Soccering It In Style

Whew!  It’s Monday, and I finally have a moment to catch my breath!

I rang in the new year by participating in a Knit-Along on KnittingHelp.com.  I probably should have gone to bed before midnight because I had a whirlwind of a couple of days afterward.

Chicky and I spent New Year’s evening attending the wedding of two very special people.  Mr. T has been an intern (and has been hired full-time as the middle school youth pastor) at our church.  His fiancee worked at the church last summer, so we got to know her really well.  What a joy to attend their wedding.

We stayed for part of the reception and then headed out-of-town.  Chicky’s team was participating in Disney’s Soccer Showcase…a very important tournament for players who want to play soccer in college.  Many, many college coaches attend this event.

Chicky’s team had won its first two games, so we were eager to join them.  We drove as far as Grand Pooba and Coupon Queen’s house before hunkering down for the night.  After only six hours of sleep, we rose again to head out.

Ugh.  Driving in the dark should be against the law.  There is absolutely no reason to be out on the road at 5:30 in the morning when warm beds await at home.

I did good until about 45 minutes away from Orlando.  Chicky insisted that I stop at one of the Turnpike’s plazas where we got some fresh air (nice and cool for Florida) and picked up a bottle of Coke.  She pointed out the Mt. Dew, but I refrained.  I had made myself a promise not to drink any more, and I also knew how easy I can fall off the wagon.  We justified the Coke because it was only for the caffeine.

The stop helped, and I felt refreshed and able to drive the rest of the way.

We had left so early that we were able to stop at the hotel where the team had been staying.

What a GORGEOUS hotel!!  We stayed at the Hyatt Place.  Oh my gosh!  The lobby was AMAZING, as were the rooms…

Luxurious, eh?

Fortunately, we weren’t able to check in until after her game because if I had seen those beds, I might have jumped into one and not come out in time for the game!!

Chicky and I went to her game, and she played well considering that she was exhausted and had just ridden in the car four and a half hours.  Her team won 5-0, I think, and we headed back to the hotel.

Chicky’s coach took the team to the Ale House for dinner, and the parents stayed behind.  I crawled into one of those fabulous beds and took a three and a half hour nap.  I was absolutely exhausted.  I woke when Chicky got back to the room after dinner.  After a leisurely dinner in the hotel lobby, I meandered back to my room, where I got another ten hours of sleep.

When the alarm went off on Sunday, I was more than rested and felt ready to take on the day.

Chicky and I headed back to the fields.  Her team had made it into the finals, and she was playing against a former teammate.

We won handedly and headed to the awards ceremony.

45 minutes later, we were back on the road, headed for home.

As I drove, I thought about the many times Chicky had played at Disney.  Her first go-round was when she was ten years old.  She was guesting with an older team, and they were playing in the Spring Break tournament.  Chicky didn’t see much playing time because she was so much smaller than the other players, but she had fun and got to experience victory.

The second time Chicky played at Disney was after we had moved to north Florida.  She and two other teammates guested with her former team from down south, and they won!  It was a sweet victory!

She’s played at several of Disney’s Christmas tournaments, but I’ve never gotten to attend…either because Rooster was sick or we needed to save $$ by me staying home.

That’s why it was important for me to attend this one.

Watching Chicky play a game using the talents God has given her brings an incredible  joy to my heart.

Goodbye Willie

On Wednesday, my local community will bid farewell to an amazing gentleman.

His name was Willie, and I knew him because of his job as a soccer referee.

Good referees are hard to come by in our parts, so it was always a relief to see Willie take the field.

Like most refs, he wasn’t perfect, but we all knew he did his best to be fair.

It always amazed me to watch a man of his age (no disrespect meant) run up and down that field in the cold temperatures and frigid rain.

I loved the way he talked to the players on the field.  He maintained a sense of humor even while parents were hollering, “Now c’mon, Willie.  You know that wasn’t offsides.”

The thing that will stand out most in my mind is the respect Willie showed to his country.

Last season, I captured the following photo of him…

I know, I know.  I needed to be standing at attention myself, but I was so moved by the sight of him, that I could not resist the urge to pick up my camera.

I am so glad I did.

Who knew that this spirited man would suddenly get ill?  It seems like only a couple of weeks ago when he worked one of Chicky’s games.

