerto Rico

Despite our lack of activity, we managed to keep our room stewards busy.  They left us this cute animal after their morning clean-up session…

Dog!

Days at sea are all about relaxing in the sun…

And knitting…

I took a peek at the daily program, which listed a bunch of activities…

The kids and I took in a movie, enjoying the popcorn that the crew provided in neat little snack sacks.

Lunch came and went, as did Team Trivia.  The sun continued to shine…ahhhh…so beautiful…

What a lovely day it was, only enhanced by the fine dinner awaiting us…

Shrimp Cocktail...so yummy that I ordered a second (I'm such a pig sometimes)

Steak! Not very traditional for Thanksgiving, I know, but the turkey came with sweet potatoes, which I can't stand!

Fruit and cheese for dessert

Super Sis got the dessert below.  If you look closely, you’ll see that her pie is broken into two pieces.  We teased her because she had given our table attendant a fit when trying to order her dinner.  She changed her mind so often that she confused him.  Hence, we told her the chef was mad at her and sent out an imperfect dessert.  heehee

And so ended Day 6.  As the waves rocked me gently to sleep, I began to dream about Day 7…

Day 5 – St. Thomas

When I awoke on Day 5 of the cruise, I discovered that the weather had cooled off a bit.  Yay!  Oh, it was still plenty warm enough for shorts and flip-flops, but it wasn’t muggy.

Here’s the view that greeted me from my cabin’s deck…

An absolutely pristine day…

We debated about our best course of action for the day and then headed off to explore…

The above picture struck me because of the rocky waterfront.  I found it beautiful.

I saw this windmill.  I’m not sure of its significance, but it was an interesting sight…

As we had encountered at the other islands we had visited, we were immediately inundated with touristy shops.  The sign on the store below caught my attention…

In one of the shops, my nephew, Dr. J, dropped a small glass trinket.  Grandpooba and Coupon Queen came to the rescue as only grandparents can and paid for the item (we were all trying to save our cash).  Poor Dr. J…he felt really bad until Rooster and the Mr. went up to him and presented him with the necklace that was inside.  “Well, at least I got something out of it,” Dr. J responded.  That lifted his spirits.

We secured a taxi and headed to the shopping district.  Along the way, I caught sight of a Disney ship…

At first, everyone stuck together, but it didn’t take us long to figure out that ten people filled those small shops to capacity…not to mention that we all had different interests.

So, we split off with my family lucking out and finding this corridor of shops tucked in between the buildings…

It was also where I found a much needed restroom.  Just a note…watch the toilets in public restrooms…mine squirted water from the bottom of the bowl!  Talk about icky and scary!  It provided a good laugh though.

We found a really cute store that sold necklaces and gave out samples of rum balls.

Coupon Queen and I had no idea what rum balls were, so each of us grabbed one to taste.

While we were chomping away, the owner of the shop mentioned how potent the rum balls were…telling us that if we were not used to drinking, one would have us well on our way to partying.

You should have seen Coupon Queen’s face.  Fortunately she had not been the pig I had been and had only bitten off half of her treat.  She gingerly put the other half in a napkin, commenting, though, on how delicious they were.  We all got a good laugh out of that.  Oh, and for the record, mine did not bother me, and no it wasn’t because I’m a party animal.  Perhaps they weren’t as potent as the store owner was billing them to be.

Anyhoo…

We finished our shopping and headed back to the main drag to meet up with the rest of the group.  While we were waiting for everyone to catch up, we spied this interesting person…

I have no idea what he was doing as I was a little leery and took this picture from afar.

Meanwhile, Coupon Queen had secured a sweet deal for a tour of the entire island, so we went to meet up with the guide.  While we waited on the bus, Super Sis showed me what Dr. J had purchased…

Aren’t they the cutest little things?

I inspected the boo boo I had acquired the very first day on the trip when the cabin deck’s door slammed into my heel…

It doesn’t look like much, but its location was bad…where my foot pivots up and down when navigating stairs, tour buses, etc.  Oy!

Pretty soon, the tour bus (open-air, thank goodness) was full, and we departed.

