On the Road Again

No, I haven’t deserted my friends.

I apologize for the last two days of silence, but my schedule was a bit crazy.  I just could not seem to find time to blog!  Imagine that!

My weekend started on Friday afternoon.  The kids and I got home and threw weekend gear in a couple of suitcases.  We then headed out of town for Round 1 of State Cup playoffs.  I was so excited because it’s the first time that I’ve seen Soccer Chick play travel soccer since rejoining her former team.

While on the road, take a look at what we encountered:

As we passed the car, I got a close-up:

The fire was so intense that we could feel the heat as we slowly drove by.  We’re hoping everyone got out alive.

Soccer Chick’s team played two games on Saturday.  I thought it would be a good weekend to begin to tan the white legs that have mysteriously attached themselves to my body.

Boy was I wrong.

It was cold!  The wind gusts were strong and frequent.  The temperature was well below 70.  Brrr.

To make matters worse, I left all of my warm scarves and hats at home.  All I had were two hoodies.

Thank goodness for those!

Chicky’s team tied the first game, and we were nervous.  The top two teams of each bracket automatically advance to the Round of 16.  They came out and played much better for game #2, which they won.

Sunday was a repeat, weather-wise.  Windy and cold.  The sun played Hide-and-Seek with the clouds.  I still managed to get a little bit of sun on my cheeks.

It reminds me of the weekend when, upon stopping at a gas station after a weekend of soccering, a lady commented, “Daaaammmmnnnnn, you chicks got some suuuuunnnnn.”  Biker chick…redneck.  Too funny!

Anyhoo, Chicky’s team beat today’s opponent soundly…6-0.

A word about parents at soccer games…just because there was a rather annoying one at the game today.

Don’t coach your kid from the sidelines.  And don’t cheer when they knock down other players.  That’s a sure-fire way to tick of one certain Mama, if you know what I mean.  Especially when the player who took a tumble was said Mama’s child.  Grrr…

“You’ve got the wind, you’ve got the wind,” a cetain annoying gentleman kept telling his girls.

To which our girls answered with one goal after another…against the wind.

“Way to make the wind work for you”, I said, under my breath.  Well, maybe not quite under.

So, Chicky’s team is through to the next round.  Thank goodness because the team that comes in #3 was going to have to attend a playoff round the weekend of Chicky’s prom.  You know that’s not a battle I was ready to fight.

Let There Be Light

It’s amazing how new light bulbs can make such a difference in a room!

This morning, one of the fluorescent lights located above my desk went out.  Well, maybe it was already out, and I never noticed.  One of the custodians came by to replace it.  He also switched out the one beside it since it looked like it was beginning to lose its brightness too.

Let me tell you…the difference was (not to be cliche)…like night and day.

All of a sudden, I could see how bright my friend’s coral cardigan really was.  And she could see how dingy my blue jeans had become (it would help if I washed them every so often).

The improved lightening made a huge difference in our dispositions.  We were cheerier and flitted around our section with an extra bounce in our step.

When I walked out to my car to leave for lunch, I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the sky was.  I love how much brighter the days are after the time change.

My heart sang songs of thanksgiving.  Not only was I feeling better physically but emotionally as well.

Such a little thing…two light bulbs.  Such a vast change.

Deep thoughts, eh?

LOL

Another Pair of Socks in the Works

I’m having the hardest time today, and I’m not sure if it’s due to my not feeling well or to this beautiful yarn:

Maui Yarns - Surfer Boy Blue

Maui Yarns - Surfer Boy Blue

It’s 100% Superwash Merino Wool.  One of the gals who knits for the West Coast Oddball group sent it to me a few months ago…as a gift.  You can find it for sale on this site.

It’s lovely, let me tell you.  Hence my dilemma.

What pattern to knit it up into.

I’ve learned, from the ten or eleven pairs of socks I’ve knit, that pairing colors and patterns is essential to showing off all of your hard work.  I’ve often bound off a project and been disappointed when the lace was hidden by a dark shade.