Sigh…

Willie, we’re going to miss you more than you will ever know.  Soccer games will not be the same without you.

A Gift From Francis

First off, I am so sorry I’ve been neglecting the blog the last few weeks.  High school soccer season has been in full swing with the girls playing up to three games a week.  With my long-term subbing job, I haven’t had a whole lot of spare time…

Last night's game...lovely weather conditions, eh?

Thank goodness for shoe dryers (we have two)!

Anyhoo…back to the real topic of this post…gifts!

You’ll recall that a couple of days ago, I blogged about the Shetland Shorty I made for one of my students.

I took the gift to school, eager to see her reaction.  I went to the library, where we had originally planned to meet up, but she wasn’t there!  Oy!  I waited a few minutes before heading to my class.  I thought she had forgotten.

She hadn’t.  She was running late.

About ten minutes into my first class, who showed up at the door?

Francis!!

I had her have a seat while I got my students started on their work.

And then the gifting began.

As she pulled out the gifts I had wrapped in tissue paper, I grew nervous.

She saw the Bible first, and she read the note I had written inside.

I got a hug.

Then she unwrapped the shrug.

Her mouth opened in a surprised “O.”

She recounted the time she had seen me wear mine…the exact memory I had of that encounter.

She seemed touched that I had gone through the trouble to make one for her.  It was no trouble at all, I assured her.

Then it was my turn to open my present.

It was small, wrapped in ribbon, and taped heavily.

Once I broke through, I discovered this…

BLING!!!

You guys know, from reading about my travels, that I do like beaded bling!!  Woo Hoo!  And bling in which all of the pieces have been hand-picked and put together by an 18 year old…oh, but my heart sang!

We both hugged, and she told me she loved me.  Gosh, but my heart just swelled with joy.  I love this girl as well.

I am still so surprised every time I make such connections with kids.  This is my favorite thing about teaching…being touched by other lives and discovering that I’ve touched theirs’ as well.

Reunion

When your child plays competitive soccer, you become a part of a very small, close-knit community.

After being a part of this “family” for a number of years, you begin running into soccer people everywhere!

The best part about this family is watching the kids grow up.  It’s also the hardest part because, as they get older, you have to let them go.

Not only do you say goodbye when the kids leave for college, but you bid adios to the parents as well.  These are the people you’ve shared rides to practices and tournaments with…people who have talked you through confusing, isolated roads to find soccer fields in remote areas.  These are the people you eaten soggy bagels at 6am in dark, quiet hotel lobbies with.  These are people you’ve shared late-night, after-the-game pasta dinners with.  And these are the people you shivered through the cold and rain and sweated through the heat of summer with.

Lots of memories are forged when you share tense moments on the field, the concern of injuries, and the joy of victories with.  Strong bonds result…which distance and time cannot break.

Tonight we were thrilled when Chicky’s best friend’s parents went out of their way to attend her game.  Chicky’s friend, the Marvelous Miss M, started college in August, so we haven’t seen this family since early last summer.

It was a joyous reunion as the Mr. and I caught up with them during the game.  Chicky was in for a treat.

After the game, Chicky met up with Mr. B, both sporting huge smiles.

And then Chicky spied Ms. J standing across the field.

They ran into each other’s arms, overcome with happiness…

You know me.  I’m emotional.  I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes even as I type this.

I get close to people, and my heart is warmed when I witness Chicky express her own love for others who have touched her life.

My Week – In Pictures

Well, I worked four days this week, leaving little time for pictures.  But I did manage to snap a few…

Chickys post-game meal last weekend...that girl was HUNGRY!!

Its cool enough in the mornings for hot chocolate. Like the mug? It came from Starbucks and reminds me of the cables I love to knit.

I bought these bags this week for $1 per bag (I saved 83% on each bag). Wanna trick or treat at my house this year?

Dirty Business

If you’ve ever been a soccer parent, you know that this is a dirty game.

Atlanta has gotten a lot of rain in recent weeks, and it showed when we took the fields.

Observe…

Chicky’s socks…

Her teammate’s were even worse…

Sorry for the poor quality.  I took those with my camera phone.

