Play It Again, Sam

Ok…lots of videos for you today.  I can’t help it though!

I’m subbing for a history teacher for two days.  Today was the first, and I pretty much knew the routine…movie and a worksheet.  It’s the way she teaches.  So, I figured I’d get in some good knitting time.

Not!

When I went to the workroom, I found the movie Casablanca.

Wow!  I was thrilled!  I’ve never seen it but heard so much about it over the years.

After admonishing the students to pay close attention (essay questions would be following the movie), we sat down and watched.  We haven’t gotten through the entire movie yet, so I’m eager to see how things turn out (I sort-of know but not really).

Here’s one of the scenes I fell in love with today…

Ahhh…the good old days of movies without all of the skin and sex of today!

When I Think of You

Ok…so in my previous post, I talked about the wrong song!  I do like the one I posted before, but it’s not the one I was listening to in the car last night!

Here’s the one that really gets your toes tapping (am I sounding my age now?).  It’s another Michael W. Smith song, from the same CD.  It’s called When I Think of You.

I’m posting two clips.  The first one is the song in its entirety, but I urge you to also watch the second clip.  It’s shorter, but you’ll see him singing on stage with the African Children’s Choir.  It’s a fabulous organization and one I’ve been privileged to see in person.  The children are adorable.

A New Hallelujah

Last night I had a Prayer Shawl Ministry meeting at church.  During the drive, I popped in a new CD that Rooster bought me for my birthday.  It’s Michael W. Smith’s A New Hallelujah, and it’s fabulous!

This song, in particular, lifted my spirit and put me in a great mood to meet with the other ladies and, essentially, have what I imagine to be a “Knit Night.”  We chatted as we worked on our shawls and prayed over one in particular.  This shawl will be delivered in the next few days.

I hope you enjoy the song.

Thinking Ahead for a Change

If you are my mom or mother-in-law, stop reading this…NOW.

Now that I’ve taken care of the first round of business…

I’m quite proud of myself.  I didn’t work today…issues with my lower back have left me extremely uncomfortable.  I’m taking it easy, for the most part, but I’ve had a few things to do the last couple of days.  Today, I was all about prepping for Mother’s Day.

The first thing I did was go hunting for a coupon for my local Christian bookstore.  If you have a Family Christian Store near you, click on this link for a 25% coupon (good on sale items too!).   I printed it and tucked it into my purse.

Now, I’ve gotta tell you that I love the Christian bookstore.  Oh my goodness.  I was there yesterday on a quest for a new family devotional book.  I bought this one:

We have twelve more days of our other book before we get to start this one.  I can’t wait!

Because I was 100% focused on finding a book, I never even gave thought to Mother’s Day.

Until today.

When I entered the store, I began by looking at the cards.  Picking one out for the Mr.’s mom was easy.  She’s always been a big part of our lives..less so as the kids have gotten older but present, none-the-less.

Picking out a card for my mom was an entirely different story.  She and I have never been close.  We had some serious issues in the past that created a chasm almost as wide as the Grand Canyon.  Despite that, I feel it my duty to honor her.  The problem is that the cards I read expressed feelings I do not have for her.

Ugh.

I don’t know if any of you face the same predicament on holidays like this one.

I am not a fake person at all.  What you see is what you get with me.  If I don’t feel it, I won’t pretend it.

Period.

Guess I have sealed my fate as far as winning an Oscar goes, eh?

I finally managed to find a card that more accurately reflected my thoughts.

I also saw a lovely card for my sister.  I don’t normally buy her a card on Mother’s Day, but this one was just perfect.  We’re three years apart and have shared a lot over the years.

With the task of selecting cards all finished, I turned to finding small gifts to send to each mom.  What a job!  I just wanted a little something little, if you know what I mean.

Round and round that little store I went, until my eyes lit on this:

At first I thought, “Oh no, not another mug.”  But as I looked at it, I was really drawn to the colors and the verse on it.  It’s a cup I would love to drink tea or hot chocolate from.

So, I got two and paid for them, along with the cards.

Mission accomplished.

When I got home, I pulled out a few bags of Peppermint Tea.  I’ll put these inside the cups and package everything for mailing tomorrow.

Although it’s not exactly thinking way, far ahead, it was thinking, which is more than I’ve done the last few years.

The best way to spend a Monday???

And when you’re tired of laying on one side, you turn over…

Wonder what Tuesday will be like?!

Let’s Have a Yard Sale!

Saturday loomed early; the alarm clock went off at the bright old hour of 5am, and I was none too pleased.  It’s a good thing I love my children.  Maybe they’ll appreciate it one day.

The reason why my feet hit the floor at such a ridiculous hour was not because I like watching the sun come up.  Oh, it’s a pretty sight, but c’mon people.  When you get up at 5 during the week and a lot of weekends for soccer games, you like to sleep in when you can.