Ravelry has a large database of projects…a black hole I got lost in this afternoon on my quest for THE perfect pattern.

I think I’ve decided to make Duckies.  You know I don’t like to do plain stuff.  These remind me a bit of the pair I just finished, but I like the extra bit of lace involved with the cable-look.  I only hope the dark blue doesn’t hide the pattern.

I guess if I don’t like it after a few repeats, I can always frog.

Ugh…

A dreadful thought…

Oh well…off to do a very small gauge swatch.  Then on to the fun!

A Cool Tool

I was curious about how far I walked today.

True to form, I Googled my question and found this site:  MapMyWalk.com.  I didn’t have to register to use it.

I was able to find my neighborhood, hand-map the route I typically take, and get the mileage (it shows up in the toolbar on the right).

Each walk netted me 2.35 miles.  That’s a total of nearly 5 miles for the day!  Wow!

A Long Walk

It was another interesting day at work.  Not bad, except for a couple of incidents.  One made me mad enough that I knew I needed to blow off steam when I got home.

So I took Molly for a walk.

It was a long walk.

I was gone for 40 minutes.

When I got home, Pele had an eager look on his face.  He wanted to go outside.

So I laced up my sneakers and took him for a walk.

A long walk.

I was gone another 40 minutes.

Along the way, I seriously gave thought to allowing my dogs to poop on someone’s lawn.  A certain someone who lied to me about her daughter’s absence after telling me the truth first.  I stuck to my guns and refused to clear her daughter’s absences (really, haircuts should be scheduled for after school, and “not wanting to come in” is not an adequate excuse for staying at home).  She then asked for my co-worker, whom she proceeded to tell, “So I have to lie.  ‘Miss Can’t Own Up To Responsibility’ was sick yesterday.”

This mom is an elementary school teacher.  Her daughter plays on the JV soccer team (not with Soccer Chick, though, who’s on Varsity).

She also lives three houses down from me.  I passed it four times during the course of my 80 minutes of walking.

Oy!

I was sorely tempted.

I think, in the back of my mind, I was hoping to run into her while I was out.

Bad, I know, but I’m being honest, as usual.

God is so gracious in moments of weakness.  The Holy Spirit reminded me of something.

It was not my place to get revenge, nor was it my place to pass judgment.  She will, in the end, have to answer to God.

Just For Fun

Since we’re on the topic…

Pippi Longstockings!

Here is a picture of my latest finished project:

I’m calling them my Pippi Longstocking Socks because they remind me of the old, old, old show’s main character.  She always wore the craziest socks.

The pattern is actually called Stornoway Socks.  The free pattern can be found here.

My friend, Rabbitrescuer, wanted to learn how to knit socks, so I offered to do a Knit-a-Long with her.  I let her pick out the pattern.  She picked a GREAT one too!

This pattern is written for Magic Loop.  It has a short-row heel.  You probably remember my victory over that battle in this post.

The yarn is Fiesta Baby Boom.  The colorway is Tutti Frutti.  The yarn is fabulous!  It’s soft and moved easily through my hands.  I used 100 grams (3.6 oz.).  The skeins have 2 oz each, so it was roughly 1.75 skeins of yarn.  Thank goodness I had bought two!

One of the main reasons why my friend selected this pattern was because it was written for worsted weight yarn.  This threw me for a loop because the yarn’s gauge is 6 1/2 stitches per inch with size 4 needle.  Let me tell you…my gauge was wayyyyy off for the pattern.  I really hate gauge.

Ugh.  I hate messing with numbers.  My brain struggled mightily with this dilemma.  I finally decided to use larger needles and make the smaller size sock.  Winging it.  Brave, eh?

One of my favorite things about this pattern is the cable that runs up one side of each sock.  Yes, there’s a left and right sock.  So, you have a different cable for each one.