My shoes took a muddy beating as well, but I managed to keep my socks dirt-free…

The good thing about this weekend is that it was Chicky’s last Premier League weekend.

What does this mean?

Well, the Florida Youth Soccer Association (FYSA) requires teams to participate in league play to qualify for State Cup (state playoffs in the Spring).

For the last five years, Chicky’s teams have participated in Premier League.  This league is comprised of teams from the Southeast, so it involves a LOT of travel in the Fall.  It’s been even more travel-intensive because the teams Chicky has played on during this time have been between two-and-a-half and four-and-a-half hours away.  That means “home base” has been in those cities.

On the way home, I couldn’t help feel a little nostalgic…and a little relieved too.

Fortunately, we had GORGEOUS weather to accompany us.  The sky was clear and the brightest blue you can imagine.

We passed many empty fields, but I spied a few filled with cotton…

Seeing the cotton reminded me of the times the kids played in a tournament that was located right beside a cotton field.  When you live in the country, that’s what you get.  Chicky has even played in revamped horse pastures before (we parked in makeshift, dirt-filled, hay-strewn “parking lots.”  You could hear the horses naying in the barns located across from the “parking lots.”

Um, yeah.

I also saw hay…all rolled up and ready for winter…

This is the last major traveling we’ll do for a while.  High school season has officially begun.  Practices commence this week, and the first game will be played in a couple of weeks.

I’m looking forward to the break in traveling but will miss the scenic views.

Time to Bring Out the Socks

Chicky and I are on the road again.

This weekend, we’re in Atlanta, which cannot go by the nickname “Hotlanta” cause it’s FREEZING!

When we left home (i.e. Florida) at 6:30am, it was 50 degrees.  My phone has a weather application, and I checked it as we traveled.

When we hit Dothan an hour and a half later, it was 47 degrees.  Say what?  Isn’t it supposed to warm up as the day progresses?

We hit Eufaula awhile later, and it was still hovering around 49 degrees.

Lovely.

We got out to eat in Columbus, Georgia, and the wind was blowing.  And it was COLD.  We didn’t dawdle.

We arrived in Atlanta around 1pm, and I’m telling you…it felt colder than an hour before.  Chicky lives for cool weather, but she commented that while yesterday’s weather was nice (the temperature was just starting to fall), today was plain old cold.

Brrr…

Now, let’s talk about the hotel.

It’s the Courtyard Marriot in East Point, GA (Atlanta Airport West), and it’s FABULOUS!  Oh my gosh!  When we walked into our room, here’s what we saw…

The little details, such as plants, lighting, and TV/desk areas change a hotel room from passable to uber-comfy…

A nice bathroom is bonus…

Look at the shower!  I LOVE the little seat area.  It’s great for setting your shampoo bottles on!

Before we headed out to the field, we saw that we had time to relax, so I kicked off my shoes.

Notice anything?

Yep…a hand-knit pair of sock…of course…

These are the Hawaiian Leis Socks I finished in February.  I blogged about the details here.

The little bit of lace makes the socks just a little thicker than your ordinary vanilla pattern socks, adding a warmth that I wanted for today.  The yarn is super-soft.

When people see me knitting socks, they usually say one of two things:

1)  Why are you making socks, when you could buy them cheaper?  Well, because this way they fit ME perfectly, and they are much nicer than regular socks.  Plus, they are different from any you can buy.

2)  Do you really think you’re going to use all the socks you make?  You live in Florida.  Um, we get cold in Florida too.  In fact, Floridians get cold when the temperature drops to 75 degrees.

For tomorrow, I’ll be wearing my Pippi Longstockings socks.

Good thing too.  We have to be at the soccer field at 8am.  Brrr…

I’m ready for Spring.

Travels With Chicky

I know I was bad this weekend…not blogging or anything.

I drove Chicky and a teammate to South Carolina for more soccer games.  You might recall that I made this drive three weeks ago.

Before we left, though, I checked the mail and found this…

Free samples!  With coupons!!

We drove to Jacksonville on Friday after school, allowing the girls to attend all of their classes.  This is important because they take college classes and have a strict attendance policy.

The only bad thing about leaving in the afternoon is night driving, which I despise…

We pulled into Jacksonville around 10pm.