No, the reason was the ever-popular Yard Sale, also known as “Let’s See If Anyone Else Wants to Buy My Junk” Sale.

Thanks to my job situation, the kids have found themselves having to be creative in the quest for money.  They want to attend the summer youth camp the church group attends each June.  Chicky also wants to go on a mission trip.

The youth group had a yard sale a few weeks ago, but Chicky and Rooster missed it because we were out of town attending state soccer playoffs.  Even if they had worked the sale, they would have only received a percentage of the profits.

I suggested that we have our own yard sale, and that the kids could keep 100% of the proceeds of their items that sold.  Guy Friend signed on as well, bringing stuff to the house.  My only requirement was that the kids were to do the hard work…lugging everything out, pricing things with their own colored stickers…assigned by me and designed to keep the proceeds separate.

And work, they did.  Chicky and Rooster spent time in the attic, carefully carrying down rubbermaid containers full of books, Legos, and other miscellaneous items.  Chicky wants to redecorate her bedroom, so she cleared off her desk, and we toted it out as well.  Guy Friend brought two surfboards and a shoebox of PlayStation2 games.  Rooster added his own assortment of items.

So, the day loomed ahead of us.  We all got up early and carried stuff from the garage to the driveway.

By 6:15, everything was ready.  And so I sat.

And I waited.

My first “customer” arrived around 6:30.

As you know, the people tend to arrive in swarms. Business slowly picked up.  Guess everyone wasn’t the early riser that I was.

It’s a bit humbling to watch people drive slowly by, taking a cursory glance at your goods, and then keep going.  Yeah, that’s my biggest pet peeve.  First off, is my stuff not good enough for you?  You wonder what in the world they are looking for.  How do you know if I have what you want?  Do you have such great vision that you can see what’s on my table?  I think not.

Obnoxious.

For the most part, everyone was nice and didn’t expect something for nothing.  I had a bit of fun haggling with a couple of customers.  One of them wanted to buy all of the PS2 games…at once!  He offered me $100.  I countered.  I mean, there were 39 games there!  I wound up getting almost $3 per game.  We did pretty good considering that Rooster had been offered nickels for some of them when he tried to trade them at our local store.

At one point, we put up a tent we take to soccer games.  It was hot!  I had several offers on the tent.  I politely declined, telling people that I still had games to attend.

Now, a couple of tips for those of you considering a multi-person yard sale.

The colored stickers worked great!  I was the only person with the money.  I had a clipboard with the names of each person selling stuff.  A quick look at the sticker let me know who to give the credit to, and I made a note of each item (ex: books) and the money paid.  I kept a running tally, which the kids had fun checking at regular intervals.

At the end of the afternoon, I counted the money and came out exactly even.  The kids got their cash before heading their separate ways.  We wound up making over $300 for the five hours we spent outside.  Not a bad haul.  It was a good lesson for the kids.  Work hard, and the rewards follow.

The kids are almost halfway to their goal of $200 for the camp.

The Backyard Needs Some Love

Yesterday was my day off. Rather than sit around in my robe all day, I decided to be productive. I grabbed the rake and clippers and headed to the back. Before I did, I snapped a few photos.  I figured they might come in handy if and when the Mr. asked the familiar question, “What did you do today?”

By the way, these pictures will probably make you feel better about your own yard.  Keep in mind that at one time, there was grass, and it was green, and it covered the entire yard.  Thanks to my mischievous three dogs, that’s no longer the case…

It’s obvious that I have a LOT of work to do!  The boards you see above were my anti-escape preventative means of keeping Molly from digging under the fence.  Of course, she then figured out how to jump over the fence, so they proved worthless.  I decided to remove them so the water will drain properly when it rains.

I’m in the process of raking the yard.  Did you know that a fertilizer spreader only holds about six handfulls (two handed) of leaves?  Do you know how many trips I made from the back to the curb to remove the three piles I managed to collect?  At least 40.  Needless to say, I’ll be enlisting the help of the kids when I resume my work.

Not only did I rake, but I trimmed the big tree in the second picture from the bottom.  I used a small pair of clippers that I’ve had since I lived in South Florida.  They are at least seven years old and only meant for minor clippings.  I used them to trim some very large branches.

Yeah, I didn’t get much knitting done.  I could barely make a fist after the work. After raking the leaves, I got distracted by dollar weeds.  If you’ve never seen one, here’s what they look like:

They can be quite annoying because they spread like wildfire.  They have long, worm-like roots that connect one “dollar” to another.  I spent about 2 1/2 hours working my way down the side of the house, digging in the dirt to uncover and gently pull out the weeds, roots and all.

As I worked, I couldn’t help but think of my mom.  She spent hours upon hours working in our very large yard.  We had one of the loveliest yards in town.  I watched her transform it from a patchwork of grass and dirt to one of lush green with large flower beds surounding each cluster of trees.  Hopefully my valiant efforts to restore my yard to its once pristine state will pay off.