Here’s where I learned a big lesson:  Never think you’re bigger than your britches.  I figured I’m so good that I could do the cable without a cable needle…and so I proceeded to work sock #1.  When I got to sock #2, I paused with the different cable, actually thinking my way through it.  And I made an interesting discovery…my cable on the first sock was backwards.  It was supposed to be running to the outside of the leg.  There was no way I was going to frog it, so I did the reverse cable on the other leg.  It’s not like it was an intricate pattern, and non-knitters would never notice.  Actually, I don’t think most knitters would either.

My pattern modifications (other than the unintended cable switch) were to knit the socks almost to my knees, thus adding five more pattern repeats that involved increases on the back of the leg, and adding 10 rounds of 2×2 ribbing for the cuff.  The pattern is easy to memorize, so it literally flew off my needles.  Had I not had to do the napkin rings for the church retreat, I could easily have had these done in two weeks (factoring in my work schedule, of course).  I had so much yarn that I figured it would be a shame end the socks calf-high.  Oh, and I worked the double rib invisible bind-off, my favorite, from the Fall 2008 Interweave Knits issue.  I’ve mentioned it before.

My only complaint is with the way the colors changed near the top.  I think it’s because of the increases I had to do for the calf (written into the pattern).  Perhaps adding more stitches threw off the color pattern and led to a looser and thus darker appearance?  Who knows.  You can tell, from looking at the heel in one of the photos, how much darker the stripes are there as well.

Whatever.

I love the socks.  I feel young and carefree when I’m wearing them.  They are extra warm, and they are the best fitting pair of socks I have ever made.

Getting Left Behind

You guys know I’m the oober Soccer Mom.  I go to as many games as I can and would clone myself if I could so I could attend everything.

Too bad I can’t make a money tree grow in the backyard.

Lack of money led me to make the sacrifice of staying home while Chicky and the Mr. flew to a tournament in Las Vegas.  Do you remember how I bought myself a marvelous stash last year when I went to this tournament?

Yeah, I know.  It could have been this trip that led to my financial woes.  Well, not completely, but it certainly didn’t help.

Anyhow, on Thursday, I had to get up at the indecent hour of 4:30 to take them to the airport.  It would have been easier if I had been getting on the plane with them.  Rooster and I drowned our sorrows in Starbucks Frappuchinos and donuts.

The worst thing about getting left behind is not getting to watch Chicky play.

She’s amazing.

I think I’ve said this before.

Although teenagers can gab all day long on the phone to friends, talking to parents on the phone is an entirely different game.

Ugh.

Trying to pull details about her trip, the games, and other regular chit-chat was like trying to make Molly obey the “Stay” command.

Nearly impossible.

Add to that unwillingness was Chicky’s teenaged attitude from thousands of miles away.

Grrr…

When I pick her up from the airport tomorrow, I’ll give her a big hug before popping her on the rear.  Shame on her for tormenting me from afar.

Kids really know how to push your buttons.

Oh, and FYI, I’m not getting left behind next weekend.  We’ve got Round 1 of state playoffs.

I’d like to see her try to give me attitude face-to-face.

Stay tuned…

P.S.  Chicky’s team didn’t do too well at the tourney…oh well…such is the way with sports…

Breathing Clean Air

I’ve been a bit lazy lately.  I think I’ve paid the price with my health.

Here’s why:

That, my friends, is my very dirty air filter.  I always write the date I install them on the side.  When I pulled it out, I saw that it had been in my vent since October.

Yuck.

No wonder I’m coughing!

I made a trip to Home Depot to purchase the 20x24x1 filters that are not common enough to be carried any other place.

Here’s the new one I put in (notice how clean it is):

Inhale, exhale.

Yes, that’s much better!

Touching a Life

A friend on Facebook shared this link today.  Please take the time to click on it and read the article.  It’s good.  You know I never steer you wrong.

This story is a reminder of the power we have to touch the lives of others.  We never know how a special smile, kind word, or gentle embrace will impact the recipient.

I know that it is God directing us in these moments.  It’s my prayer that I don’t ignore the Holy Spirit’s prompting in such cases.