We were blessed in being able to stay with another teammate for the night…saving some $$ in the process.

What a lovely home.  The bed I slept in was heavenly!  I noticed this sign on one of the walls…

My personal favorite on the list?  The third thing from the bottom.

We rose early on Saturday and drove the rest of the way.  What beautiful weather we had too!

I think I’m a fairly patient driver…always considerate of my passengers’ needs (i.e. hunger, potty, etc.).  So, we stopped whenever the urge arose.

Because we travel so much, I have grown to appreciate certain things…non-greasy fast food, clean restrooms…you get my drift.

Boy, did we hit the lottery (minus the money) when we pulled over at a Goasis…located somewhere between Savannah and S.C.

The thing that drew me there was the price of gas, which I could see from the interstate – $2.21/gallon.

The girls went on into the bathroom, and I joined them after filling up.

Here’s what I saw when I entered…

Notice the low-level sink?  It’s perfect for the littlest hand-washers.

Chicky was coming out of the stall, and she said, “Just wait…it gets better.”

And it did…

Doesn’t that look like a bathroom in a hotel room?  Every stall had its own sink with enough counter space to set your purse on.  The walls were floor to ceiling, allowing for even more privacy.

Here’s another view…

It was simply AMAZING!  What a welcome respite from most of the places we typically stop.  There were several food establishments to choose from inside, along with hand-made yummies such as fudge!  I was a good girl and limited myself to the chocolate chip chocolate muffin which, I later discovered, had pudding in the middle.  YUM!

We arrived in Columbia, S.C. with plenty of time to spare, which allowed me to make a visit to Hook n Needle to purchase this…

It’s Noro Kureyon, and yes, the Mr. knew I would be purchasing it.  My plans are to make a booga bag with it…a gift for his grandmother for Christmas.

The girls waited patiently in the car, and then we headed to the hotel for some relaxation time before the game.  Unfortunately, the team lost both its games (one Saturday night and one Sunday morning), but considering that there were no subs available, the girls played well, only losing 2-5 against the two best teams in the league.

Although the games didn’t turn out our way, I have to say that if you’re ever traveling to Columbia, make sure you consider staying at the Hilton Garden Inn at Harbison.  It’s very nice and close to a lot of amenities.  Again, that’s the picky side of me coming out.  We stay in a lot of hotels in a lot of “interesting” areas.  I appreciate primo locations when I am blessed to stay there.

We wearily began our drive home after Sunday’s game…a LONG nine-hour drive.

On the way, I stopped and picked up newspapers from Columbia and Atlanta…

It’s very interesting to compare the coupon supplements from different papers.

We stopped many times on the way home.  Whatever the girls wanted, I tried to deliver.

I had to laugh when I came out of the bathroom and walked to the car during one stop.  Here’s what I saw…

Who knows what search prompted the girls to pull out their bags.  And then to leave them out?  Someone could have easily walked off with them.  But still, it was funny.

We finally pulled into town around 7:30pm, dropped off Soccer Teammate, picked up Rooster from church, and pulled into the driveway…

It was another weekend of traveling.  I know I’m going to miss these days when Chicky is out of college.

Traffic Jams, Soccer, and Knitting

It’s another weekend, and guess what I’m doing?

Sitting in a hotel after a day spent on the soccer fields.

We drove to Jacksonville after school on Friday.  We moved right along until a few miles outside of town, where we hit a major traffic snafu…

Ugh…what a mess!  We checked the GPS and saw that there were actually two areas of congestion…at 9:30 at night!  I like my roads to be in good shape, but this was the second weekend in a row of encountering heavy traffic!

After sitting in a near-motionless state for an hour, we finally managed to creep our way to the next exit, where we mercifully got off.  The GPS decided not to play jokes on me (unlike last weekend) and got us around this traffic via a neat little detour.

My favorite part of the trip is going over the bridge and seeing the lights on the buildings and other bridges…

We were relieved to reach our hotel and crawled wearily into bed.

Of course, now that soccer season has officially begun, sleeping in on weekends has gone by the wayside.  I was up at the crack of dawn to hit Target for some items I had forgotten to pack.

Don’t ask.

Just remember that I am AuburnChick.  There is no Easy Button for me.

