A Sensory Experience

We’re spending the weekend in Metairie, Louisiana.  Soccer Chick has an ODP (Olympic Development Program) regional tournament.

I drove her over on Friday after school, stopping to pick up a teammate along the way.  We had a pleasant drive.  I dropped off the girls at the team’s hotel and made my way two exits down to my own hotel, spending the night by myself.  I must admit that although it felt odd at first, I quickly grew to appreciate being totally alone.

Chicky woke me up from a sound sleep by sending me a text message to remind me to take my sneakers to her hotel…long story not worth telling.

Once I was out and about, I figured that I might as well go exploring.  I mean, I had the GPS, so why not!

Metairie is just north of New Orleans…an easy drive…especially when you’re looking for a certain type of store.

Getting my drift???

As I drove, I saw the Super Dome (famous site of Hurricane Katrina victims):

I also saw this lovely church:

The streets in New Orleans are very quaint:

And then I parked the car and made my way down the street to this place:

I consider it my mission to inspect yarn stores across the country and give you a review of them.  Can you tell that I’m trying to justify my latest adventure??

Here’s the view you get when you walk in:

To your right is the “Sale Room.”

Everything in the Sale Room was 50% off.  Here’s another picture of it, so you can see all of the lovelies in the room:

As you continue further in the store, you see, to the right, shelving with lots of books and magazines:

As you pass the shelving, you see the following, along the left side of the store, extending towards the back:

This is just one section of that wall on the left:

And on the right side:

The right side of the store is a sock knitter’s paradise.  This is an entire section dedicated to Koigu sock yarn:

And here’s a section of various other sock yarns.  The right section of this wall is all Tofutsies…the most colors I’ve ever seen in one store:

Here’s a couple of gals I spent time talking to.  The lady in front was learning how to knit in the round.  Her ribbing looked amazing for a first-time knitter!  The gal behind her works at the store and was providing instruction and encouragement to the other gal.  She was quite knowledgeable, friendly, and enabled me in my purchase (you’ll see later in this post).  Her blog is here.

So, with all of that fabulous yarn, whatever was I going to do?  It would have been rude to walk out without getting anything.  Especially after everyone had been helping me pick my jaw off the floor.  I mean, I’m from a small town where such delicious yummies do not exist!

Here’s what I got:

And here are close-ups of the yarn.  I have to say that the Misti Alpaca was a total splurge.  Once I touched it, I knew I had to have it.  I am already feeling it around my neck.  I will cast on for a scarf tomorrow when I get home from LA.

The Koigu was too much to pass up.  All of the Koigu was beautiful!  The colors are vibrant.  I selected a solid color to give me more leeway in pattern selection:

Koigu

And the last purchase is Boomerang.  The colorway is White Zifandel.  I bought it because it’s worsted weight, and I am going to use it when my friend Christina (Rabbitrescuer) and I make socks.  I’m going to walk her through her first sock pattern, and she wants to use worsted weight.  I wanted to make my life easier and not have to adjust the pattern for thinner yarn.  Sure, whatever excuse works, eh?  And besides that, because it’s worsted weight, I’ll be able to get two pairs of socks out of the 320 yard skein.  Ha!  Two for the price of one, eh?

Now, I have to tell you that after I left the store, my head felt like it was in a fog…in a good way.  I have never gotten to visit such a fabulous yarn store.  The assortment of goodies was vast.

I called a friend and shared my giddiness.  She totally understood.

Yarn shopping is a sensory experience, as many of you know.  First, you experience visual satisfaction as your eyes lay sight of vibrant colors.  It’s like a mosaic, with all of the colors combining to form a masterpiece.

Yarn shopping is also about touch.  As you roll the yarn between your fingers, you envision yet-to-be-worked projects.  Will this make a good scarf, you wonder to yourself.  What about a pair of socks?  How will this feel on my feet? Your mind starts working overtime as it tries to process the visions placed before it.  Will a hat be warm if I use this yarn?

Yes, shopping for yarn is an uplifting experience.  It’s as if you are transported to a time of innocence and wonder, much like that of a child’s when something is brand new.  If leaves you filled with joy that’s difficult to explain to a non-yarney.

A Busy Week

Whew! What a busy week!! I am so glad that tomorrow is Friday!

I work at a law firm. Part of our business is real estate, and today we attended an condo auction. I sat, for eight hours, in one room, keeping a watchful eye on the computers. Fortunately, the room had a great view. I was able to watch the approach of a storm…common for this time of year in Florida.

I got nervous when I saw several bolts of lightning, and I quickly unplugged all of the machines so we wouldn’t get zapped.

The storm passed, and the sun came out.

Oh to be rich and have a boat…

After a few hours of severe computer problems, everything straightened out, and the rest of the day progressed smoothly. I finally left for home about 5:30 — a long day since I’m usually home by 2:00.

Despite the crazy week, I have been doing some knitting, although not too much.

On Sunday, I finished my portion of the Forest Greens Baby Blanket. I used Baby Bee Sweet Delight Baby, which I found at Hobby Lobby. The yarn is unbelievably soft. It’s a DK weight. I had a little problem with yarn puke, though. Oh well, it all worked out.

Here’s a close-up of my portion. The stitch is called Farrow Rib. I really like it. It was simple and looks nice on both sides. It’s probably one of my favorite stitches that I’ve used on these blankets.

I made the Summertime Spa Cloth, from the Creative Knitting, July 2008, issue as a gift for the next knitter on the blanket.

I used Sugar ‘n Cream. The color is Potpourri Ombre.

I really like this pattern. It’s pretty easy, although a chart would have been better. As you can tell, my blocking skills need work.