St. Thomas is one GORGEOUS island.  It actually boasts a collection of smaller islands.

I was surprised to discover how mountainous it is!  The scenery reminds me of the show Lost…

In its early days, St. Thomas was home to many pirates…among them the notorious Bluebeard and Blackbeard, who hated one another.  They could see each others’ castles from their own and even tried shooting cannons at each other!

We visited Bluebeard’s castle…

There is a hotel attached to the castle these days…

Our tour guide pointed out Blackbeard’s castle from where we were standing (see the flag atop the tower?)…

One of the neat things about this island is the wildlife you see wherever you go…

The local flowers add color to an already lovely corner of the world…

We left the castle and proceeded.  The goal?  Get to the top of the island.  On the way, we were treated to some hair-raising sights…

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable…having lived on the island most of his life…

He pointed out his own home as we drove along…

Because the bus was open-air, we were able to take a lot of pictures as the elevation got higher and higher…

Not only did we go up the island, but we also went around the island.  I had no idea that one side of the island boasted the Caribbean Ocean and the other the Atlantic.  I took this picture of the Caribbean side, where (if I can remember correctly), real estate is much more expensive.  I guess this would be considered the “ritzy” side of town…

As you’ve probably noticed, no matter where you go in St. Thomas, there is plenty of water which means there’s also plenty of beaches.  Our guide dropped us off at one and allowed us to explore for a half an hour.

My goal was finding a bathroom.

There was a water park beside the beach, but to go to the bathroom, you had to pay $1.

You know me…I’ve gotten cheap since being laid off.  I was not going to pay $1, so I headed to the beach, where I’d heard there was another bathroom.

I spoke to the gal renting snorkeling equipment, and she told me there was a porta potty on the beach.

Ugh.

I absolutely cannot stand those things.

After soccering it for ten plus years, I have seen my share of them, and I simply refuse to go.  I’d rather find a bunch of trees to run into than go into a nasty potty booth.

So, I sucked it up and borrowed a dollar from Coupon Queen.  I was, after all, on vacation.  I wanted a clean bathroom.

I did feel bad a little later on though after I remembered what our tour guide had told us.  The island does not have fresh water on its own.  It has to have it brought in.  So, water is a premium…hence the fee to potty.

I was humbled.  How much I take for granted in the good ole US of A.

Knowing the above facts about the short water supply, you’ll understand the reason for the following…

Um, yeah, that’s for people who come off the beach and want to rinse the sand off their feet.

We chose to wipe our’s off with our socks.

We continued our tour.

One thing that astounded me was the large number of humongous houses built into the hills…

I'll take one of these for Christmas if it comes fully paid off with a cook, a maid, and a gardener.

Can you imagine owning the home above and looking out your window at this every day…

And this…

The boats look like toys!!

I never tired of the sights…

At times, we were able to spot our ship…

As you know, what goes up must come down, and so it was for us.  On the return trip, the driver stopped so we could take pictures of this…

See the iguana in the brush?

The trip down was much shorter, and we soon found ourselves shaking our guide’s hand and returning back to the ship.

Bex decided I had ignored her long enough and demanded a photo session, with the island providing a lovely backdrop…

There was a Royal Caribbean ship docked beside us…

Not too long after we boarded, it started raining…

I watched as a couple of my ship’s passengers ran to the ship as it was preparing to leave port.  The warning had been given 30 minutes before, and the double-whistle blew as the gangway was raised…”Wait for us…” they hollered.

I saw others standing on their decks, watching this couple run their little hearts out.  We clapped as staff lowered the gangway, and the passengers boarded.

Folks, when the captain says to be on the ship at a certain time, you better be there.  If there’s an airport at your port of call, you’ll get left behind.  Fair enough, I say.

As we were leaving, I spotted this plane (this is getting to be a theme, eh?)…

I watched the sun go down…another sight I never tire of…

I think the next picture is my favorite out of all I took on the trip…

Dinner was delicious, as usual.

Prosciutto

A light vegetable/noodle soup

Surf and Turf were my favorite nights!! I do love seafood!

