When Students Create the Rules

The first week of school, I tried something new.

After discussing the words “citizen” and “community,” I asked my students to work together to create behaviors that would help them, as citizens of our community of learners, become college and career ready.

Each class had input, and I typed their lists into Wordle.

This is what they came up with…on their own

My students continue to amaze me.  They want to succeed, and deep down inside, they know what it will take.  All they need is to be allowed to sit in the drivers seat with reminders of their goal.

I plan on printing a large copy of their list of behaviors (above) and adding it to a bulletin board in my room as a daily visual point of reference.