Chicky’s team was scheduled to play at 9, and I thought it would be a pleasant morning.  I mean, I had my knitting…

That’s my latest mini-project…a baby hat for charity.  I’ll post more information about it after I finish.

The temperatures quickly climbed, and it didn’t take long until I had to put the yarn away.  Have you ever tried to knit when your hands were sweaty?  Not a pretty thing, let me tell you.

We cheered hard, and Chicky’s team won.

One downer was that one of Chicky’s teammate went down with an injury.  We are concerned that she tore her ACL.  The worst part about this incident is that the same girl tore her other ACL a year and a half ago and was just getting back into prime form.

Please say a prayer for her.

Between games, I ran to KnitWitz, a wonderful store located about ten miles from the hotel we were staying at.

I was crunched for time, so when I ran in, I blabbed quickly, looked around even faster, and grabbed up these delicious skeins of yarn…

The Berroco is identical to the skein I’m using for my current sock project.  I am growing concerned about yardage since the pattern I’m using has mega cabling in it.

I also picked out this…

As soon as I saw the colors, I fell in love with it.  The thing that pushed me over the edge with it was the softness.  Oh my gosh!  I cannot wait for this stuff to be on my feet!!

I made it back to the hotel just in time to take Chicky back to the fields for game #2.  Her team lost.  It was a scorcher, and the girls’ legs were done after the first game.  The opponent was playing its first game and looked much fresher.

At least we didn’t have any injuries this game.

After a delicious dinner at Carrabbas, we’ve settled back into our room.  We’re about to hit the sack and rest up for tomorrow’s game.

Photos From the Road

After nearly 20 hours in the car, Chicky and I are home.

Her team lost its first game and won its second.

The drive home seemed so much longer than the one going up.  But, once again it was a lovely day.

We started early…8am at the fields…

The temperature was much more pleasant than the day before, when we had sweat rolling down our chests under our shirts.  Yuck!

After the game, we hightailed it out of there, carefully making our way across four state lines.  Of course, we encountered road construction in several areas…

I was mindful of the speed limits.  Although embarrassed to be going so slow, I set the cruise control and was rewarded when I didn’t have to hit the brakes when I spotted a police car lying in wait beside the road.

I didn’t let the construction dampen my mood.  Although the drive was sooooo long, and I was soooooo ready to be out of the car after the first hour, I found myself thinking back to my youth as I traveled through each state…

Alabama

Alabama

I have more pictures from Alabama than the other states.  You see, I’m a little partial to this state…especially the part we drove through, having grown up in this neck of the woods…

Lake Eufaula

Lake Eufaula

Eufaula is a pretty town…the kind you picture when you think of the South.  It has a number of historic homes that grace a beautiful tree-lined road…

Driving under these branches reminds me of my childhood, when my sister and I rode in the back of the pickup truck as my mom and step-dad drove along back roads to get to this or that store.

The next picture is the very famous Shorter Mansion.  It is very similar in style to the house I grew up in…

Shorter Mansion - Eufaula, Alabama

Shorter Mansion - Eufaula, Alabama

The next picture is a stretch of road that runs between Eufaula and Dothan.  The green fields induce such a sense of peace within my soul.

Growing up in the country could be frustrating…especially when I wanted to go shopping and had to drive an hour or more for a decent store…but the open spaces gave me a sense of freedom.

I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s almost like you can really breathe when you’re out in the open.  Maybe it’s just being so close to nature…the landscape unmarred by the presence of massive amounts of buildings or subdivisions.  When you drive this stretch of road, you can actually see cows grazing in the fields.  These are scenes that I never tire of…

As I drove this stretch of road, I listened to “soft rock” and remembered the life of a classmate, who I just learned died unexpectedly from a heart attack…at the age of 39.

I remembered how he and one of my best friends (his girlfriend) walked around school with their arms around each other…ALL THE TIME.  Such innocence.  They dated for a long time but must have broken up some time after I graduated (they were a year behind me).

Such a sad story…that one…

Sigh…

Finally, I crossed the border into Florida…

Florida

Florida

We still had a ways to go, but I knew that we were done state-hopping.  For this weekend anyway.

We’ll be repeating this trip in a few short weeks.  It will be interesting to see how the colors change.