It was another two-dessert night…

Chocolate Mousse Cake and Pina Colada Brulee

Chocolate Delights on the left and Pina Cola Brulee on the right.

The chef's hat was edible white chocolate!

While we were at dinner, our room stewards were hard at work, leaving us this towel animal…

Lobster!!

Now, Day 5 was a special day as far as desserts and ship entertaining go.  While passengers were busy on the island, the chefs were keeping themselves busy preparing for the Dessert Extravaganza.  Dessert-laden tables were set up around the pool, and passengers were given time to take photos before the feasting began…

I took way more pictures, but I didn’t want you to pass out from the dehydration that your drooling would cause.

You can thank me later.

Believe it or not, I was so full from dinner and so exhausted from the day that I went to bed after taking the dessert pictures…all without sampling even one thing!!  I simply could not keep my eyes open any longer.

And the ship continued to plow its way through the ocean…en route to our next destination…

Day 4 – Puerto Rico

Ahhh…Day 4 of the cruise…another beautiful day.

I awoke to this view from my cabin deck…

That is the fort that was used to guard the island.  Just look at those rocks and water…

I ate a breakfast of fruit and cheese, enjoying the quiet deck beside the Adult Only pool.  I was the first one up in the family, so it was me, my thoughts, and the peace that a morning on the ocean brings…

I saw this…a Coast Guard landing pad…

From the ship, I couldn’t really tell what this was, but it sure was cute!

We had to wait a bit for the ship to clear customs, so our room attendants had time to make our beds and leave us our latest towel animal…

Swan!

And then it was time to go exploring!

We strolled along the pier, haggling with tour bus drivers who were trying to lure us in.  Coupon Queen used her super savings skills and drove a bargain that one driver finally agreed to.  We had to wait while he nabbed enough people to fill all of the seats.

We sat, holding our breaths, as we watched the ploy…
Were those people going to stop?  They did.  They talked.  They started to walk away.  They walked back to the driver.

They approached the bus, looking back one more time…unsure if they were going to be taken for a “ride,” literally.

Decision finally made, they climbed aboard.

We clapped.

They looked unsure until we assured them that were were fairly normal people who were eager to leave.

They sighed in relief and joined us as we waited for the next group of people.

Finally we were off.

Puerto Rico is an interesting place.  I don’t remember seeing any traffic lights, so it was a little scary as our driver navigated the roads.

The architecture was a mixture of old and new…

Courthouse? I can't remember.

The price looks great until you learn that it's per liter. The conversion works out to be about the same as at home.

The Santa sighting reminded me that we really were getting close to Thanksgiving.

It looks like Puerto Ricans enjoy their Starbucks as much as Americans.

High class shopping...in which AuburnChick is not even allowed to window shop.

Maybe this was the courthouse...on account of the flags...maybe it was the capitol...

The building was GORGEOUS.

The ceiling had murals depicting the rich history of this island nation…

Our driver took us to the old and new sections of the island.  We saw this wall near the fort…

And the old cemetery…

This is the old fort, which I had seen from the ship.  How’d you like to go sledding down that hill?

The driver dropped us off in an shopping district area that was five minutes walking distance from the ship.  It was at this shop where I found a trinket…

When we’d had our fill of the stores, we headed back to the ship where we were greeted by staff offering washcloths soaked in cold water (ahhhh…felt so good), fresh drinking water, and Purell…

The people on the left are not related to us...they are innocent bystanders in this blogger's camera lens.

Lunch was a sandwich and pasta salad…

I wiled away the afternoon catching this sight from my deck…

Because we were in a U.S. territory, everyone had cell service, so I grabbed my phone and headed up to the top deck.  As I gabbed it up with my friend, Rabbitrescuer, I admired the souvenir I’d bought myself earlier…

It's a purse made from coconut shells. Very unique!!

I watched the sun as it inched closer to the horizon…

I admired the bling I bought (the bracelet came with earrings to match)…

And the sun moved a little further down…

And then it was dinnertime, where I had crab legs as an appetizer…

I think this was fish…

And a crab cake and some other fish thing…

And then…

DESSERT!!!!

Chocolate Sponge Cake!!