Next, I finished the Black Sheep Booga Bag that I’ve been working on for a friend. I used Noro Kureyon #149. I bought the yarn during my Vegas trip. I think this is one of my favorite colorways…very natural and soothing.

After felting it, I let it dry for a couple of days.

Just when I thought I was almost done, I realized that it wasn’t sitting up properly, so I threw it back in the machine again and let it shrink a little more. The extra effort was worth it. Here’s the finished product. I can’t wait to give it to my friend.

I’ve also managed to start the Froot Loop socks. I’m using Fiesta Baby Boom yarn. If I had to describe this yarn in one word, it would be “squooshy.” The colors are fantastic! It’s a dream to knit with.

Here’s the progress so far.

Oh, and a shout-out to Littlest Chicklet. Look at what he brought me the other day…

He and Mr. AuburnChick went grocery shopping on Sunday. When he passed the flower section, he asked if he get them for me…”For Mama’s graduation.”

::::sigh:::

I really love that boy. How nice to come home after a long couple of days and spy those flowers, which are still alive (yes, I remembered to water them). They are a reminder that no matter how busy I get, I always come home to my family.

A Reward After a Tough Day

Teenagers.

Need I say more?

Yesterday proved to be one of those trying days that so often accompanies the rearing of adolescents. I only have two. I cannot imagine trying to handle more than that. And now they are starting to join forces against me.

Oh sure…go ahead and laugh. You can laugh because you’re either through this stage or you have little ones and have no clue as to what I’m talking about. Just you wait.

You see, I am officially the World’s Meanest Mom. Now, don’t go thinking that you are sporting the tiara. Your’s is an imitation. I own the real thing. I hide it under my thick, curly hair.

Yesterday, Soccer Chick’s mouth got her into trouble, so I took the one thing I knew would matter…the ole cell phone. There are two things I cannot tolerate. Lying and disrespect. Chicky was disrespectful, so I took her prized possession. And she was not too pleased, let me tell you.

Well, the phone stayed with me, and she proceeded to act really weird after we got home. You know how you just KNOW when your child is up to no good? If you’re a parent, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Little clues that reveal their hidden plans, or so they think.

Well, I played along, giving her just enough space to do her thing. I hid the cell phone and walked around the house in a faked stupor. I didn’t have to act too hard cause that’s typically how I wander around…too much information in my brain…mommy brain…you know.

Anyhow, after an appropriate time had expired, I went in search of the phone. It was missing from it’s hiding place. And littlest chicklet was trying to look innocent.

WARNING…you are about to read about a side of AuburnChick that is not very nice. Stop reading if you feel you’ll have to hold this against me.

Back to the story…

I was livid! See, the kids have been trying to make me think I’m going crazy…moving things when I know I put them in a certain spot. Yeah…it’s very disconcerting.

So, when I questioned them about the phone, they acted like they knew nothing.

Was I born yesterday? Hello! I birthed these lying young-uns. I know every nuance of their personalities.

The only way I got them to fess up was to tell them to unpack their bags. They had plans to attend a church camp, and by golly, I wasn’t going to let them run over me. It only took about 30 seconds for the truth to come out. Soccer Chick had enlisted littlest Chicklet’s help to find her phone. And boy is he good. He retrieved the phone from the laundry basket, where he had thrown it when I barged in, catching the two of them in the act.

Let the yelling begin! Boy did I cut loose. Lying on top of being disobedient. I must have looked like a lunatic, but that’s about how I felt.

I am now the proud owner of two additional phones. I don’t know when kiddos will get them back. Whenever I decide, I guess.

And the night only went downhill from there. How far downhill? Far. Trust me. I am not going to share what happened next, but it wasn’t good. Let’s just say that I went to bed around 1:30am. Yeah, not a good night.

Despite all of that, Mr. AuburnChick decided to let the kids go to their camp. I pray that the Lord will zing them with a desire to be obedient. Wishful thinking, but I believe in miracles.

I managed to get myself to work today, traveling an hour to one of my company’s branch offices, where I fought with a computer for several hours. I’m a stubborn gal and do not succumb easily to defeat. In the end, that’s what happened.

Grrr…

In the process of venting to a gal in the office, she mentioned that she thought of me the other day when she passed a yarn store in town.

What’s this? The shop is only two miles from the office! Oh my goodness!

What in the world is the significance of this? Well, you see, to go to a good yarn store, I have to travel about an hour and a half. That’s right. That is why I get so giddy when I go out of town for soccer tournaments and find yarn stores. You’ve seen my other blog entries.

I visit this office at least once a week. I don’t like the drive and being so far from home. But to have a yarn store so close!!! THAT makes the drive worthwhile.

I called the yarn store first…

Ring, Ring

“Hello, this is AuburnChick from Podunk, USA. I’m a yarn snob and am hoping you carry good yarn. Please, pretty please tell me you do.”

“Hello Yarn Snob,” the lady says, “We carry many brands, such as Crystal Palace, Berroco…”

“Say no more! I’ll be there in two hours.”

And that’s just what I did. Boy am I glad that I don’t work full-time. I didn’t have to wait the entire day! And what lovely, lovely yarn there was in that store!!! Wow!

Going to a yarn store is like going to a petting zoo. Lots to touch…sensory overload but wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. After the previous afternoon’s antics and the day’s battle with technology, I needed this time.

Of course, I couldn’t leave without buying something. Darn. Well, not really. Here’s what I got…

The colorway is Tutti Fruitti. The colors are just amazing!  I will turn these into socks…one day…hopefully soon.

This is my first skein of Sockotta. I’ve seen some patterns on Ravelry that I would love to try — which one will it be??

What a wonderful way to ease the tensions.