Chicky and Super Sis (sporting the dress she bought at a convenience store earlier in the day) ate too much…comparing bellies after dinner (Chicky’s is on the left).  I looked around warily…wondering what onlookers might be thinking…

The sky was dark when I made my way back to my cabin’s deck…

Puerto Rico’s skyline twinkled from the island’s night life…

I loved the reflection of the lights on the water…

Another day had passed.  I was excited about what the next day would bring…

Day 3 – Grand Turk

On Day 3 of the cruise, I awoke to find the sun shining brightly.

I stepped onto the deck and saw this sign greeting the boat…

The water was absolutely GORGEOUS…

As I scanned the water, I spied this sailboat…

Grand Turk is a rather small island.  It boasts a hotel, which I easily spotted from the ship…

Looks like an oasis, eh?

My crew ate quickly.  We were eager to explore…

Yeah, the sign looked exactly like it did from my view on the ship. Imagine that.

The ship looks really big when you stand in front of it…

We walked through the “Welcome Center” and faced a courtyard of Tourist Traps…i.e. “shopping.”

I let the crew do the shopping while I took a seat outside, capturing the following pictures…

I love the palm tree in the next picture…so “island-y…”

My nephew spent some of his vacation money on this little guy…

After everyone got the tourist thing out of their systems, we were ready to tour the rest of the island.

We paid an exorbitant amount of money, splitting into two groups and climbed into our respective taxis.

The “tour” was mainly a drive across the very small island.  The driver provided various facts about the island, and I was saddened to see the state in which a majority of the population lives.

We got dropped off in the “shopping district,” which was, in reality, a few small open-air shacks.  You had to feel bad for the ladies running them.  It was, after all, about 85 degrees.  The humidity must have been near 70-80%, so it felt even hotter.

We decided to go for a stroll and saw the island’s museum…

I took the next picture to show that Grand Turkans (can you call residents of this island that?) drive on the left side of the road…

The next photo shows the famous establishment where emancipation was loudly proclaimed…

We saw real flamingos (now I know where those Miami folks get them)…

At the next sighting, we were told that John Glenn’s capsule landed about 14 miles away from the island, and he was taken to Grand Turk for physical examinations after he returned to earth.  This is something that island residents are very proud of…

After our trip back to the ship, we were ready to cool off and play trivia.  Don’t ask me how that went.

While we were gone, our room attendants had been busy…picking up discarded towels (yes, I actually showered BEFORE leaving for that hot, humid island), making up our beds, and creating this work of art…

Butterfly!

We re-visited our cabin decks, where Rooster spotted (pun intended) the following…

Yep…it was a cow…way in the middle of the island.  How he saw it is beyond me.

I filmed a bit of video (the quality isn’t the best) to give you an idea of just how small the island is…

The ship left the island fairly early in the afternoon, once again heading across the open sea…

I had my afternoon mug of peppermint tea and a cookie, which is mysteriously gone from the following picture…wonder where it went?

I did a bit of knitting…

My brother-in-law, Super D, spotted this mini-rainbow…

It was soon time to get ready for dinner…

Scallops (I think) made a delicious appetizer

Time for the entree…

Tortellini!!

Super D’s entree looked…um…interesting…

I hit the jackpot with dessert…

And yes, I did order two, thank you very much.  It’s my party, and I’ll eat two desserts if I want to…you’d order two if it happened to you (sing that to the tune of “It’s My Party”).

This was some sort of apple thing.  I took two small bites and handed it over to my nephew in a pre-arranged deal to make me look like less of an oink-oink…

Do you think I shared my chocolate mousse?

AuburnChick + chocolate = the glare of steel if you even think about it.

After that dinner, I had full belly and turned in early to prepare for the next day’s adventures…

Day 2 of Cruising the High Seas

Day 2 of the cruise was all about the open sea as it takes time to get from one location to another.

For the most part, it seemed as if we were the only people on  the big blue expanse…

However, this was a BIG holiday week, and other people apparently had the same idea.

I spotted this ship mid-morning…

Later, I spotted what I suspect to be a Disney ship…

The Eurodam kicked up some foam as it moved through the water…

Here’s a little taste of what it sounded like to sit on my deck…

After breakfast, I got comfy beside the pool for some knitting…

Lunch came and went, and the relaxing continued.

My crew headed to the Crow’s Nest for Team Trivia.  It was a battle of the sexes as we split into two groups.  The girls called ourselves Team Banana.   The boys came up with the “brilliant” name of The Lightbulbs.  They even said, “Boing,” when they posed for a photo.

Um, yeah, real “bright,” eh?  LOL

Let me just say that Team Trivia was one of my favorite activities…probably because I am a nerd.

I quickly figured out that my poor little brain hasn’t acquired a large amount of random trivia, but I did learn quite a few things…

Such as, what is a pregnant goldfish called?  Google the answer and leave a comment with the answer if you want.

Trivia was so much fun and took us to the time when we needed to prep for dinner, which was to be formal.

Let me take a moment to tell you that never, ever have I taken two showers on the same day more than two days in a row.  I am of the firm opinion that if you shower more than once, you should receive a credit for that second shower and thus not have to shower on another day.

Regardless, I did shower, again, and I did dress up in something besides blue jeans and a t-shirt.  My family was proud, and Chicky was heard to say, “See, Mama, that wasn’t so bad, was it?”

Thanks, Honey.

When we got to the dining room, this is what the table looked like…

And the menu for the night…

Is it any wonder that the primary stress of the cruise involved which dishes to order?  Oy!

You know you have a blogger in the family when she pulls out her camera and starts photographing the food…

Grand Pooba's appetizer

My appetizer

Surf and Turf! Yummmmmmm

After dinner, I headed back to the room, where I discovered this towel animal…

Stingray!!

Along with the stingray were these items…

Two beach bags, information about the next day’s port, and the ever-famous chocolates.  Yum!

I headed to bed to prepare for Day #3…

AuburnChick Goes Cruising

Hi all!

I’m back…not that you knew I was gone thanks to the handy-dandy feature in WordPress that allows users to schedule posts to appear whenever we decide.

For safety reasons, the Mr. asked me not to put some cutesy saying like, “AuburnChick can’t come to the blog right now because…”

He was worried that some savvy computer person might do something wholly undesirable.  So, instead you got my rather lame (yet honest) little “thankful” posts.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

While you were tucked into your homes stuffing your bellies with turkey and dressing, Your’s Truly was cruising…

On the open seas…

It all started early this year when Grand Pooba and Coupon Queen, Master and Mistress of the Seas, decided to commence on yet another journey.  Ever since Grand Pooba retired, they’ve been leaving their beloved children and grandchildren behind a couple of times a year while they explored vast lands.

Only this time they decided that they would invite the rest of us along.

So, they booked passage, generously paying for all ten of us (them included), to take a ride on Holland America’s Eurodam.

This is a beautiful cruise ship that routinely travels to the Eastern Caribbean.

Being the good blogger that I am, I took pictures so you wouldn’t feel left out.

This is the first of eight posts (hope you don’t get bored) about the trip.

We pulled the kids out of school on Friday, November 20th.  The school generously obtained a sub for me (sub for the sub…funny, eh?), and I got experience writing lesson plans for someone else to follow.

Anyhoo…we drove down to Ft. Lauderdale…a long drive during which I slept most of the way.

After arriving, we headed out to dinner.  We used to live in Coral Springs, which is a hop, skip, and a jump away from Ft. Lauderdale.  It felt good to be on familiar stomping grounds.

Until…

We stopped at a traffic light, waiting for it to turn green…

And heard the weirdest noise ever.

The noise repeated itself several times before we figured out it was a car horn.  It sounded like a baby crying.

Some impatient-have-to-be-there-now-person-who-shouldn’t-be-behind-the-wheel-of-a-two-thousand-piece-of-metal was irate because we were obeying the law and not running a red light.

To make it worse, they were yelling at us…from two cars behind.

Sheesh.  Give me a break.

You do that where we live now, and you’re liable to get shot.

Anyhoo…

We met up with the rest of the gang…Grand Pooba, Coupon Queen, and my sister and the Mr.’s brother, who are married to one another.

I’ll let you have a second to run that one through your head.

The Mr. and I have siblings who are married to each other.  Hey, we’re from Alabama.  What do you expect?
They have two sons.  Music Man is the same age as Rooster, and Dr. J is ten.

We arose Saturday morning and headed to Port Everglades…

When it was our turn to pass through, we were asked the all important question, “Are you carrying any weapons?”

Um, hmmm…what would be the correct answer here?

Chicky was not impressed with the security, but I guess we looked honest enough that we were allowed through.

On to the terminal, where we answered health questions.

Chicky had been suffering from either a very minor cold or an allergy attack, so she honestly (remember, we tell the truth) answered that yes, she had suffered a runny nose and cough.

While the rest of our crew was given room keys and literature about the ship, my family was told to have a seat and someone would be with us.

Say what?

Ten minutes later, a lady wearing nurses scrubs came out to question Chicky further.

How embarrassing for Chicky…especially when she had to have her temperature taken.

After assuring the nurse that she was fine and simply had allergies, and after obtaining a normal temperature reading (thank goodness as mine would have been sky high after the nervousness), we were cleared to board.

Now, this is where the real fun began.

If you’ve never been on a cruise, let me explain that one of the most fantastic things is the ginormous amount of food available.  And the feasting begins immediately upon boarding.

Trust me.  This was my third cruise, and every one of them have been the same.

You go in, take the elevator up to the deck that has the buffet dining hall, and you eat…

I can’t remember how many lines like this existed, but everything was a little different…Italian, Asian, salads, fruit…you name it, they had it.

And then I saw this…

Dessert!!!!

Now, to my credit, I will say that I never once got any dessert from this display.  Most of the items had milk in them, and because I am lactose-intolerant, I have to steer clear of such yummies.

That’s okay.  I knew I’d get my turn.

There were large windows around the dining room, providing patrons with an incredible view.  Ft. Lauderdale really is gorgeous.  I sometimes miss it, except for the rude people…

After eating, we decided to explore the ship…

Mainstage - Where all of the shows were put on

The staircase outside of the formal dining room

Since we were so close to the dining room, we decided to saunter by.  This would be where we would be eating dinner each night at our assigned table with the same table attendants each night.

The dress code most nights was smart casual...two nights were formal.

The menu for dinner was displayed each day.  I chose not to look because I like surprises.  I did snap a picture without really reading it…

After cleaning up the drool from the floor, we resumed our tour.

This was the private cabana area, which was roped off to mere mortals like myself.  It was on Deck 10 and had stairs (outside the roped area) that I frequently climbed to get to another, more accessible, deck…

Now, don’t act all surprised to see my knitting.  You knew I would pack it.

Bex tagged along in my carry on.  She’s felt lonely because every time I think I have a chance to get serious about finishing her, another project magically jumps on my needles!  Dang that soft heart I have for giving away knitted creations.

Anyhoo…

We decided to head to the top of the ship…to the Internet Cafe/Crow’s Nest.

If you’re a book lover, this is the place for you.  Oh my, but what a relaxing place to sit, read, do a crossword puzzle, or sleep in the lazy chairs that line the ginormous windows.

This is where Super Sis and I took a break from the touring.  I asked if she’d be interested in trying on Bex’s mate, which has been crying the lonely wail that first socks typically cry…

Um, no, I'm not planning on being THAT generous...here, socky socky...come back to Mama where you belong...

The Crow’s Nest, an extension of the Internet Cafe, was blocked off because there was a wedding going on.  We had seen the bride earlier…dressed in her finery.  We later saw her at the lifeboat drill, carefully holding up her dress as she hunted for the place she was assigned to be, should there be an emergency.

We were finally allowed to enter our rooms.  Here’s what we saw…

The couch folded out into a bed, and another bed came down from the ceiling above the large bed.  Every room had its own deck, and we later got the room attendants to remove the partitions between the three rooms.

After a lovely dinner, during which we sailed away from port, I headed to my cabin to start a new knitting project (poor Bex).

Meanwhile, the moon was keeping watch as the ship slowly made its way south…
